This is increasingly looking like a possibility.
At WWDC this June, Apple should introduce their visionOS section with:
"We are continuing to invest heavily in spatial computing, and we are inspired by all the creative ways people are using it in our platforms."

Alex Lindsay announced on MacBreak Weekly that he is going to work for Apple's Developer Relations. He will be the Partnership Manager for the 3D ecosystem.
