Once again another "I'm in the wrong field" paper:

@Birdbassador Hazel here has a few things to say about their experimental analysis: β€œstraightward” doesn’t seem to be an option.
@dpnash @Birdbassador this is leftward (=sleeping on the left side) if I understand it correctly.

@zormit @Birdbassador Seems correct based on the actual article definitions, but it still was amusing to compare Madam Hazel to the actual cat photos included as illustrations.

Hazel is also happy to model a right-sided nap.

@Birdbassador
I'm under the impression that my cat uses both positions and sometimes shortly sits up just to curl up on the other side and sleep on.
But of course I didn't measure which side she spends more time on
@Birdbassador I was going to ping @dan but he's the person that boosted this into my feed πŸ’–
@jawnsy @Birdbassador trying to figure out 1) how I can do this kind of research instead of dealing with cursed network hardware, and 2) how many more cats I would need to adopt to have a statistically valid sample

@dan You can never have too many cats, just look at how perfect and lovely your current cats are!!!

Back me up on this, @dev! 🐱😹

@jawnsy @dan @dev 10 acquire(cat)
20 GOTO 10
@Birdbassador, whose direction do leftward and rightward refer to?
@Birdbassador Now I'll have to look up the zillion of photos of my cats and make a statistical review
@Birdbassador Test subject is not cooperating.
@Birdbassador
I skewed that one by slightly tilting downward the bed of my cat to make it change position

@Birdbassador it turns out then that cats, just like the majority of men, are lefties.

#StrangeCorrelations 🧐

@Birdbassador The video abstract!!🀩
@Birdbassador does the direction depend on the hemisphere the cat lives on?
@Birdbassador if you flip their batteries over, they will reverse orientations.
Is our universe trapped inside a black hole? This James Webb Space Telescope discovery might blow your mind

"I think that the simplest explanation of the rotating universe is the universe was born in a rotating black hole."

Space
@Birdbassador their video abstract is so damn cute...
@Birdbassador Mastodon can't always get what it wants. (Exactly, 100%, the most Mastodon thing that Mastodon most wants, i.e. felis domesticus + science & statistics in one dose.) But when it does, it may not be what we actually need πŸ˜…

@Birdbassador

There was once a thing that I saw sometimes called "science diagrams that look like shitposts". This would be a good candidate. But I don't remember where I saw that thing. So I guess I'll just start a hashtag here.

#ScienceDiagramsThatLookLikeShitposts

@Birdbassador Incidentally, this "study" is BS. If you read the details, it's very clearly some students who picked the answer they wanted, and then munged the data to get that answer.
@Birdbassador @lzg I'm disappointed by "domestic" here so I'll offer the sample of one (1) feral cat who is apparently ambidextrous? 🫒

@Birdbassador @lzg Oh FFS.

"To address this question, we included 301 publicly available YouTube videos in our analysis based on our defined criteria, featuring a cat that is visible from head to hind legs with a full-body sleeping position lying on one side, with this sleep side not changing for at least 10 seconds."

THEY WATCHED CAT VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE. I at least sourced primary survey data. 😀
