wiradjuri land (dubbo)

pretty much retired cause I can't find a job. instead I spend a tonne of time volunteering to build communities - RFS, local sport, unhinged internet moderator - while I work restoring some land back to it's proper, natural state

formerly of campaign monitor, elastic(search), RFS

"If you look at domestic and family violence and mental health issues and other social issues, our role of policing has expanded into those societal and social issues. What this report says is that’s very important, but police are not the ones who are trained to do that,” - Queensland Acting police commissioner Shane Chelepy

Which is interestingly what police abolitionists have been saying for ages. Police aren't suited to handling actual problems, and mostly make things worse *looks at other recent news about police in Australia*

Prompted by the kid's need for a new bike for riding to high school and my plan to resume cycle commuting in September I have, for the first time in years, dived back into the frustrating experience of trying to buy cycling equipment in Australia. If anything it's gotten worse. Both manufacturers and retailers treat Australia like the arse end of the world, with a limited selection of products, narrowly focussed on road cycling and mountain biking, and even more limited stock. If you want more transportation/commuting/"urban" style cycling gear your options will be even more limited. The situation is not helped by Australia's insistence on enforcing its own standards, and not accepting similar European certifications. Current annoyance: almost none of the commuter/ebike helmets from European brands can be bought here because the vendors haven't bothered getting them certified to Australian standards, only EU and US ones.

"Earth, our home planet and the only known life-bearing world in the vast expanse of spacetime, is worthy of some passing interest.

This is true because—and I can’t stress this enough—we live on planet Earth. All our bones and guts and snacks are here, so it’s probably wise to get the lay of the land. But as a bonus, Earth is wildly interesting, a restless substrate unlike anything we have seen in our own solar system or beyond it. "
