I'm just going to say it, the Fediverse is where all the folks who made the Internet cool in the 1990s are now located.
Mastodon is for old-school neophiles

It’s not for everyone. Not everyone makes it. The few, the proud, the nerdy.

@ColesStreetPothole

lol yup
I keep saying "it's just like IRC used to be but with actual pictures - not ascii art"

@MsMerope
I've definitely felt the IRC vibe here. It was one of the first comparisons I used when I arrived.
@ColesStreetPothole
@xinit @MsMerope @ColesStreetPothole I only signed up to twitter when bitlbee supported it, and I used it as One Huge IRC Channel for a few years until they pulled the plug on those APIs.
@ColesStreetPothole yup! It reminds me of the early interwebs and I like it.

@ColesStreetPothole

Apple 2-c in 84, damn I'm old 😂 and in the middle 90's a BBS

@ColesStreetPothole I'd wager there's a higher-than-average number of people here who used usenet and IRC. (I still do, fairly heavily too.)
@ColesStreetPothole huzzah, I was making the Internet cool when I was six!
@ColesStreetPothole Mastodon: Revenge of FidoNet!

@ColesStreetPothole So much this.

I've said this many times and here I go again.

I fell in love with Fedi because when I come here I feel like I'm surrounded by legions of brilliant, creative, artsy and highly technical weirdos, all in the best possible way!

This place rekindled my heartfelt belief that the internet is beautiful and inspiring and that many of the dark patterns come from people grubbing for money.

Nothing wrong with money. Everybody's gotta eat and have a place to hang their hat. But MAN THERE HAS GOT TO BE MORE TO LIFE!

And this place is a constant reminder to me that there is.

@feoh @ColesStreetPothole

At the library…

“I have some really unusual friends on the net…”
“Those are the BEST friends to have!”
“I agree.”

@ColesStreetPothole and that's why it's the best part of the internet
@ColesStreetPothole Not just the people who made the Internet cool in the 1990s, but also the ones who just thought it was cool.

@tewha @ColesStreetPothole it was a whole new way of thinking about communication and connectivity at a scale history has never seen.

In the long run I think it was a mistake

@ColesStreetPothole

That'd explain why there's so much #retrocomputing content here.

(And yes, computers that were new in the 1990s are retro now. Sorry if that makes you feel old. 😅)

@argv_minus_one @ColesStreetPothole those ugly tower PC with the turbo button are now retro! 😲
@gunstick @argv_minus_one @ColesStreetPothole
NEVER tell someone they have a ugly baby!
@brouhaha My gramma, who was a highly truthful person, always maintained that "all babies are sweet."

@ColesStreetPothole Did you just call me an old fart?

Well... you're not wrong *sigh* XD

@ColesStreetPothole

That's why on average we're well in the middle age, I guess.

@ColesStreetPothole I met back a person here, with whom I had regular contact in a php forum in the early 2000s with whom I did not have any contact in between then and now. So you might have a point.

@ColesStreetPothole
You mean here's the home of old white men?

#Sarcasm

@ColesStreetPothole actually rather in the wider Fediverse, Mastodon is a problematic monoculture that’s even endangering some of the network
@ColesStreetPothole (raises hand) Former Usenet/HTML/IRC addict here!

@ColesStreetPothole

This is true. The guy who wrote the first chat room I ever used is on here. Remarkable.

@ColesStreetPothole I was too young and inexperienced to contribute to the internet of the 90s, but it was still exciting to see as a passive observer, and I'm glad to see some of that aura live on through Mastodon.
@ColesStreetPothole "... all the folks who made the Internet cool in the 1990s, and Jon Roach..."
@ColesStreetPothole not *all* of them... There are still issues here. But I get the vibe.
@ColesStreetPothole Pretty sure those people are on the #Fediverse, not #Mastodon.
@ColesStreetPothole My impostor syndrome has really kicked in now.

@ColesStreetPothole It is a good thing, but it's crying out for better tools.

Twitter's Advanced Search was terrible, but it's better than anything here.

I want a local app that downloads stuff and lets me search locally _and_ online. I want to search everyone I follow, and search only my tools, my replies, and my private mentions. I want categorisation by date, so I can go back to February last year to look for something, like my email. I want a default handler for ActivityPub so I don't keep getting catapaulted onto other instances, unable to comment or like or boost.

The web UI sucks. I had better tools than this for my email in 1995.

@ColesStreetPothole I think of the Fediverse as the spiritual successor to Usenet.

Note: Saying Mastodon when you mean the Fediverse is like saying Mcdonald's when you mean "a restaurant".

@mason This is a fair point. Several other people have already made it, but you were the first to make it in a non-rude manner. 🙂

🤔 Let's see what happens when I edit my initial toot....

@ColesStreetPothole Kinda what Google+ was before it was killed..
@ColesStreetPothole So that's why there are so few of us here
@ColesStreetPothole I wasn't on the internet until very late in the 1990s but thank you for saying I'm cool nonetheless.

@ColesStreetPothole

Minus Don Lancaster, who died, alas.

@ColesStreetPothole So you mean there's only old people here?
@ColesStreetPothole y’all ain’t cool til you DOS cool yo.
