8 billion followers, huh? Seems legit, lol. Who TF is Todd?
@briankrebs guess I should block that domain!
@briankrebs I dunno, but that screenshot is just oozing real shitpost energy

@briankrebs Clearly, I need to follow Todd now as well and make that number 8,000,000,001
@briankrebs who isnโ€™t Todd?

@briankrebs

One time I was in Rome and Todd came with me and he went up to the balcony to talk to the Pope โ€˜cause theyโ€™ve known each other forever and the guy next to me said โ€œhey whoโ€™s that guy on the balcony with Todd?โ€

@briankrebs Todd Mastodon, Johnโ€™s annoying younger brother who is an โ€œinfluencerโ€.
@briankrebs Mastodon alien attack force 8,000,000,000 strong incoming led by Commander Todd... ๐Ÿธ
@briankrebs Tom from MySpace changed his user name?

Whatcha got to say for yourself all mighty todd

@spycrab @briankrebs

I think I should have stuck with just a static website ๐Ÿ˜„

Hope this reply works correctly.

@todd @briankrebs
OH
MY
GOD

TODD IS REAL

@spycrab @todd IS THIS YOUR HOMEWORK, TODD??

@briankrebs @spycrab

More of a passion project.

Had intended to create a super lightweight ActivityPub implementation and incorporate IndieWeb principles, such as POSSE.

Still working out some details, though.

@briankrebs @spycrab

Well yes, technically, I did work on it at home ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

And as a result I should probably reevaluate my life choices for even considering tackling this project ๐Ÿ˜„

@briankrebs I wonder if heโ€™s related to Tom at MySpace.
@briankrebs I'm going out on a limb and saying that probably isn't a accurate mastodon server.
@briankrebs well, it seems to be someone's ActivityPub experiment, an account with real posts and apparent posting answering and questioning several other Fedi accounts.
Maybe the experiment is finding out how many followers are needed to reach the limit, a way to "fake" the number of followers, or to "mass follow" people.
For example, I remember having seen on my TL a boost of "Todd's" post(s?) about not being able to use polls through his/her/their AP experiment (just a few days ago).
[Edit: feeling like I should add myself to the followers eheh]

@jt_rebelo @briankrebs Does ActivityPub protocols allow for instances to report any number of followers they might want without any kind of validation? It sounds like the most obvious situation.

Reminds me of when I made a website to track stats on an anime website and there was a user who watched millions of hours. When I went to check what happened, they just added a single anime and marked it as rewatched millions of times.

@qgustavor @jt_rebelo @briankrebs yes. how would you validate this? you would need statements from both ends of each follow relationship with each statement having a valid signature, and no one wants to do that universally in all cases. everything you see on the web (and in real life!) is merely a *claim* which you can accept or not.
@briankrebs Obviously Todd has found the secret sauce to deliver his messages off-planet.
@briankrebs Hypnotoad is that you?
@briankrebs
Hahaha that's classic todd tbh
@briankrebs ... A bot magnet, kind of like a honey pot
@briankrebs Does it also show you the least followed? I can't find it immediately, but it's equally improbable.
@briankrebs Ah, here we are...
@BenAveling I believe people who have turned off displaying their number of followers are given a -1 follower count.
@briankrebs I do believe you're right.
A quick web search suggests -1 is supposed to display as "-", not as "-1", so that it shows as "-1" is arguably a (minor) bug in the client.
@briankrebs Todd is one of Jeff's friends, obviously.
@notthatdelta @briankrebs 0 is also less than 10. We should be more worried about who's not on the graph.
@econads @briankrebs presumably inclusion on the list indicates possession of at least one warhead... but who actually knows? That's what makes it so exciting!

@briankrebs

I'm sure they're trolling, but it could be a failed attempt at messing with crawlers, actually: https://ultracrepidarian.mysteriar.ch/api/v2/instance

That's my instance. If you look at monthly active users, you'll see some absurdly high number; the correct number is 1 because I'm the only user here.

This is an anti-spam feature GoToSocial has built-in.

@briankrebs

Yikes! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Thanks for pointing that out, Brian.

Correcting shortly.

After getting a screenshot of that website first ๐Ÿ˜

You don't know Todd?! How is that possible?! Everybody knows Todd!

@briankrebs

Maybe he's the new incarnation of MySpace Tom?

Was that his name? Tom? I can't remember.

@briankrebs Todd is John Mastodon's cover name.

@briankrebs

Donald will be so p*ssed that Todd has more followers then he has. ๐Ÿ˜œ

@briankrebs I assume he's a guy with 8 billion bot accounts on his vanity server.
