Literally me. 11 successful installations of Linux in my area so far, with zero complaints, and I will be doing a 12th soon.

#linux #operatingsystem #foss #opensource

@eugenialoli I've been doing the same thing. Not 11 installs (yet), but I have a few happy customers already! :D

Also, may I just say I love this meme, if I may I would like to steal it and send it to my entire family

@CollateralDamage go for it, it's not mine, i found it on Lemmy and it spoke to me, since I've done so many installations for people here. https://lemmy.ml/post/37522709

@eugenialoli It is wonderful!
I have made it my profile picture on Signal
@eugenialoli Which distro did you install? And how computer-savvy are your users? I'm thinking of trying to convince friends too.
@x0r @eugenialoli i am currently running debian. Linux mint is also nice.
@x0r @eugenialoli ditto here. I started with fedora then switched to mint cinnamon
@x0r ฮ™ do Linux Mint, but a custom version, I change quite a few things and add apps.
@eugenialoli Oh that's nice! I wanted to make a LiveUSB of Linux Mint that would start in French by default and use French keymaps as well. Didn't get to use it though.
@eugenialoli Nice! Making the world of software a better place, one installation at a time. I like it.
@eugenialoli
Which distro ? :)
@clement_la_baleine I do a custom version of Linux Mint, shots on my media page.
@eugenialoli I have inherited of a DELL Inspiron laptop that works fine apart from being on Win 10. I am usually a iOS user. Should I convert to Linux ?
@clarinette @eugenialoli There is also a Dell-friendly Kubuntu distro, which i'm using right now. It handles the Dell firmware updates seamlessly.
https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/
@eugenialoli for a brighter world!
Life without constraints.
@eugenialoli could you share more on this? What do you do?
@frijol ฮ™'m in Greece and I do a custom version of Linux Mint that works great for people that have basic computing needs. I do it for friends and family.
@eugenialoli Seems like the forced Windows 11 migration is an excellent opportunity for people to reevaluate their OS choices.
@eugenialoli I wish I had that many successful conversions (if one choose to call it that). Every person I've installed it for, with a lot of pushback nonetheless, has come to appreciate it.
I think it works because the majority of users, besides the gaming community, use a computer for an office suite, a media player, and a web browser. Things that LibreOffice and VLC execute better than their Windows counterparts.
@eugenialoli

what if i already have linux
@eugenialoli It's easy to have zero complaints when you exit their home office by the window at night in a penguin costume without leaving a phone number
@eugenialoli where do you live? I litterally tried ONE and then failed ๐Ÿ˜‚
@sheislaurence ฮ™'m in Greece and I do a custom version of Linux Mint that works great for people that have basic computing needs.

@eugenialoli sounds great. I forget what i tried to download on my old macbook 2011) but realised afterwards it was known to be buggy. So instead I am left with a dead laptop which really pisses me off. I'll look into it again, hoping any new version can overwrite whatever is on there. That, or I take the train to Greece from London, which I've always wanted to do but it's cheaper to buy a new laptop ๐Ÿฅฒ

#righttorepair

@eugenialoli in my experience they really love a nice ubuntu or other "easy" distro. They'll even reference it out of the blue later! And they love how fast their old machine gets

@eugenialoli

Anyone live in the vacinity of the western burbs of Philly?
I'm probably capable of doing it myself, but no time, up to my ears in helping run my local Indivisible group and collaborating with my peers across SE PA.

I've got a couple of unused old Dell boxes, one ran Windows 2000, an old Gateway running Windows 10 I use as a backup for everything and a 4 yr old ThinkPad laptop also on Win10 I'm going to have to replace if I can't get Linux help, & zero time for that too!

@eugenialoli There is no complaining because they are still trying to exit Vim
@eugenialoli great idea, more linux geeks should offer this kind of service to their non techy friends and family. I'll look for an opportunity to do it myself

@mlabowicz @eugenialoli I have just yesterday nuked my OS drive, got rid of Ubuntu and Windows and replaced it with Arch.

