Just heard from a fraud examiner that some asshat using my name and likeness is running around defrauding elderly people. The person who alerted me to this said the fraudsters are actually picking up these poor folks and driving them to credit union branches to withdraw cash. According to Constella Intelligence, the phone number listed here is tied a Facebook account for someone who appears to reside in the Chicago area.

Exactly how stupid do you have to be to use my identity for something like this??

@briankrebs worse than that he's using iCloud for business email?!
@briankrebs Someone's going down!!! Sorry you have to go through that though. All the best in cleanup and recovery. Oh yes, and taking this guy down.
@briankrebs I'm guessing "Is mayonnaise an instrument?" kind of stupid
@briankrebs My spidey senses tell me this won't end well for him.
@briankrebs "I know! I'll use the photo of a journalist whose entire niche is uncovering people like me? What could possibly go wrong?????"

@briankrebs What seems deeply alarming is that someone sees the risks as low enough for physical presence within the typically cameraed-up premises of a bank branch as viable(or has a ready supply of expendable accomplices, which is almost as bad).

Obviously fraud is bad, full stop; but a willingness to do high-touch, in-person, videotaped fraud suggests a much more optimistic evaluation of the risks than just doing attempts at remote and hard to attribute.

@briankrebs seems like they are also claiming they are the credit union EECU.
@briankrebs I once got one of those "stuck in London" emails. The scammer was persistent, so I told him to call me and gave him the phone number for the FBI. He didn't take the hint so I made up a story about a boyfriend coming over for dinner, describing sexcapades for the evening that would make Epstein blush, and added that he and his wife could lose some weight & jumping up and down all night in a futile attempt to stay warm would do both of them a world of good.
Never heard from him again.
@briankrebs
Can't wait to read your after action report 😏
@briankrebs Well, they are senior fraud specialists.
@briankrebs Infuriating as this must be for you, it's actually kinda hilarious this clown thought using the identity of someone who's actual job is exposing cybercriminals, was a good idea. 😆
