Last night on stage , I announced my resignation from the Infinite Monkey Cage - here is my statement #science #radio #bbc
@robinince and we hate you were pushed to do this, but love you for doing this. The love and support I've seen for you has been great and I hope you're not getting unseen pushback...
@robinince Very sad for all your fans but well done on maintaining your principles.

@robinince

Hate you had to do this but love it that you did and stood up for your principles.

I love the show but not at the expense of your enforced silence.

if anything, that makes me MORE of a fan now than before.

@robinince I would have thought those opinions were *a good fit* for a freelance BBC Science presenter. "Impartiality" should not mean staying quiet about things that need saying.

I'm sorry to see you leave the Infinite Monkey Cage but understand your reasons.

@robinince You shouldn’t be sorry for letting us down. I’m proud for you for standing up for what you believe in!

@robinince I salute you for standing up for everything that is right and following your conscience.

That your views are unacceptable to the BBC while they fawn desperately on the far right and the bigots in this country is a travesty and a scandal.

Please know that to me you’ve not let anyone down - if anything, quite the opposite.

@robinince super respect for taking the stance. 💪
@robinince An utter disgrace, I shall be writing a letter, even if I have to buy a TV licence stamp to post it.
@robinince solidarity. I’d much rather have your true voice outside the BBC than a neutered one inside.
@robinince sad that it has come to this, but if we don't stand up for our principles we have nothing.

@robinince I've been a listener to Monkey Cage from the start. I've laughed and learned along with you. And am heartbroken at this news too.

You definitely haven't disappointed - you have shown true honour, courage and integrity. A real ally to the communities that need your support. Thank you for taking such a principled stand.

The BBC is a poorer place without you.

@JoJacomb

There's little room for independent thought in most state broadcasters.

To work at the BBC you have to filter opinions, keep stum, or just be dumb.

Chomsky famously pointed this out (5.00).

@robinince We both love this and hate this.

Next chapter, Honey. More nerdology and bants to be had elsewhere. We queers have known the BBC to be not a rotten apple but mouldy barrel for quite some time.

Jump. We'll catch you.

@robinince Thank you. We need more people with principles.
@robinince This is amazing. And sad. Love the Monkey Cage. But well done. And thank you.

@robinince Gutted that it came to this Robin... love the show and it's a genuine loss to see you leave... I hope the BBC rethink their current course, pandering to idiots, racists and bigots is not the way to go.

I look forward to seeing what you end up doing next, I'm sure it'll be splendid.

@robinince This is tragic, and I’m really sad to hear it.

Thank you for doing what’s right, even though it’s hard.

At least I’ll never have to hear another message about how it’s better to listen on BBC Sounds…

@robinince @Floppy I wholeheartedly believe one of the most important thing we can do as humans is keep our integrity - to lose that is to truly sell one's soul.
@robinince sad time but understand and support your decision.
@robinince very sad to hear, Robin, but a laudable and principled stance to take.
@robinince thanks, this is the kind of bravery and decency we need.
@robinince Well done for being yourself. Looking forward to whatever you do next.

@robinince you will never let anyone down sticking to your principles.

Looking forward to hearing you on whatever your next project is.

@robinince this is sad in so many ways 😢
@robinince a shame about Infinite Monkey Cage, but your reasons for leaving are totally understandable. Best of luck for your future endeavours.
@robinince
Chapeau Robin, much love and respect, and Thank You for being you ❤️
@robinince As Alan Moore wrote right at the narrative centre of V for Vendetta in the character of Valerie, that "last inch" is all any of us have really got. Glad to see you've kept hold of it so that it can continue to inspire others.

@robinince

Thank you for standing up for me, for those like me, and for those not like me.

I'll miss you on Monkey Cage, but will find you elsewhere

#BBC has lost a great talent, and for possibly the worst of reasons.

