Tech-savvy people of Mastodon: I have a need to screengrab episodes of Clarkson's Farm

(I'm doing a "person reviews X show on YouTube" & just need to get short clips)

Clarkson's Farm is available only on Amazon Streaming, which does not allow screens (just gives you a black screen when you try)

....does anyone have recommendations

I'm already paying for the show so ethically, there are no problems w taking to the high seas here

I'm just not a great navigator (I put all my Nerd Points into Grow Vegetable & Agricultural Business Models, not Software)

@sarahtaber Just a thought, they show clips from the series on YouTube sometimes. Perhaps grabbing those might be easier
@technikhil it's usually not the parts I'm looking for lol alas
@sarahtaber Strap on your eyepatch and inflatable parrot, then use VLC to play them and capture screen shots. :)
@JustinDerrick @sarahtaber Yes, that's the real answer. And if you already paid for it, don't feel bad in the slightest.
@sarahtaber the first two seasons appear to be on the bay of the buccaneers. (As an aside, Buccaneer Bay would be an awesome name for a historical soap opera...)
@sarahtaber I may have access to video that is not encumbered in this manner, if you have timestamps you want screen grabbed.
@foxxtrot 🫡 Lemme sort through the parts I need & get back to you

@sarahtaber

I'd be shocked if streaming from the Firefox browser in a linux computer didn't let you screengrab it ...

Update: yep. I have just tried in Ubuntu 24.04 with control+alt+shift+R, and I can capture video just fine. I used Chromium instead of Firefox, because I didn't have DRM enabled in Firefox.

@sarahtaber

If you don't want to install Ubuntu, there is a live image that runs from a USB pen, and can access your local hard drive to save the videos. Plug the USB pen, reboot into the live image, screengrab, then exit and return to your regular operating system.

@albertcardona my farmer ass reading that 😭 lmao
@sarahtaber @albertcardona take shots with your phone, and post them for us nerds to supply you with higher quality ones?

@7leaguebootdisk listen if that's how people want to spend their time I'm not gonna tell y'all no

the phone thing might be fine tho

@sarahtaber @7leaguebootdisk

ma'am i say this with as much love as i can for my linux brethren, who are out here fighting the good fight

start with the phone pic

@sarahtaber @albertcardona
Not to be to much of a Linux Guy but, yeah if you have a spare laptop we can absolutely talk you through installation (these days it's mostly just clicking next and setting a password) for, like, whatever... fun?
@sarahtaber @albertcardona ah the old story where a nice farm girl gets linux pilled on fedi, starts wearing very long striped socks, installs loads of cool LEDs in the milking shed, and writes jail brakes for john dere equipment between harvests

@albertcardona fascinating

I do not have a Linux computer nor the expertise to set Linux up on my existing computer without exploding something

if anyone who does Linux wanted to take a few clips & send them my way, that would be most appreciated (I can send timestamps)

otherwise it's probably the Point A Phone At It kludge for me lol

@sarahtaber

If budget allows it or there's one sitting around, linux runs on just about any old laptop, even 10+ years old. Can become handy for things like this. Welcome to freedom from corporate nonsense.

@sarahtaber You're letting the name/concept preintimidate you. Linux crossed the user friendliness line a long time ago. Most of us users have to search for ways to make it difficult now. (Like buying a Linux phone.)
@albertcardona

@sarahtaber I have actually used analog tech when this happens to me with other things. I just use a camera aimed at the screen.

However, I'm sure some folks will have better technical solutions.

@meganL no joke I did this (for a map of North Dakota farmland rental prices) & someone was like "why don't you just [software solution] for this"

sir this is a farm channel

@sarahtaber Haha, and it makes one stand out from a lot of other channels. Make a virtue of those production values!

"Brought to you in stupendous Jank-O-Vision™"

😉

@sarahtaber analog hole them. Aim a phone at the screen and record video or take photos.

@Argonel real talk I just did this (for a map of North Dakota farmland rental prices) & someone was like "why don't you just [software solution] for this"

sir this is a farm channel

anyway that left me w the impression that that is somehow Inappropriate

great way to avoid YT censors though, the software is real unlikely to recognize it as copyrighted footage (it'd be Fair Use but that doesn't always stop YT from demonetizing the video)

@sarahtaber some people have to do things the "correct" or elegant way instead of cheap and easy.
@sarahtaber
If you can't work out the technical work-around ( 😉 ) then you could just photograph the screen.
#screensnap
@sarahtaber "Clarkson's Farm" as in Jeremy Clarkson?
@sarahtaber
That would be the farm that he uses as a tax evasion vehicle then?
I don't know how well known he is in the US but this side of the pond he is known for being a bit of a dickhead.

@brunogirin @sarahtaber I'm in the US, where he is somewhat known for his motor vehicle program, and absolutely think he's a choad.

I'm hoping the screenshots are for reactions that are entertaining in that respect. 😂

@sarahtaber I recommend Stacher7 https://stacher.io/ however it might be a macOS app only. Not sure.

It uses 2 command-line apps and puts a user interface on that, so youtube-dl is the mother code you would want in your native app.

Stacher7. The yt-dlp GUI you've been looking for.

@sarahtaber StreamFab can download shows from most services, and then once it's a local file you can do whatever to it.

@sarahtaber have you tried this recommendation for example?
https://www.theverge.com/23715928/netflix-amazon-prime-screenshot-mac-windows-how-to

This is from 2023 so it may or may not be working solution right now.

Other than taking a look if russian archive service rutracker.org have the series that you need, maybe they are there.

Quick fixes: take a screenshot on your streaming video service

Services such as Netflix, Prime, HBO Max, and Disney Plus have chosen to protect their copyright by placing a black overlay over any screenshot made of one of their videos. Here’s how to get around it.

@sarahtaber screen record (i use android) on your phone should work that's the most straight forewrd way for me to strip audio from video clips

@sarahtaber I'd try a few different browsers; I don't recall which ones are MPAA-suckups and which aren't. This youtube video would imply you can bypass it in chrome by turning off some hardware acceleration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M3LxYLwc3Y

If this is a thing you believe you're gonna do much of I wonder if one of the lower-cost options that targets streamers would work for you. Just something that goes inline to the HDMI connection to the monitor, as I understand it.

@sarahtaber

I came here to warn you that someone was inevitably going to tell you to switch to Linux.

I see I'm too late.

Don't switch to Linux!

...

OK now switch to Linux.

@sarahtaber I'm the same as the analog folks. Pause the video, snap photo with phone 👍🏻

@sarahtaber Try YT-DLP it will run on a windoows computer, and perhaps give your windows computer linux-like power.

Its a command line video downloader program, but is easy enough to use if one can copy the URL of the video you are after.

If it works you would get your own copy of that video on your computer

If you're using Chrome on Windows or a Mac, go into Chrome Settings and disable the "Use Graphics Acceleration When Available" option, then restart Chrome.
