I was thinking earlier about how fucked up the concept of “class mobility” is. Like the promise of capitalism is that if you work hard enough you can become one of the exploiters instead of one of the exploited. That’s real crabs in a bucket stuff right there.
@danirabbit yes. Some people think that if they lick the boot long enough, someday they’ll get to wear it. Truly an awful outlook on life.

@danirabbit See also: “grow the middle class”.

I wrote nine years ago about similar messaging from a state-Senate candidate: https://boredzo.org/blog/archives/2016-09-12/normal

@danirabbit Also would not a highly "class mobile" society involve a lot of wealthy people becoming working class? No one ever talks about that part, but it seems to happen about as often (AKA, not very often).
@danirabbit I dunno; I'm pretty sure the promise of capitalism is that if you work hard and smart enough, and produce goods and services for people, then when they exchange money for what you create, you can accrue wealth legitimately.
@ybroze there is no way to ethically “accrue wealth”. Hope that helps
@danirabbit then you try to think about democracy. The same laws for rich and poor, except speed tickets will cost much more for much richer.
@danirabbit ain’t “capitalism “ grand?

@danirabbit

"Crabs in Bucket" cartoon, no one tells them that the bucket is owned by billionaires.

They aren't even allowed to know that billionaires put them in the bucket in the first place.

@danirabbit That is the essence of the American Dream.
Having a shot to rise from being exploited to being an exploiter.
@danirabbit took u long to realise imo
@danirabbit Work hard AND get lucky. Or just get lucky. Working hard alone won't do. (But of course that's what the advertisements suggest.)

@danirabbit I would argue that when you have enough cash to retire, you must do that. Then the rest of your days will be spent in volunteering. That’s my dream.

(What is enough? That’s up for debate. But clearly it does not involve 2nd houses and luxury yachts. )

@danirabbit Well, do you agree that one has to be starting from an immoral place to begin with to believe this is the goal of working to achieve goals? If one wants to better or distinguish oneself, it doesn't mean they have to become assholes about it.
@danirabbit @monkeyborg better vote against taxes on the wealthy cause your turn to be a billionaire is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! It’s not just that the promise is fucked up, but that it’s used against the under educated to make them think they have a chance of obtaining it.
@danirabbit The Great (American*) Myth - If you work hard you'll get on. No, the only certain consequence of working hard is getting tired.

@danirabbit

My belief is that payment for work should be time-based, not skill-based.

Add extra, as your business can afford, for skill expertise you want to attract, but, 1 hour of Jeff's lifetime (and every hour comes out of our lifetime) is equal to 1 hour of Mary's time.

And that hour is the fractional cost of what it takes your family to live comfortably, with some discretionary excess, for savings, or whatever. It's your discretion.

Else, why give up that hour of our life?

@danirabbit No-o. Jus b4 u reach de top, there is this hole you drop into. Den, is all over. Tsk Tsk!
