Todayโ€™s finally the day that Daniel Hannan, famously such a predictive monster mind, said we should all look forward to.
@stephenserjeant some things don't age well. But with Brexit predictions it has been probably more the case than in any other policy. Or does my European point of view make me see things wrong?
@geogoeroe @stephenserjeant That's a polite way of saying "we effing told you soโ€ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
The polite way of saying "told you so" is, "oh dear, was a bit worried that might happen". @anthonybearles @geogoeroe @stephenserjeant
@BenAveling @anthonybearles @stephenserjeant indeed. I apologise, not a native speaker. As subtlety goes, I try to keep my Dutchness hidden, but it's difficult.
No apology necessary. No politeness necessary either, not on that topic with this audience. ๐Ÿ™‚
Is there a Dutch equivalent?
(I have a Dutch brother in law; in his view politeness is achieved when the swearwords aren't specifically addressed at any particular person, but he may be atypical.)
@geogoeroe @anthonybearles @stephenserjeant
@BenAveling @anthonybearles @stephenserjeant en... Wat dacht je zelf dat er zou gebeuren? (So... What did you think that would happen? emphasis on zelf/you) is a good start in Dutch. Considered passive-aggresive, but mostly acceptable.
Nice. Reminds me the American expression: "And how's that working out for you?"

@stephenserjeant I'd send this to my British friends, but I think they'd get very unhappy.

@dascandy

I would like to send it to many of my Family, but they would call it a conspiracy anyway.

@dascandy @stephenserjeant See, I <would> send that to my British friends, <because> it would make them very unhappy.
@Illuminatus @stephenserjeant The subtext is that they likely follow me here, so in a way I did send it to them.

@geogoeroe @anthonybearles @stephenserjeant

@geogoeroe @stephenserjeant I learned to drive and got my licence in 2018/2019, just as Brexit was starting to be implemented. I got one of the last licences with the 12 star flag and every time I look at it it reminds me what we have lost.

The mechanic next door to my work rarely discusses politics as he's in an area which heavily supported Brexit, but more and more agrees with me it has been a disaster, as he ends up with vehicles in the yard waiting weeks/months for parts that were available within days when we were in the EU..

@geogoeroe @stephenserjeant Oh, no, it is unbelievably wrong.

Although I think a lot of it was simply wishful thinking, not predictions in any real sense.

It was all wrong. Of course, some of the people - like Hannan - are actual stupid enough to have believed it.

The Guardian
'Daniel Hannan's MEP group told to repay โ‚ฌ535,000 in EU funds

Exclusive: Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe accused of hosting luxury events of little relevance to EU'

Not a nice person.

@stephenserjeant It is sad that so many gullible people believed this drivel. Reform voters seem to still have a selective memory of the last years since the disastrous vote.
@IncHulk @stephenserjeant Reform Voters want everyone else to suffer, it gives them life. They are no different from Trump voters.
@stephenserjeant I am based in the UK (Scotland, thankfully) and still vividly remember the morning after. All of the household was in shock at the stupidity of our nation. I am still in shock.

@twoowls73 @stephenserjeant I was at Glastonbury, the mood was was the same. I remember Paul Heaton saying something along the lines of "what the fuck have we done now?!"
We were worried they'd be political violence on that day.

If you examine the geological record in certain places, take a deep core sample, you can clearly see a living record of when the asteroid hit that killed the dinosaurs.

Do the same to a Scot and you'll find similar records of Indyref and Brexit written in their cells, days that tore us in twain. The days after both were among the blackest I've ever lived through; everyone felt it.
@stephenserjeant Heโ€™s now Baron Hannan of Kingsclere ๐Ÿ™ˆ
@stephenserjeant who is making this up? Fake news doesnโ€™t belong on Mastadon.
@Becksy what do you mean? This post makes fun of predictions some Brexit clown *actually made* in 2016
@Becksy No, it's genuinely what he wrote in 2016. But you're right, it's obviously egregiously wrong, and many of us felt it was obviously wrong at the time

@stephenserjeant lol, our very own Nostradamus..../s

He's a salesman, he sold a lie, he got paid.

@stephenserjeant I don't think I'll be asking him for horse racing tips anytime soon.
@stephenserjeant thereโ€™s no cure for stupid is there?๐Ÿ˜•
@stephenserjeant somebody should set off fireworks in Lord Hannan's letterbox
@stephenserjeant beautiful, beautiful irony
LB: Daniel Hannan is a cunt, has always been a cunt, and will continue to be a cunt long after the heat death of the universe.
@stephenserjeant this would be lolz except it's desperately unfunny.
@stephenserjeant hahahaha oh dear, stop it, my farting strings cannot cope!
