So apparently there has been some drama surrounding #GZDoom and its original creator using #AI to generate code that wouldn't compile, arguing with the other contributors about how he didn't care about their concerns it might violate the #GPL because they can't guarantee the AI won't regurgitate copyrighted code, etc.

The dissenting contributors have forked the project to #UZDoom.

'GZDoom is basically dead' modders proclaim as contributors split from Doom's most popular sourceport, with tensions boiling over after its creator adds AI-generated code to the project

"The project is now completely bricked and everyone is abandoning ship."

@gerowen

Oh damn, this is awful. I had a lot of respect for #GrafZahl and his #GZDoom project. It was one of my favorite examples of the good #OpenSource can do for #gaming. It's sad to see him fall from grace.

At least the project will live on, albeit under a different name. Most of the commit activity is now happening on the new fork, #UZDoom.

I noticed that Marisa Heit, the original author of #ZDoom, is now participating in UZDoom as a code reviewer. https://github.com/rheit

@argv_minus_one @gerowen I'd say he fell from grace right after the lilith.pk3 thing, so this latest event is just people finally filling in the hole he'd been digging for himself for a while now.

Personally, I think he's had this coming ever since he decided to leave texture filtering on by default.

@DartovHarkness

What is lilith.pk3? I'm not familiar.

@gerowen

@argv_minus_one @gerowen It was a 'glitch horror' mapset that won a prestigious community award for making clever use of engine bugs to enhance its theme while also creating unique environments and combat encounters.

Graf threw a fit over the award because it used the original ZDoom instead of his engine- because he'd already fixed the bugs the mod used to its advantage. He was mad that lilith.pk3 was 'too good' for GZDoom.

The LLM code wasn't a turning point; it was a back-breaking straw.

@DartovHarkness

Why would he object to that? Was someone demanding he unfix the bugs or add bug compatibility code?

@gerowen

@argv_minus_one @gerowen No, he was just mad that an award-winning project wasn't made with his engine.

Without exaggeration, that's the only reason he raised such a fuss at all- to the point of trying to get the Cacowards, a long-running annual event dedicated to spotlighting the best community creations of the year, discredited entirely.

He's always been something of an egotist, and his attitude was inevitably going to eclipse his contributions.
