Btw do we have any RedHat Australia people on the Fediverse? I'm staying super close to their Sydney HQ, would love to learn more about opensource in Aus. 🦘🇦🇺

#RedHat #opensource #Australia #Sydney #foss

@Gina Dunno. I know we have @fedora here, but it doesn't look like there's anybody specific to Australia. Maybe they could point you in the right direction?
@Gina Probably not the best place to learn about open source: https://devops.com/rhel-gpl-richixbw/
IBM/Red Hat Sparks Anger at GPL ‘breach’ as RHEL Source Locked Up - DevOps.com

In this week’s #TheLongView: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) goes closed source. Well—not really, but …

Redhat is owned by IBM. Not sure their view on open source is what it used to be nowadays.
@aj if there are any other orgs based in Sydney that I should meet I'd love to hear it. :)
@Gina Perhaps @daedalus or @gdayitsjack might have some ideas for potential Sydney open source connections?
@ancoghlan @Gina @gdayitsjack What's the context of the request? I'm in Melbourne, but Jack is in Sydney often IIRC.

@daedalus @ancoghlan @Gina

I mean "OS connections" is *very* broad...

Lots of various active FOSS communities in Sydney, though RH has been distant from most/all of them for quite some time (read into that as you will). We always welcome an individual curious ear though!

Most communities and gatherings won't be spinning up until the new year. Everything Open is in late Jan (CBR), and UG's/meetups resume in most places from February.

There's also #pyconau (BNE, CFP soon, sponsorships open now!) what might catch your curiosity. But hey I'm biased on the python front.

@gdayitsjack @daedalus @ancoghlan hii sorry for the late reply! Besides being genuinely curious about the Australian foss community, I'm also curious about possible OSS job opportunities now or in the future. It's my third winter in Australia and everytime I come here I love it.
@daedalus Ah, sorry, for some reason I thought you were also Sydney based.

@aj @Gina i've been here since before the ibm acquisition. from my perspective as a person who works on upstream projects (formerly openstack, now kubernetes), the view hasn't changed a bit. to the contrary, i've had ibm colleagues reach out to, and pair with, my teams to learn about our open source culture and ways.

that said, i can't speak to the wider corporate view on open source. i'm sure it has changed, especially with all the ai stuff going on, but i couldn't say how.

That’s cool. Hope it continues and expands.

@elmiko @aj @Gina I can confirm. Many things have changed, some for worse, but not this one.
@elmiko @aj @Gina ex-Red Hatter here. Some of my colleagues were transferred from Red Hat to IBM there were a few frictions when it comes to what opensource projects they can contribute to during their work day - but all of them were resolved as far as I know. So no, the view has not changed neither on Red Hat nor at IBM side

@elmiko @Gina @aj “all the ai stuff going on” has become such a loaded and layered phrase.

I read it as “bullshit distractions” but it’s always more than that, some more bad.

@anticdent @Gina @aj yeah... don't get me started about the distractions.

but honestly, in this case i mean more about the F/OSS issues around our current usage of LLMs. it seems there are still many legal issues around what LLM model tools can scrape and use, and then what they can generate without running afoul of copyright law. also, there are too many instances of original source licenses not being respected by these tools.

all that to say, the view seems more hazy on LLMs.

@Gina perhaps @KathyReid or @linuxaustralia can help.
@Gina @sabre1041 and @fuzzychef tend to get around a lot, they might know some folks down under. good luck! 🍀
@elmiko @Gina @sabre1041 I don't think I know anyone in our Sydney office.
@Gina I once applied for a job at their (now closed) Brisbane office. Much earlier in my career and bombed the interview. 😆
@Gina They used to have an office in Brisbane too… not sure they still do now.
@Gina Hello I'm here (edit: here on mastodon, physically in Melbourne)! However I know mostly Melbourne and Canberra Red Hat folks just from living in those places. @kattekrab is a wonderful Red Hat person who's great at connecting folks (and may be able to think of more Sydneysiders than I am)

@Gina I am based out of Melbourne, several folks have mentioned @kattekrab who knows everyone who is anyone and a few of us that aren't.

Sydney is primarily a sales office, though, so lower concentration of tech folks than other places.

@vk3arr @caitelatte @Gina

Hello! I'm ashamed to have to admit I am not sure which sydney redhatters are here in the fediverse - but there are plenty of #FOSS folk in Sydney!

Many will be looking forward to #EverythingOpen in January and having a look at 2026.everythingopen.au might be fun @linuxaustralia @everythingopen

And some of the #pyconau crew would be here too - perhaps @gdayitsjack could point the way @pyconau

and there should be #drupalsouth people lurking too :) @drupalsouth

:)

@kattekrab @vk3arr @caitelatte @linuxaustralia @everythingopen @gdayitsjack @pyconau @drupalsouth ah that's awesome, thank you for sharing! It's my third winter in Aus and I love it here. Besides being genuinely curious about foss communities here, I'm looking into visa sponsored jobs. I would love to keep doing what I'm doing (work for a gov OSPO, manage national programs to implement OSS, advocacy etc). But I wouldn't mind going back to tech consultancy either, hence my interest in Red Hat. :)

@kattekrab @vk3arr @[email protected] @Gina @linuxaustralia @everythingopen @gdayitsjack @pyconau @drupalsouth

Hello! sorry missed the initial @ mention - firstly I want to say a huge thank you for all the work you do Gina for Fosstodon, really appreciate it - I have a few academic-y accounts on there.

Also not sure of which Sydney RedHatters are around.

I can invite you to the Australian signal chat for Fediverse Admins?

@Gina hi Gina, I’m a Canberra based Red Hatter and also on the Linux Australia council (for at least the next month or so).

Happy to help if I can.

@Gina Kris, @web_goddess would you have any contacts there?
@krisfreedain @Gina ping @warkolm would you know anyone?
@mainec @krisfreedain @Gina I know a few peeps from there but not sure if they are on fedi. @kattekrab might be better connected?
I have one ex-AWS colleague who works there in Sydney. I don’t know them well though, but could do a LinkedIn intro?
