Btw do we have any RedHat Australia people on the Fediverse? I'm staying super close to their Sydney HQ, would love to learn more about opensource in Aus. 🦘🇦🇺

I mean "OS connections" is *very* broad...
Lots of various active FOSS communities in Sydney, though RH has been distant from most/all of them for quite some time (read into that as you will). We always welcome an individual curious ear though!
Most communities and gatherings won't be spinning up until the new year. Everything Open is in late Jan (CBR), and UG's/meetups resume in most places from February.
There's also #pyconau (BNE, CFP soon, sponsorships open now!) what might catch your curiosity. But hey I'm biased on the python front.
@aj @Gina i've been here since before the ibm acquisition. from my perspective as a person who works on upstream projects (formerly openstack, now kubernetes), the view hasn't changed a bit. to the contrary, i've had ibm colleagues reach out to, and pair with, my teams to learn about our open source culture and ways.
that said, i can't speak to the wider corporate view on open source. i'm sure it has changed, especially with all the ai stuff going on, but i couldn't say how.
@anticdent @Gina @aj yeah... don't get me started about the distractions.
but honestly, in this case i mean more about the F/OSS issues around our current usage of LLMs. it seems there are still many legal issues around what LLM model tools can scrape and use, and then what they can generate without running afoul of copyright law. also, there are too many instances of original source licenses not being respected by these tools.
all that to say, the view seems more hazy on LLMs.

@Gina I am based out of Melbourne, several folks have mentioned @kattekrab who knows everyone who is anyone and a few of us that aren't.
Sydney is primarily a sales office, though, so lower concentration of tech folks than other places.
Hello! I'm ashamed to have to admit I am not sure which sydney redhatters are here in the fediverse - but there are plenty of #FOSS folk in Sydney!
Many will be looking forward to #EverythingOpen in January and having a look at 2026.everythingopen.au might be fun @linuxaustralia @everythingopen
And some of the #pyconau crew would be here too - perhaps @gdayitsjack could point the way @pyconau
and there should be #drupalsouth people lurking too :) @drupalsouth
:)

Hello! sorry missed the initial @ mention - firstly I want to say a huge thank you for all the work you do Gina for Fosstodon, really appreciate it - I have a few academic-y accounts on there.
Also not sure of which Sydney RedHatters are around.
I can invite you to the Australian signal chat for Fediverse Admins?
@Gina hi Gina, I’m a Canberra based Red Hatter and also on the Linux Australia council (for at least the next month or so).
Happy to help if I can.
