Travelling from Netherlands to Italy by train today. How many times will I get Deutsche Bahned? Place your bets!

Jokes aside: I already met a friend on the first train this morning and I’m now on the second in the quiet zone with few people around me and a nice seat, so all’s good 😊

The first Deutsche Bahning has happened.

Train was already delayed by 40 minutes because we had to take a detour due to a collision on our route (in NL). That likely means that some family somewhere is receiving terrible news today, and my heart goes out to them.

However: we're now delayed more b/c stuck in Germany because an upcoming railway crossing is faulty, so I guess this is my official first Deutsche-Bahning today. 🤷‍♀️

Current train has a 45 minute delay. Next one has a 43 minute delay. Will have 4 minutes to change trains. They will be on adjacent tracks. Might work. Still more than 2 hours to go before we get to that transfer, so I guess anything can still happen.

Next train was sufficiently delayed that I could make the connection. However: it was decided that that train would remain in Germany and not continue to Switzerland, so I had to catch another train to Switzerland, which I could not find in the db app, but which at least tells me what time I'll arrive at Basel SBB.

So... Initially, there was a second case of Deutsche Bahning that actually undid some of the NS-ing and the Deutsche Bahning experienced earlier, only to be undone by further Deutsche Bahning.

I don't know how to count anymore.

Anyway. I'm on a full train and the sun is in my eyes and everybody is talking, but at least it's warm and I found a seat.

@anna Made it onto a regional train instead of the intercity train that I had hoped to catch an hour ago. Is Cindy and not too crowded, so I’m reading papers for the next 90 minutes. 🤓
@anna @anna and as soon as I hit “send”, the guy next to me started a loud and angry phone call. 🫠

Made my last train transfer of the day (I hope)!

Made it to the hotel. Everything is embroidered here.

And anything that cannot be embroidered, is covered in some kind of plastic pixel art.

@anna Oooo, very fancy. I'm extremely envious. Hopefully you'll have some fun outside conference rooms.
@ednl you know what’s crazy? I’m not even here for a conference. Ya girl managed to do a travel largely for fun???
@anna oooh childhood memories 💛
@anna
Cool! My great great great grandmother Kunigunde #Schindler spent the last decades of her life there:

@anna a train trip AND a view like that!? So envious. Enjoy!

@anna
Lugano looks great from the water too!

I brought my packraft to a spring conference there this year.

@anna Do you at least have tea or coffee in a thermos or similar?
@funkylab @anna sadly, no. I’ve been meaning to look for a better quality thermos than I have now, so the hot liquid actually stays hot for more than an hour, but they’re all so expensive and I’m wondering if it’s worth it given how much/little I’d use it. I don’t need more stuff, that’s for sure.
@anna yeah, I totally get that.
@anna surfing the trains! This is a fun thread.
@noplasticshower I love that framing! ❤️🌊🚅
@anna Sounds like you're in Germany at the moment. 🧐
@anna there is still time for someone carrying a full kilogram of yoghurt to sit next to you!!
@gnomon someone on this train is eating a lot of raw onion
@gnomon Happy to report that raw onion smell intensity seems to be reducing since leaving Freiburg im Breisgau 🧅
@anna thank goodness, praise be to the deity of alliums

@anna oh heck no, that is far less entertaining than yoghurt.

Je vous souhaite bon courage

@anna Welcome :) And also: if you, by any means, can afford to not let yourself be stressed about the travel itself: it helps *so* much. Hope you have a nice day, nevertheless :)

@funkylab Thanks!

Yes, for now all is good. If everything had gone according to plan, I'd have arrived at the destination station at 18h ish. I will be later now, but that's not the end of the world. A friend will pick me up from there by car, and he's flexible, so I'm not too worried :)
Also: for now I'm still quite comfy, and I have a pile of work to do, so a quiet comfy train is a good mobile office.

@anna True! But, honestly, it'd have been nice if you saw more of the alps with daylight
@funkylab Agreed, but the weather is pretty grey today and I know from experience that night time train ride through a winter landscape with the lights of villages in the valleys can also be nice, so I’m keeping my hopes up 😊
@anna do that! And to that end: I'm in the Northmost quarter of the upper Rhine plain, where I suppose your train to Switzerland might take you, and the longer I wait, the clearer it gets.
@anna Always fun with our friends at  . Good luck today and I hope you are able to enjoy the journey.

@anna Good luck! You’ll get there… eventually.

The good thing about DB is that—at least for me—it makes NS delays feel insignificant for a while.

Enjoy your trip! I’ve enjoyed watching the landscape go by from DB windows.

@mahryekuh Thanks! Yes! I jut passed by a cute cottage in the woods, where the inhabitants had decorated the surrounding trees with giant baubles :)
@anna Happy travels! May the DB gods be merciful!
@anna I first heard this term from Jet Lag: The Game's "Tag: Eur It" seasons. But I'm not sure if they coined it or it was already in use! Sorry you had to deal with this...