@robinince How far the BBC management has fallen. How tall are those that stand up. Thanks for being able to stand for the brave and the best of humans not their mediocrity and cowardice.
@robinince I am a listener. You have nothing to apologise for. I can only thank you for creating such an amazing outlet of science communication that has brought me so much joy, inspiration and knowledge over the years. And I also want to thank you for being true to your values - which are good and fair! Most people will keep their head down and go on. (They may have good reasons for that.) But I admire you even more for not doing so. Long live the kind strawberry!
@robinince As an American who hadn't seen/heard your previous work, but who has felt like chiding Stephen Fry for being more privileged and less kind than I felt he should be, you have earned my friendship.

@robinince

So sorry to hear this 😔

The BBC has lost some excellent presenters, including Spencer Kelly who was as distraught as you when he knew that Click was being scrapped😔

@robinince

So sorry you were put in this awful position, and so impressed and grateful that you took this stand once faced with it.

Thank you. And sorry. And thank you again.

If we lived in a better world there would be more joining you in solidarity. Perhaps they will come in time? While I wait for them, I think I’ll start making some ‘Long Live The Strawberry’ placards…

🍓✊

@robinince as a trans woman and long term listener I want to say thank you

I will.be dropping it after this series <3

@robinince
I'm sorry to see you go, but I highly respect your decision. Bravo for speaking out and standing up for what you feel is right. 🫡

@robinince

What a terrible choice to have to make but I'm proud of you for making it. May the future be stronger and brighter for you ✊

@robinince I’m just some random bloke on the Internet, but…

I’m so sorry to hear this and absolutely furious too - there’s something increasingly rotten in the management and oversight of the BBC. But you can rightly be proud of your principles and rest secure in the knowledge that you have taken a stand for what is good, right, decent and honest. Thank you.

@robinince The current BBC leadership are a lost cause.

Kudos for standing on principle.

@robinince You have my full respect for such a principled stand.
'Silence always helps the oppressor, never the victim'. It saddens me that the BBC is more than willing to take the role of the oppressors at this time. I'm sure that whatever you do next there will be plenty of people still ready to listen and support you.
@robinince very sorry that this is the state of the world. Good for you standing up for your principles. Thanks for all the great shows.
@robinince
Thank you for all the years of excellent science broadcasting. You have let down no-one. The BBC has failed you.
@robinince from the bottom of my heart, thank you ❤️
@robinince @kathimmel Kudos to you for standing up for your principles- if only more in the BBC were like you.
@robinince @kathimmel Very grumpy letter sent to the BBC- I’m sure they’ll ignore, but I had to say something!
@robinince @kathimmel Update: anodyne reply received from the complaints team- apparently they’ve “shared [my concerns] with senior management at Radio 4.” Now watch as they leap into inaction…
@robinince Really sorry to hear this Robin. I very much doubt that the Monkey Cage will be a place worth revisiting without your contribution and presence (a bit like Curious Cases after Adam Rutherford left). Really supportive of your reasons though. More power to your elbow and I look forward to hearing whatever you go on to do next x

@robinince

Thank you for all you've done, all you're doing, and all you will do 💪

@robinince I love the monkey cage. I think it has little point without you. The dynamic between you and the guests was the heart of the show.
You haven't let anyone down. You've been one of my heroes since the Bad Book Club days. Everything you do just makes you go up in my estimation, especially this. Thanks for your allyship to the queer community. You've put up with so much crap just because it's the right thing to do.
You're still a hero. If you're passing through Milton Keynes and fancy a beer, or a cup of tea, just holler.
There are thousands of us who've got your back. Onwards and upwards!
@robinince You haven’t let us down. Thank you for being an ally and doing the right thing, and for all the Monkey Cage episodes.
@robinince Sad this is how I find out you're on mastodon. Happy to see you being principled in a good way!
@robinince You're definitely not the one that should be saying sorry. It's incredible to have to resign for being a genuinely nice, empathic, inclusive person.
@robinince the world has always needed, and will always need, more people with kindness and integrity. Well done
