the g in gobject stands for glib, and the g in glib stands for gtk, and the g in gtk stands for gimp, however the g in gimp stands for gnu, so really the g in glib stands for gnu, but you shouldn't confuse it with gnulib, which is developed by the gnu project, who shouldn't be confused as the developers of glib, which is the gnome project, in which the g also stands for gnu
@hailey take a shot every time there's a "g"

@whitequark @hailey *visibly alcohol poisoned*

☝🏾 Gggshhhshtoppp

@whitequark @hailey

There are 4 g's in the word strawberry.

@remmy
I cackled. 😄
@whitequark death by gnu gnu
@hailey glib, a C library, should also not be confused with glibc, a C library
@virtulis @hailey These two can't be confused, because the g in glibc stands for GNU. Oh, wait …
@virtulis
The c in clang stands for c, and the g in clang stands for...
@hailey
@virtulis @hailey
glibc is a non-standard standard library while glib is a standard non-standard library

@HugeGameArtGD @virtulis @hailey

Totally Normal FOSS Things

Nothing to see here, move along, move along 😂

@virtulis @hailey glib, a library for C, vs glibc, a C library
@hailey
As I understand it, gnu stands for gnu, not unix, which means the g resolves as "not unix".

@androcat The name “GNU” is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not Unix.”

https://www.gnu.org/home.en.html

@hailey

The GNU Operating System and the Free Software Movement

Since 1983, developing the free Unix style operating system GNU, so that computer users can have the freedom to share and improve the software they use.

@amszmidt

Hence my joke.

In math "x=not-y" means x can be replaced by not-y, which means almost any "g" in a linux acronym ought to be replaceable with a "nu"

@hailey

@androcat What joke? That is not what GNU means, and how we define in English, not Math. *plonk*

@hailey

@amszmidt @androcat @hailey do you understand the concept of jokes?

@can "To my understanding, <absurd untruth>" is not a joke.

Here is a joke, Knock knock, who's there? A troll. *plonk*

@amszmidt So we've established you don't understand what jokes are, but can you explain what you mean by troll?
@barubary We have established you have no fucking clue what a joke is. Now, kindly fuck off.
@amszmidt @barubary You're still replying after two *plonk*s? I guess you don't understand what plonk means...
@amszmidt whoosh: the toot: the movie: the musical

@dngrs *standing applause*?

Loved the quip about "reply guys", say absurdly false things, defend it as a joke, and then toss out insults...

@amszmidt I'm here all week!
@amszmidt in case you didn't like my reply ironically: I was making fun of you

amszmidt

I'd wait until you got it, but I don't think there's any risk of that.

The linux reply guys are really a breed apart.

@hailey

@androcat
This time around it's the GNU replyguys
@hailey
@ozzelot
@androcat @hailey
The g in guys stands for "god no, not again"
@lady_alys
And the uys is a gagging sound
@androcat @hailey
@androcat @hailey I brought a math joke to a computer science open mike and they didn't get it.

@androcat @hailey gnu stands for gnot a gnunix, gnot a gnelf

ITS A GNU, AND YOU'VE BEEN... GNUUU'D

@crazazy @hailey

'Alas poor Yorick! I gnuw him, Horatio'

@hailey solving this problem by making the g stand for "gay" in all of them
@hailey alternatively: same but with "girl's" instead
@srxl i'm a big fan of the girls networked object model environment
@hailey @srxl I completely forgot that N was for network. Ah, the old days of CORBA, Orbit, and IIOP.
@srxl @hailey So GNU = Girl's's not Unix?
@hailey oh and also don't mistake glib which is made by the gnome project for glibc which is made by the gnu project and not even remotely close.
@hailey (also, the gnome developers stole it away from the gimp developers)
@hailey
It's turtles^Wgnus all the way down

@hailey

GNU people have turned acronyms into an art form.

For another example, did you know that “HURD” is a *pair* of mutually recursive acronyms? It's “HIRD of Unix-Replacing Daemons”, and “HIRD” is “HURD of Interfaces Representing Depth”.

Why or how I memorized this, I have absolutely no idea.

@argv_minus_one @hailey Stallman (sorry) comes from a culture of such things, going back at least to the 70s. There once was an editor on the Lisp Machine called EINE (EINE Is Not Emacs); it was succeeded by ZWEI (ZWEI Was EINE Initially), and by then tte joke was already quite hoary.
@argv_minus_one @hailey (EINE was written by Daniel Weinreb, who was one of the coauthors of the CHINE NUAL, erm, LISP MACHINE MANUAL, with David Moon and later joined by Stallman.)
@hailey So gobejct is gnu-imp-tk-lib-object.
@hailey We can go deeper! The G in GIRepository stands for GObject.
@hailey The GNU's not Unix Network Object Model Environment Image Manipulation Program Tool Kit Library Object Introspection Repository

@muvlon
GNUNOMEIMPTKLOIR

Sounds like a soul eating beast
@hailey

@hailey i would simply claim every "g" stands for "good" now
@eevee @hailey the good toolkit, originally made for the good image manipulation program and part of the good network object model environment
