My Android phone just performed a forced, unauthorized OS update, removing root access in the process.

Despite automatic updates being explicitly disabled.

The tech industry's understanding of "consent" is contemptuous.

"No" means "no", not "maybe later", or "unless you think you know better".

@ryanc

Why don't you install an #opensource #Android?

Pay attention to it the next time you buy. ( #fairphone etc.)

@maexchen1 @ryanc Because for many that's simply not an option due to mandatory digital national ID relying on google or apple services for verification.

@Beiz @maexchen1 @ryanc

Italian national ID works on non Google Android, so it is possible.

It is not a technical issue, so a political choice.

@seindal @Beiz @maexchen1 @ryanc if you are referring to Graphene OS or LineageOS, IO app dosn't allow documents on non Google devices. Yes, it's a disgusting political/economical decision. Upcoming EU app is also expected to require SafetyNet.
@lollo004 @seindal @Beiz @maexchen1 @ryanc and if not for ID-apps, at least in Germany most bank accounts/credit cards will also force you to own either an iOS or a safetynet attested Android phone.

@mxk

You can choose your banks.

There are several that work in the browser.

I also don't understand why everything has to run in app.

Every additional app weakens the overall system and controlling the data becomes a hell of a ride.

@lollo004 @seindal @Beiz @ryanc

@maexchen1 it's an extremely privileged position to assume that this should be everyone's only criteria for choosing their bank.
And while there still is some chance for banks, for credit cards and reasonably priced depots the selection is a lot smaller.
And there is zero guarantee that a bank account that is usable without being forced to use a certain app as an authenticator, will continue to work that way in the future.
