Question for all those previous child prodigies, honor students, and kids with "lot's of potential" out there. You doing okay?
@catsalad Unemployed and barely making rent. However, I am so talented.

@catsalad I'm assuming that's rhetorical.

And, uh, no.

@catsalad yep, I've got really good at not living up to my potential
@catsalad on the surface, not too bad, all things considered
@noodlejetski @catsalad I feel that image far to much!!
@noodlejetski
I will not stand for this clearly personal attack against me
@catsalad

@catsalad

*looks at this thread*

Glad I'm not alone, at least.

@catsalad Just you wait until I apply myself someday

@catsalad

Collecting diagnoses.

@catsalad it took a long time, but I have resigned myself to never achieving
@catsalad Yeah. Still wondering what they do with kids in the US in gifted programs.
@GreenSkyOverMe @catsalad Escalator with no upper landing. Also no parachutes.
@catsalad no, i grew up without proper support and constantly feel inadequate and like i had my potential taken away from me prematurely
@puppygirlhornypost2 @catsalad for me it's a constant cycle of narcissism into imposter syndrome :c
@catsalad Scholastic advantages of skipping a grade <<< athletic disadvantages of being a year younger than all the other boys
@catsalad well, i guess so. Didn't die last year, and I have a bunch of cats who have very limited brains.

@catsalad Absolutely not, but I’m working on it.

I hope you are, though.

@catsalad
This isn't the future I signed up for.

@catsalad FWIW, I was a special ed kid, thrown out of high school, didn't have the money for college. My guidance counselor just wanted me to get a low wage job and stay out prison.

...I have a lovely home with cat and partner and a thriving community of friends here (France) *and* back in the USA. I'm struggling with career a lot of the time, but I'm a journalist so that's kind of inevitable right now. I also co-run an IT company and develop tools for web forensics with my partner.

@catsalad Oh! one more thing, I was, for obvious reasons in the room when we named out company. I managed to get it named Yoyodyne IT. As in:
@catsalad Well I managed to progress to doing a PhD but about 30 years after it was expected of me. Been too busy being mad as a box of frogs.
@catsalad About as well as could be expected for someone barraged with lies ever since learning human language.
@catsalad I'm okay for now, but avoiding burnout is hard.
@catsalad only thing that’s kept me alive so… arguably?
@catsalad I am sure I would have done more with a 170 IQ if I hadnt been raised by an homeless alcoholic.
I am not ok, but at least I am not homeless anymore.
@catsalad some days are better than others
@catsalad Nope. Not on any level.
@catsalad Do you really want to know? It's better not to ask.
@catsalad ...sort of? Now that I know I'm trans/non-binary and have AuDHD and anxiety things have gotten better. Next step is getting out of tech, hopefully to be a full time streamer 🤞
@catsalad Starting to... just taking a decade more than planed ...and counting. x)
@catsalad What a silly question to ask ... of course we're not ... I mean ... after the crashout? Who would?
@catsalad Pretty sure you just more or less tagged the entire Fediverse.
@catsalad Probably not. My work days are often spent like this…

@catsalad

No. Thanks for asking!

@catsalad
Not as well as they thought I’d be!
@catsalad All of my cohort I’m in touch with are fine, I think due in no small part to largely ignoring our “potential” and doing what we wanted to.
