GitHub CEO: Embrace AI or get out.

GitHub CEO delivers stark message to developers: Embrace AI or get out.

Thomas Dohmke wrote that humans are often resistant to change. He said that's okay, but these people should probably find another profession.

Business Insider
@aral curious how people that no longer learn to code are supposed to "manage and verify AI outputs"
@elexia Ah, see, the problem is you’re applying logic to greed… :)
@aral @Codeberg if they have to resort to menace and shovel it into everyone's throat... this says a lot about the state of this technology and how much developers actually want to use it.
@aral @Codeberg developers have been early adopters of every technology that made their life easier. Why would they resist if it was that good?
@aral @Codeberg remember autonomous vehicules ? I compiled a list of 10 articles from 2012 to 2022 saying their would be no more human driving in 5 years...
@aral @Codeberg is good but this reminds me of a fellow gay guy I knew who turned everything into a gay rights issue. Speaking of gay rights: How are LGBTQ rights in Palestine? Are there Pride marches yet? I hope so.

@aral
It took me 5 seconds to find tools to migrate your repos (not posting, as I don't have the space to test them).

I was however looking for something to make a more formal–ish fork of a repo on GH to CB, except just uploading the code and making a note “forked from: ” (maybe that's enough, I'm not forking often).

@Codeberg

@aral @Codeberg I love that it’s 22 random developers (or devs that are on his payroll and would say anything that their boss wants them to say?), so the source is basically: Trust me, tech bro.

It’s all so bizarre.

@aral @Codeberg Haha. Yeah, I started to move to sourcehut and it is great. Sure, not as flashy but it works really well and the devs are no evil fuckfaces as the microsoft people are.

@pythno @aral @Codeberg

I was going to promote SourceHut too. I have a paid account there (though I believe a lot of the features can be used without paying).

But Codeberg is great too, I'm not knocking it.

@pythno
Unfortunately Sourcehut still doesn't seem to want federation (at least as far as I know) while Codeberg is actively working towards getting ActivityPub support into forgejo.
Developers, Reinvented – Thomas Dohmke

What started as fear of AI replacing developers is switching to pragmatically embracing the ambitious reality of AI and viewing it as a growth opportunity. As we build the tools of tomorrow, we can usher developers through this reinvention of their role in ways that are intuitive, delightful, and cater to developers’ curiosity, keeping them fulfilled and happy during the transition. That makes us optimistic. Realistically.

@pythno @aral ah, of COURSE it has a Ghibli-style slop preview image.

@aral @Codeberg If you’re against them stealing from you, you’re against ”progress”.

Sound like progress in a direction I don’t want to progress into!

@Aral Balkan Even the Business Insider journalist seems to understand how bizarre this is:

This is the latest example of a strange marketing strategy by AI companies. Instead of selling products based on helpful features and letting users decide, executives often deploy scare tactics that essentially warn people they will become obsolete if they don't get on the AI bandwagon.

When the owner class needs to scare you into adopting their "tools", you know it's a scam.

I suggest Thomas Dohmke finds himself another profession. He's clearly unfit to understand how to manage developers.

@aral @Codeberg he is a bloody idiot. He doesn’t even know what #AI is! He means #LLM. LLM generates buggy code and often doesn’t even compile. Often it is not portable. It is non deterministic. That alone should say everything. The AI craze is the tech Frankenstein and it’s a giant scam. I wouldn’t worry about what someone who clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about let alone his arse from his elbow is talking about. AI my arse.
@aral @Codeberg and someone should start a list of all the broken code LLM has generated and link back to his post. Maybe I should. Just a matter of finding the time. He doesn’t have a bloody clue. It’s just noise from a person who clearly doesn’t know much about programming if he knows anything about it at all.
@xexyl @Codeberg To quote Upton Sinclair (likely badly from memory), it’s difficult to get a man to understand something if his salary depends on his not understanding it.
@aral @Codeberg That's a classic - and so very very true! I think also that CEOs (I think I saw that) really are not only clueless but totally out of touch. Even OpenAI - the name - is a misnomer at best. They can talk about it being #AI all they want but the fact ChatGPT doesn't learn (memories don't count) and will give different answers over and over again says it all. We should be thankful. But perhaps not: google's so-called 'AI' Overview has said some extremely dangerous and deadly things!
@aral @Codeberg I have seen it suggest that you can use petrol as a spice. It has suggested eating arse is healthy. Eating stones is healthy (from a satirical article). Actually stones and petrol can and likely will kill you (some #Holocaust victims actually tried it out of starvation, eating stones, and died). Worse one: telling if you're depressed you could jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. But I have seen other awful things and it also generates broken code even worse than #ChatGPT

@aral @Codeberg Codeberg Rocks! Using it all the time. 💛
@aral @Codeberg How surprising that the CEO of a Microsoft company would have such a know-it-all, exclusionary attitude! Oh, did I say "surprising", I meant "typical"

@aral @Codeberg
Can anyone recommend similar services for private repos? I have a half-dozen private projects I want to keep in the cloud, and I want my resume hosted on a static site.

Ideally something that runs forgejo, since we're using that for work, and hosted outside the US because <waves arms>.

Sourcehut looks neat, but not sure it's mature yet.

@ThreeSigma
The linked Codeberg.org can do that (they offer both private repos and a static page system similar to GitHub), although if you want to only have private repos then your own install might be fairer as Codeberg is kinda focused on open source.
@aral @Codeberg me thinks the tech bro doth protest too much! If his product is so great then why does he need to force his customers to use it? This isn't an industrial revolution; it's a cargo cult.

@aral what a depressing read, that « blog post ». These people have no vision and believe in nothing, so they are bound to prey on the living.
@Codeberg
@geist @Codeberg It’s what vampires do.
@aral @geist @Codeberg Vampires are at least attractive and cultured (depending on the version)... So I'm not sure if that's a fair comparison.

Update 8/8/2025 – I wrote this the day before a certain post by a popular developer services company. I’ve seen some comments this is a rebuttal – it wasn’t meant to be! But…
