@lucasth @chrishappy this is just one of the articles about it
https://theintercept.com/2025/01/28/proton-mail-andy-yen-trump-republicans/
@[email protected] Corporate capture of Dems is real. In 2022, we campaigned extensively in the US for anti-trust legislation. Two bills were ready, with bipartisan support. Chuck Schumer (who coincidently has two daughters working as big tech lobbyists) refused to bring the bills for a vote. At a 2024 event covering antitrust remedies, out of all the invited senators, just a single one showed up - JD Vance. 1/2
@alyx @lucasth @webhat @chrishappy there is however some nuance to this story (no, not ‘both sides’). I recommend reading this analysis before jumping the gun.
@alyx @lucasth @webhat @chrishappy I think you need to read the article; he was only praising this specific choice to appoint Gail Slater, which was actually a) a good thing for FOSS and b) an extremely ironic choice from Trump.
As the analysis (by a very anti-MAGA reporter) shows, there are no solid pointers that Andy agrees with any of the other things that Trump or his movement does; in fact, there’s a ton of solid evidence of the contrary.
But don’t take my word for truth; just don’t only rely on Reddit trolls.

@amirbkhan @Tutanota you are totally right but it doesn't mean we can't call them out using that handle
they left mastodon cause their social media manager can't handle the pressure
@Tutanota @protonprivacy Besides, it's not the first time you attacked Proton while stating that you are "the world's most secure email". Do I have to remind you that you JUST released manual key verification whereas the issue was raised to you ~8 years ago? It means that until very recently, Tuta servers could easily MITM all the "post-quantum" end-to-end encrypted emails...
https://github.com/tutao/tutanota/issues/768
Proton went beyond manual verifications years ago with a blockchain: https://proton.me/support/key-transparency
@Tutanota @protonprivacy And since we're talking about security and privacy, let's continue...

@Tutanota @protonprivacy To be clear, my goal here isn't to take sides. In fact, I'm a loyal Tuta customer since 2016, for both my work and personal accounts. But as a security practitioner, I just cannot decently recommend your services to people with high security requirements, and I cannot stand your security theater any more. Be more humble and do what it takes to be the best if it's your goal.

@chrishappy @Tutanota Proton.
You can see that on ProtonPrivacy's profile page
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Thank you for providing this link, I was not aware of that deleted post about “corporate Dems.” I believe some claims about Proton’s political sympathies are too far fetched given the evidence, as discussed here: https://medium.com/@ovenplayer/does-proton-really-support-trump-a-deeper-analysis-and-surprising-findings-aed4fee4305e, but this analysis does not mention the “internal miscommunication” case.
Unfortunately #Proton chose to leave Mastodon since they got more pushback here than on other platforms whenever they stepped outside of the image they portrayed. Thus they sadly won't see your apt post.
(I'm still a Proton Visionary customer though, but even as such they didn't want to admit to why they left the Fediverse)
@troed @Tutanota @protonprivacy
Go back and look at the responses they were getting on Mastodon. Why would they stick around when the only people engaging were not doing so in good faith?
It was a pathetic display of brigading and vengeance-seeking from a handful of Mastodon users over some seriously nothing comments on Anti-Trust.
I don't blame them for deciding that other platforms were a better use of their resources.
@troed @DroidPort @protonprivacy
If my company got attacked on social media like Proton did, I'd also leave. They couldn't say anything without being attacked and called the worst names.
Their Instagram account is nice. They've got nice videos, some stupid jokes, and educational content. It's too bad that a lot of people on the Fediverse aren't able to get their content because of the many other people here that enjoy harassing others.
You're not wrong, but you don't always have the option to drop a whole platform as a controversial company. I used to work for Sony Developer Relations. I've seen it all ... :D
I posit Mastodon is also the place that has the very core of Proton supporters. I'm Visionary myself.
@troed @veroandi @protonprivacy
Clearly they do have the option though. Mastodon users also seem to forget how quaint and small the userbase is too.
Never underestimate how important that initial group of "thought leaders" is. That has nothing to do with Mastodon, but all to do with if they move away from Proton and start recommending something else.
(Just to be clear, those persons aren't the same as those who have a need to scream at everyone else for various reasons.)
@troed @veroandi @protonprivacy
I completely agree. Unfortunately the loudest idiots here ruined that for the rest... At least in the short term.
They've left Mastodon in the past and returned. Could happen again.
And Tutanota is talking about bullshit marketing? 😂
Take a look in the mirror first and check what you're posting on social media.