Works like a charm and even better than with Ubuntu, which now seems to be a bloatware...

I don't use that computer much, though... I play just 1 Steam game, some web... For that it is a perfect fit.

There must be many computers with little to no specialized use. They can run Linux alright...

@ssamulczyk @eugenialoli hmmm I have a new laptop coming in tomorrow and am trying to decide which distro to go with ๐Ÿค”

@mlabowicz Installing Arch was fun. Sort of... Gentoo for people that cannot afford energy bill...๐Ÿ˜…

I even had to do some research why it didn't want to boot the installer on UEFI and made a few errors and missteps in the process I had to later correct. Works like a charm now and made me feel the fun of doing it again...๐Ÿ˜…

@eugenialoli

@ssamulczyk @eugenialoli I still find uefi mysterious in Linux installs. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and I can't always tell why

@mlabowicz The solution was actually easy, but not that obvious.

DDing iso to the usb stick did not do the job, because I think it was still MBR and Legacy BIOS.

What I had to do is to format a partition to Fat32 and just copy all the files from ISO to it...

Arch documentations is a bit vague about that...๐Ÿ˜…

@eugenialoli

@eugenialoli So for what reason do you install Linux? ๐Ÿ™‚
@PC_se It gives new life to old hardware, especially since I live in a country where people don't have money to upgrade.
@eugenialoli @PC_se most of people only needs browser and some office app. Setup once - it will run for couple years or more.
@mcSlibinas @eugenialoli Yepp I know. Was just curious about the reasoning behind moving over to Linux. I think it's positive ๐Ÿ™‚
@PC_se @eugenialoli the reason: once you setup - do not need any intervention. It works.
I did it for my sister's pc some years ago. No more calls "pc do notโ€ฆ" as it was with ms win ๐Ÿ˜‰
@mcSlibinas @eugenialoli I'm a IT technician. I would say most time it is the user who is the cause of the errors in Windows. I have not had a OS related issue even once since Windows XP. 3rd party driver issues? Yepp but that's not the fault of Windows ๐Ÿ˜Š
@PC_se @eugenialoli i know you're right. Also i know: since win os gone, my sister have no probs with pc.
And i really do not care why windows has the problems, or not the windows, but my sister has problems using windows ๐Ÿ˜‰
@mcSlibinas @eugenialoli I agree. The importance is that there are no issues anymore ๐Ÿ‘Œ
@eugenialoli Ok. It's nice to see a move over to Linux. I read some post about Mint. It is easy to use? I have only used Ubuntu
@eugenialoli Linux. There's something for everyone....
@dottorblaster @janvlug not at all in Greece. People don't have money to upgrade.
@eugenialoli @janvlug neither in Italy but you wouldnโ€™t guess the level of self-harm people can reach sometimes
@dottorblaster @janvlug linux mint is harm-free. Works perfectly and easily on 95% of computers out there. Which is a high bar, since none of these computers were made for Linux .
@eugenialoli @dottorblaster @janvlug you don't realize it can't be harm free to write something to NTFS partitions from under Linux, it makes the filesystem a huge mess.
@Helgi @dottorblaster @janvlug Then don't, use a fat32 partition to exchange files. NTFS is not a native Linux filesystem, it's an add-on filesystem, and as such, it can never be as well tested as a native one. Plus, it's not like the Linux devs have the specs for NTFS, they just do the best they can. I personally use xfat partitions or LocalSend to exchange files between platforms.
@eugenialoli @dottorblaster @janvlug that's in case anyone goes try booting flash drives with Linux on a Win10 machines, they need to be careful, reading files looks fine. I admit I once deleted the old Win 7 remains that way but I didn't write anything. Maybe the disk check utility fixed all inconveniences.
@eugenialoli Maybe there are no complaints because they didn't know how to use it to file a complaint ๐Ÿ˜†
@eugenialoli I did a zorin os install for a friend. No tech calls so far. I prefer it over Linux Mint as it's geared towards windows users by design.
