On X11 and the Fascists Maggots

I can't believe I needed to write this but here we are.

https://blogs.gnome.org/alatiera/2025/06/23/the-fascist-maggots/

@alatiera I will fork though Wayland and sed replace every way with gay and use it
@evamik @alatiera I still need to implement a `gayland_color_v1` protocol to overlay a rainbow over a Wayland window.

Maybe we should modify all software such that it cannot be used without SED.
Then fascists have no more software to use because there's no way a fascist would ever use SED.

> You all need mandatory supervised access to the Internet from now on.

You went a full Torvalds mode there 👍

@alatiera concerned trolling, I will borrow that
@alatiera is that why people were clamoring for slackware to adopt xlibre this week? Pat shot them down, thankfully.
@garpu @alatiera Pat's a very sensible guy, and I'm glad he sees through all the fluff when making executive decisions for Slackware. It's part of the reason Slackware is my favorite distro. May he have many more years of BDFL-ness ahead of him :)
@TronNerd82 Yeah, he seems like a pretty cool dude.
@alatiera you don't understand, the only motivation is removing #DEI #discrimination, this is nothing but TRUE meritocracy at work, everyone can join in now (except for the #woke who are discriminating) (the gays are all in it, it's a Jewish conspiracy) (no we can't have women either, they have no idea what they're doing, they genetically belong in the kitchen) (oh and only people who speak fluent English, it's an essential skill) (no not the Indians, they speak weird) (no, not the blacks, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)

@xerz @alatiera Most meritocracy is ableistic, narcissistic, short-sighted privilegism.

(Actually — all, everyone else would choose a different term to not be confused with them.)

@alatiera i agree with many of these points and I'm nonetheless really unhappy with how you phrased the accessibility issues.

I've seen multiple threads by blind users, some of whom i know personally, raising many concerns about the accessibility of Wayland when it first became default and now again that x11 has been deprecated in gnome.

And i can 100% imagine your frustration when these concerns get drowned by trolls. But initially this did not read like that at all. 😔

@alatiera and i can imagine that some disabled users probably raise some irrational concerns because of the fear mongering by what you called "accessibility trolls". And i get that this too makes your life more difficult.

But please understand that breaking accessibility can make using Linux impossible so have some empathy even when people are wrong about this subject in particular.

@betalars
Quoting on that topic: "This isn’t about all the feedback, but about specific cases where people use this topic as a strawman and don’t even bother to check if what they read and repeat is true. We do take normal feedback seriously." https://blogs.gnome.org/alatiera/2025/06/23/the-fascist-maggots/#comment-14914

On X11 and the Fascists Maggots

Damn Jordan, what a sad title. I know dear reader, I know… 2 weeks ago I published a blogpost about the upcoming plans of GNOME 49 and the eventual removal of the X11 session. Since then, instead of looking at feedback, bugs and issues related to the topic, we all collectively had to deal with...

Rust in Peace
@alatiera over at https://github.com/X11Libre/xserver, they offer an X11 experience free of DEI.

GitHub
@stinerman @alatiera Is it a parodic repos ?
@ck0 @alatiera doesn't seem to be. It's really unfortunate that they don't seem to know what DEI actually is rather than a label for anything they don't like.

@alatiera to me it’s still surreal this fiery reaction is happening. From afar, ngl, on one hand, it’s a bit funny seeing the worst kind of people rage at the removal of X11 of all things.

On the other hand I feel so sorry for you and other GNOME folks because this is happening to them. Please make sure you treat yourself at the end of a couple of these interactions. We the users are cheering for you. :)

P.S. In the first paragraph, of course, I’m NOT referring to the people who genuinely have a dealbreaker *technical* issue with Wayland for whatever reason. Doesn’t mean they don’t matter, it’s just that they’ve been overshadowed by loud zealots. If you’re in this situation, please (respectfully!!!) contact the maintainers of either your app or Wayland or your compositor to figure something out together.

