Another day, another conversation with the press team where I explain that I did not give the quote in that story and the whole thing is AI slop. This happens once every few weeks now.
@evacide And it's only getting worse. And worse, and worse.
@evacide hooray for AI! Productivity x1000!!!1!

@evacide Try one to three articles a day. That was my life for nine months in 2024. Today, this is what Google AI snippets (or whatever itʼs called) quotes from despite my successfully removing the majority of disinformation about me.

Read all about the SEO algorithm that I developed for Google

P.P.PS., May 31, 2024: Since this post keeps getting linked by people posting disinformation, and seemingly by those using LLMs and are illiterate themselves, let me make things very clear to those who can read: there is no such thing as a Jackyan algorithm. The whole point of the title was to take the mickey

Jack Yan: the Persuader Blog

@evacide

Jeez. Every week I learn about a new and unexpected way how generative AI is bad.

Im curious though about what was the quote.

@evacide I got quoted as an expert in a legal case! Like they had my name right, Dr MissConstrue, but instead of a bioethicist, they had me listed as a forensic anthropologist. I haven’t never anthropologied, forensic or otherwise. I once unearthed a mummy or something in a National Geographic kit, and that’s as close as I’ve gotten. I have a biological sister from a father I never really knew, who I think does that for a university, but I have literally not spoken to her in 40 years, so I dunno.
Anyway, a reporter called me to ask why I hadn’t testified if I was an expert witness, and I said, erm, wut? And I sent a letter to the clerk that said, oh, but no. Not me. Wasn’t there, wasn’t deposed, don’t know anything about the topic, have been out of academia for decades and am not even an expert in my own field anymore.
It’s my understanding that the attorneys used an LLM.. And are being disbarred.

@MissConstrue
@evacide

> Getting disbarred

Well, good

But everything else about this story is horrifying

@MissConstrue @evacide

"And are being disbarred."

Yaaaay!

@MissConstrue

I hope they anthropologised to you.

@evacide

@MissConstrue @evacide This is horrific, and worries me a lot. What if a reporter hadn't got in touch? You'd never know you had been falsely cited.
@MissConstrue @evacide not to attempt to dox you, but do you have any personal detail overlap with the main character from the book/show Bones, Dr. Temperance Brennan? I wonder if that's where the LLM got "forensic anthropologist"…
@MissConstrue @evacide sounds like you got... misconstrued
@evacide You have my sympathies
@evacide This is absolutely unacceptable. Any "journalist" who does this should be fired.
@sjvn There is no journalist. The name on the byline is usually completely made up.

@evacide @sjvn

The publisher should be fired

@evacide being part of the grey mass, don't have that issue at all, thrilled if I manage to get a "star" from some super famous person like @sjvn
@evacide curious about when and where this happened, if you don’t mind sharing.
@evacide Neat! This bodes super-well for many things!
