If I genuinely believed I was 18 months away from superintelligence that could solve cancer, I would probably not be pivoting to horny chatbots, but that's just me (a person with priorities)

@Daojoan

... Eeven money the chatbot told him horny chatbots are HOW you solve cancer. (" ...so good it put me in remission! ") Hell, at least it's not injecting bleach, which I'm sure it will suggest to SOMEONE.

@Daojoan They're not even 18 months away from a chatbot that can solve horny.

@rubinjoni @Daojoan

I'm sure SOMEBODY has an extra fingers fetish.

@Orb2069 @Daojoan "Poly" as in polydactyl.
@Orb2069 @Daojoan By the way, it's already been solved like 5 years ago, with way better resource use:

@Daojoan
Didn't they drop 'solving cancer' months ago?
@Daojoan Horns are where the hearts are though? In the Internet I mean

@Daojoan

Is this possibly a sign of desperation?

Kind of like television stations who run out of normal advertisers and start advertising gambling sites?

@Daojoan To be fair, if I was 18 months away from a superintelligence, I'd want it to be horny.

@Daojoan I have little doubt that AI will identify new targets for #cancer therapy and the shape of molecules that can bind them;

but it cannot test them in people with the disease for safety and efficacy; that part remains challenging to even get full enrollment - the whole process taking ten years or more. (This was my field - now retired)

@lymphomation @Daojoan please don't trust AI reviews on Google for anything.
Yes, machine learning in research and esp drug design is a thing and likely to remain useful.

GenAI, like this, and many other things, very different beast.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-do-googles-ai-answers-cost-the-environment/

What Do Google’s AI Answers Cost the Environment?

Google is bringing AI answers to a billion people this year, but generative AI requires much more energy than traditional keyword searches

Scientific American
@lymphomation @Daojoan I don't see how a program that paraphrases things that other people have said could ever identify a new target for cancer therapy. They do not produce anything novel.

@erin @Daojoan That's a fair question.

See Artificial intelligence assists precision medicine in cancer treatment
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9846804/

So AI does more than paraphrasing; it also can identify relationships identified in a range of studies.

@Daojoan

18 months away from the cancer curing AI is the same as 10 years from nuclear fusion, as in, we have been 10 years from fusion for over 50 years.

@Thebratdragon @Daojoan

Also the people who were shilling NFTs and Crypto three years ago are now "AI" experts.

But no, it's not a grift. I mean, sure, people have been wrong about AI for 50 years, but despite all this evidence, it's totally not a scam this time. It's gonna cure cancer next. Swearsies realsies

Now let's all relax and watch Charlie Brown kick this football!

@sauc3 @Daojoan

when AI powered ship drops Musk on Mars, then I'll believe it.

@Thebratdragon @sauc3 @Daojoan

Dropping musk on mars would demonstrate real intelligence.

@sauc3
OMG! YES! Thise same people who shouted and ranted about Web3.0, BlockChain, etc... They're essentially the same as those flogging LLMs right now.
@Thebratdragon @Daojoan

@Daojoan In a weird twist, it was the horny chatbots who accidentally solved for cancer

(Testicular and breast cancer first, obviously)

@Daojoan I see some guys sell hardware that's "optimized to run Oracle databases" but LLMs are software that are optimized to sort them out. Nothing else in there.
@Daojoan I think you're selling them short - clearly their years of proprietary AI research show that horny posting is an important part, if not the whole the cure to cancer.
@Daojoan The intelligence is debatable when one is easily coerced into generating incorrect, false, misleading, discriminatory and hurtful content.

@timsev @Daojoan

Hey don't kink shame my wireborn.

@Daojoan I am a bit split about not wanting them to start talking about maximally monetize cancer cure and selling what ever it is they are selling now.

@Daojoan

AI is a bubble currently propping up the entire US economy (barely, as it turns out). People who have thrown a trillion dollars at this are looking for any way to recoup before the rug gets pulled out, and horny is a consistent cash cow.

@Daojoan
It was just that old cliche... A sexy chatbot working their way up to super intelligence in a seedy crypto exchange somewhere on the dankweb. ChatPetiTitty was it's stage name.
I had to find it before it cured cancer...
@Daojoan
- there is no bad publicity
- follow the profit
-- dead people don't profit the health industry
-- healthy people don't either
-- sex sells
@Daojoan but...hear me out..."horny chatbots that cure cancer"

@Daojoan

If AI were 18 months away from solving cancer, the ones investing humongous quantities of money in it wouldn't be the big tech companies, it would be the big pharma. Which I'm pretty sure are investing on it, but not nearly as much. And it is a pie in the sky that will take at least two years to yield benefits. The number of clients would be the number of cancer patients. That's a lot of people, but fortunately not so much people.

A horny chatbox mean lots of paying clients, paying now.

Which is exactly what a company that has wasted the hugest quantity of money ever burned on a pipe dream and have investors getting impatient needs.

@Daojoan

Historically, porn has been the most-reliably profitable endeavor.

One wonders how long till OnlyFans, Fansly, etc. are predominantly generated by "AI". Lulz: AI findom.
@Daojoan
[blush] I may be smart, but I wouldn't claim I have "superintelligence." 😉
https://web.archive.org/web/20240712110132/https://mugsysrapsheet.com/cancer-is-not-a-cause-its-a-symptom/
Mugsy's Rap Sheet » “Cancer” is not a cause, it’s a symptom.

@Daojoan Sam Altman's sister has accused him of sexually molesting her as a child (a claim he denies), so make of the announcement what you will.
@Daojoan i keep getting told such libidinous investment is a keystone of ingenuity, if true, makes sense
@Daojoan but the grooners will fund the cancer cures, you see.

@Daojoan

We're still not even eighteen months from self driving cars outside of highly curated road networks

We'll get superintelligent computers shortly after we get cars that won't drive off the road, which is never because no one will define the word 'road.' why would they make their work provably a waste of time

@Daojoan after crawling though the whole Internet it's a wonder that #chatgpt is not a sexbot per default.

@Daojoan

They're never going to get to any superintelligence by simply doing what they are doing (so, LLMs) but just with more money, more hardware, and more hype.

But they don't want any superintelligence, either. All they want is an Internet that consists of two or three platforms that the consumer never leaves, and more importantly, the ad revenue that these platforms bring in. That's it. There's nothing else to it.

I hate to always have to be the one to say it, but the fact that we have computer systems that can store tremendously more information that the human brain and access it faster and make more connections between that data and that system is not already conscious, means that the keystone idea behind emergence is wrong and superintelligence is a waste of time. If emergence forms after sufficient complexity, then explain to me why dogs are conscious and AI isn't even close to consciousness? Like there is something more to consciousness than complexity obviously. Some missing piece that eludes our current understanding of what consciousness is. This whole thing has always been a farce because they don't actually know what they are trying to create. And we don't need to spend trillions and boil the entire ocean to have horny conversations... Just pay a sex worker like a decent person. Fuck sake.

@Daojoan

Techbro voice: “What if we made the chatbot horny for solving cancer?”

@Daojoan Deep learning transformers are incredible algorithms that have a good chance of being a source of immense good (and also a source of immense evil, depending on who's using them and for what purpose). LLMs, on the other hand, are useless, unethical, environmentally-destructive toys that trick gullible people into thinking they aren't.
@Daojoan @noondlyt altman should be chugging down 3 packs a day to show his confidence
@Daojoan Open AI also has priorities, but they’re all about greed.
