Has anyone here owned a Miele washer-dryer for at least five years and had bad experiences with it? I've heard good things about them and I'm planning on replacing my existing washer-dryer soon. My current one is a Samsung model that has a known design flaw in the condenser that leads to it getting covered in a thick layer of insulation and no longer working (this would be prevented by putting a filter in the right place, or mitigated by making it possible to reach the condenser for cleaning without completely dismantling the machine).

All of the reviews on their web site are from people who had just bought their machine. I'm interested in what they're like after a few years. I've heard from folks who have owned Miele washing machines for 20 years, but no one who has owned one of their combined washer-dryers.

@david_chisnall my parents have had one for ~8 years. Generally happy with it.

@david_chisnall 👏 on that hashtag.

(I've had an LG one for 5 years and it's still working fine but I bought a specific model a repairman suggested "if I still really really want a combined washer-dryer and understand it'll eventually still die just like this one")

@david_chisnall Our local, trusted brick-and-mortar Miele store isn't a fan, his reasoning is that washers and dryers have very different mechanical requirements and unless you're severely constrained by space, just go with separate devices.

That said, I'm quite a big fan of Miele appliances and I'm happy to share my disassembly of their control MCUs and the code to access their diagnostic interface over the optical port.

(Or were you interested in them for actually washing and drying things?)

@felix Actually for washing and drying things, but if it's easy to rip out their controllers (or, at least, the bit that enables their app) and replace them with one of our ICENI CHERIoT devices then that might end up being a longer-term project...
@david_chisnall yeah same, I've had a Miele washing machine for around 11 years and previously had same model for around 18 years so not a washer dryer however the engineers are extremely good and the feeling seems to be of embarrassment that the machine is not working and they want to fix it straight away.. we had a door seal go during COVID..

@david_chisnall I’ve owned their washer/dryer over the last 20 years and they are very reliable and easy to use. They dry well and I haven’t had any faults

However we just bought a dehumidifier and put it in a small utility with a drying rack and that’s an awesome combo at drying

@david_chisnall Miele washing machine and dryer here, both are rock-solid machines over 15 years, well-engineered and w/o any faults.

We did *not* want a combo, so no joy there. Just bolted them to a stack w/ a fitting frame, and Bob's your uncle.

@david_chisnall No washer dryer, but a dishwasher and I'm absolutely not happy with the customer service. We had a problem, it took them 5 attempts to fix it and they tried to gaslight me.
@david_chisnall we’ve had a Miele for nearly 10 years. It replaced a random brand machine that ruined our clothes and developed a smell. The Miele is certainly a better built machine, but combos are inherently compromises between washing and drying. You want a small drum for washing, but a large drum for drying. To compensate, combos dry at higher temps, use more water, and take longer. We found it less reliable, too. Got a dedicated Bosch dryer, and only use the combo for washing now.
@david_chisnall I have been working for the company in the 2010s. Back in the day, quality has been over the top, not questioned at all, everything needed to be solid and tested for at least 20yrs of lifetime.
But things changed. The company clearly suffered over structural issues. Inefficiency was everywhere. And a few years after I left, s**t hit the fan and they „optimized“.
I would not trust in reports of people, who are owning products very long, because this unfortunately is the past.
@david_chisnall Miele has gotten much worse. I bought a very expensive oven from them which started turning on by itself. I spent $2k on an out of warranty repair (the warranty was only 2 years!) and the repair didn’t even work. I basically just have to deal with it. This isn’t the same company it used to be.
