Why do we say 'slept like a baby'? Babies wake up every two hours crying.

I want to sleep like my cat. 14 hours, no responsibilities, zero regrets.

@Natasha_Jay Our cat is the same. A blissful life!
@Natasha_Jay People who say “slept like a baby” have never had a baby.

@c_dan4th When someone says "slept like a baby" I always think of the typical baby sleeping position: on the back with the little fists to the right and left of the head and then imagine that person in that position 🤭

@Natasha_Jay

@c_dan4th @Natasha_Jay Slept like a baby, while both parents are awake. No airports, churches, etc., etc.
@Natasha_Jay I love this so much! Adding to my inspirational quotes collection.
@suzannealdrich
I especially love it when kittens look like they have partied hard before they fell asleep.
@Natasha_Jay I slept like a baby: woke up every two hours crying and shat myself.
@Natasha_Jay The cat is the real "baby" here.
@Natasha_Jay “It’ll be like taking candy from a cat!” would be shamefully easy, because cats don’t have sweet receptors on their highly-textured tongues, so they wouldn’t give a dried turd whether you took their candy… unless they were sleeping curled around it for some reason.
@Natasha_Jay Tigers sleep even up to 20 hours a day! I slept like a tiger sounds good.
@Natasha_Jay
Ahem as a representative of the Feline Cathood I take great umbrage in tha… 🐈 💤
@Natasha_Jay Koalas! Up to 20 hours a day. And not doing much in the rest of the time, either. And no large brain to worry about the world.
@HeptaSean @Natasha_Jay that reminds me of a BAHfest talk on mammal sleep patterns https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MUw3s4evhTE
BAHFest West 2014 - Sarah Hird: Why do Mammals Sleep?

@Natasha_Jay but like a hour here, get up, chatter at birds, an hour there, get up, check the markings etc
I'd rather sleep like a log, ie no moving and others can't tell if you're asleep or dead
@Natasha_Jay そんな眠り、今夜こそ欲しい…💤
@Natasha_Jay slept like a baby (terribly)
@Natasha_Jay Funny thing, in Dutch we say "slept like an ox", and I have no idea how good oxen are at sleeping.
@smveerman @Natasha_Jay In Norwegian the expression is "slept like a rock", but as far as I know rocks don't sleep at all 😄
@elinkorn @smveerman @Natasha_Jay ‘Sleep like a rock’ is common in English too. Or ‘log’.
@smveerman @Natasha_Jay Or "slept like a rose" and ditto.

@Natasha_Jay

yeah.. so I sleep like a baby most of my nights

@Natasha_Jay
The difference is: innocence.
@Natasha_Jay Reporters asked Sen. John McCain how he was feeling after losing the election to Barack Obama in 2008. He said "Oh I sleep like a baby: a few hours, then I wake up and cry, then a couple more minutes and more crying..."
@Natasha_Jay People who equate sleeping like a baby with sleeping well had one of those miracle babies I've only heard of from friends and relatives that very quickly moved to a sleep schedule that perfectly fit it's parents. I'm sorry, Madelene, I am very glad for you to be sleeping well because your baby somehow does 7 hours actually at night, I just nodded off because I've been awake 45 of the last 48 hours.
@Natasha_Jay
🎶Ev'rybody wants to be a cat🎵
@Natasha_Jay It's old men who sleep like a baby. They wake up every two hours needing to pee. Fortunately, most of them do not cry.
@MichaelB I feel sad if they don't cry when they want or need to. They're still human @Natasha_Jay
@Natasha_Jay crepuscular? But yeah, they more nap and reset afaik
@Natasha_Jay tbf, I slept like a rock as a baby. My mother thought something was wrong with me. Lol I've loved sleep since day 1 ✌️
@Natasha_Jay I slept like a log once, woke up with my head in a fireplace.
@Natasha_Jay maybe that is why my grandpa use to say he is going to take a snap < a short nap
@Natasha_Jay maybe sleep like a child? My 4-year-old sleeps so deeply (for 12 hours) that even the loudest noises - I.e. explosive thunderstorms - do not wake her up
@_elena similarly lucky with our 2yo.: once asleep, she could probably sleep through a nuclear war.
@Natasha_Jay I'm french and I sleep like a dormouse (*dormir comme un loir*). As their name suggest, dormice sleep (hibernate) for six months. Better than cats who get up regularly to ask for food.
@Natasha_Jay or better yet, like an adult male lion! 20 hours of blissful sleep a day!
@Natasha_Jay
"Oh I slept like a baby"
"Waking up every two hours screaming?"
"Internally, yeah."
@Natasha_Jay It is kinda dumb. Tell any panda-eyed new Mom you've slept like a baby and she'll probably throw something at you.

My family have used 'Slept like a log' all our lives.
@Uraael @Natasha_Jay
Stone was our object of choice around here.
@daarin @Natasha_Jay Eminently sensible. 🙂
@Natasha_Jay same thing goes for "god forsaken land"... I want a land forsaken by humans!

@Natasha_Jay

I have to confess, I'm not really sure I understand the desire for prolonged sleep. I get maybe 70-80 years of life if I'm lucky... Let's take 75 as a midpoint - if sleep 8 hours a day, I'm only experiencing 50 years of my life. If I sleep 16 hours a day I'm only experiencing 25 years of that life.

Now, if someone is living an unhappy life, i can maybe see the appeal, but it's not a solution.

@Natasha_Jay Perhaps that exactly what some of us mean. Crying, screaming. yelling at demons unseen?
@Natasha_Jay @AnarchoNinaWrites In Germany we say “I slept like a stone”, and I think it’s beautiful.
@schrotthaufen i mean in english we have "slept like a log" which is similarly endearing
@Natasha_Jay i was crying like a cat though

@Natasha_Jay I've been told as a baby I would sleep 16 hours straight if left alone. My mom took my pulse every know and then, would wake me up for feeding then I would fall back asleep.

I guess baby have no middle ground when it come to sleep

@Natasha_Jay Currently sleeping like my cats, but if they could wake up later than 5am and not mostly midafternoon, that'd be neat! (unless that means I'm allowed an afternoon nap...)
@Natasha_Jay or teens, who sleep a hell of a lot more than they did when they were babies!
