Hey @protonprivacy it would be nice if you could update your website. Given that both of us fight for #privacy and #opensource, we must not use the same marketing tactics like Big Techs do.
@Tutanota @protonprivacy the CEO champions a fascist, remember? Perhaps you should realize how pointless this post is
@alyx @Tutanota @protonprivacy what do you exactly mean? Please expand
@chrishappy yes please, really interested in that one.
Proton Mail Says It’s “Politically Neutral” While Praising Republican Party

The “privacy-first” company surprised its user base when CEO Andy Yen lauded Trump on social media.

@webhat @chrishappy thanks, will consider to discontinue.
@lucasth @webhat @chrishappy I only recently lifted my limit on infosec.exchange and thus I'm just now seeing this: Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20250115165213/https://mastodon.social/@protonprivacy/113833073219145503
Proton (@[email protected])

@[email protected] Corporate capture of Dems is real. In 2022, we campaigned extensively in the US for anti-trust legislation. Two bills were ready, with bipartisan support. Chuck Schumer (who coincidently has two daughters working as big tech lobbyists) refused to bring the bills for a vote. At a 2024 event covering antitrust remedies, out of all the invited senators, just a single one showed up - JD Vance. 1/2

@alyx @lucasth @webhat @chrishappy there is however some nuance to this story (no, not ‘both sides’). I recommend reading this analysis before jumping the gun.

Does Proton really support Trump? A deeper analysis (and surprising findings)

Recently, allegations surfaced on Reddit that Proton (or at least Proton’s CEO) supports Trump. Hillary Keverenge from Tech-Issues Today…

@Dave_von_S @lucasth @webhat @chrishappy nuance? Bro was openly praising the dictator in chief, that's what started this

@alyx @lucasth @webhat @chrishappy I think you need to read the article; he was only praising this specific choice to appoint Gail Slater, which was actually a) a good thing for FOSS and b) an extremely ironic choice from Trump.

As the analysis (by a very anti-MAGA reporter) shows, there are no solid pointers that Andy agrees with any of the other things that Trump or his movement does; in fact, there’s a ton of solid evidence of the contrary.

But don’t take my word for truth; just don’t only rely on Reddit trolls.

@Dave_von_S I'm not just relying on trolls, I've seen all the tweets and stuff. Do both parties suck? To an extent yes. That doesn't mean go sucking up to the party of fascists and especially don't double down on the official proton account. Even if he's not generally MAGA I still can't trust anyone like thst
@alyx well, in this specific case I believe he was more being ironic than deliberately sucking up. Was it wise for him to post it in the first place like this? Probably not as it’s not crystal clear how he meant it. Was it taken out of proportion? Probably. Did he make a mess of it afterwards? Definitely. Do I judge him on this one unlucky tweet about one of the very few sane things Trump did? Nope
@Dave_von_S I guess my threat model is different. I deal with stalking and harassment outside of Fedi, including mass reporting. @Tutanota refused to accept such garbage reports, whereas Proton after their latest fumble with the journalists (even if accidental) cannot be trusted to do the same resistance
@alyx @Tutanota fair enough, my threat model indeed has more wiggle room for good actors making incidental mistakes