@alatiera
Kinda weird they care so much apparently, especially since it's about gnome which is like a very normie oriented DE. There's nothing stopping them from using smth like WindowMaker in all its old school glory on X11. I myself switched to Wayland a while ago and it's better if you ask me.
@alatiera As much as I love X11, I hate that so many people are toxic purists about it. In my opinion there's nothing wrong with Wayland, and people are free to use what works for them. I choose to use X11, and I'll keep doing so because it's what I like, not that I have any problem with others using either X11 or Wayland. I like the idea of XLibre adding new stuff, but everything else about it doesn't do shit for me, especially the dev's viewpoints. Here's hoping Xorg can pick things up :3

@alatiera Fascists can rot in hell. Really truly sorry you have to deal with this.

I have plenty of criticism for how Wayland has rolled out, but it is disgusting to even be incidentally standing next to these people and I want to be clear that I agree with zero elements of their dogshit ideas, from their culture war nonsense up through their deranged technical recommendations. The way to fix Wayland is not to go backwards to X11.

@alatiera I have no interest in defending X11 or fascists, both undeniably suck, my concern AT LARGE is compatibility (think *BSD, solaris, etc). While on the surface GNOME is just about the worst DE to complain about this for, when you think about the desktop utilities I can see problems emerging. I also understand freebsd supports wayland now but I’ve seen some shit in the industry and I dread thinking about what could potentially break in the long run.

Well, maybe the fascists who want to keep X11 confused X11 with Twitter.

After all, the logos are very similar.

@alatiera good on you for writing it. Can't believe that first comment. Great answer from you. 💚
@alatiera certified true by real gnome patriots
@alatiera they faces killing me why nobody gaf
@alatiera "On behalf of all the desktop developers"
....who are you, again?
@alatiera "Wayland is Gay" is the best selling point for Wayland I've seen in a while! 🤪

@alatiera

🤮 the phoronix comment section

happy pride month and free palestine ✊

@alatiera and it absolutely, positively is worth noting that Github is doing cartwheels, backflips, and literally any lie they can come up with to platform these literal Nazis. Who are gleefully and openly spouting bigotry and incitement in their issues, discussions, basically everywhere.

And Github is very, very well aware they are hosting literal Nazis doing literal Nazi shit. Nazis are very welcome on Github, per their support team.

@alatiera

So...
As someone who only got to use Linux very limited so far:

What is X11 and why are far right nutjobs so upset about its removal?

@karb @alatiera Previously valid concerns about X11's maturity over Wayland which have been progressively quashed as X development slowed and Wayland accelerated, which have evolved into weird anti-DEI sentiments, and fake concern about Wayland's accessibility that drown out the real concern, all while far right "devs" try to fork X and staple their agenda to it.

In the end, Xorg sessions are getting deprecated and Wayland is the future. Let the creeps stay in the past and don't give em an inch

@karb @alatiera I realize I failed to explain wtf X is. It's your windowing system, it's what paints the boxes on the screen. Wayland is the newer standard that has better security and performance for modern hardware. Only reason to hold onto X is if you're desperately compiling for a Pentium 4 or smth.
@alatiera I really hope people don't take this and go "everyone who supports and/or needs X11 is a fascist".

@alatiera Well, one fascist is quite famous for using the 𝕏 system.

(I wanted to copy this symbol from the wikipedia article on X11, but they've removed it in April, which kind of ruins the joke: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=X_Window_System&diff=1283798170)

X Window System: Difference between revisions - Wikipedia

@alatiera Heey, why is the blogpost gone? Could said maggots have infiltrated the blog itself? That can't be it, can it?
@alatiera article is gone 💀

@alatiera is a bigoted antisemite. Blood liberling jewish people with such words as "apartheid", "ethnosupremacist", "babykiller" and such. Block him and stop supporting GNOME as they promote such behaviour despite their Code of Conduct.

The arcticle currently is removed, but it basically boils down to calling everyone fascist and using hate speech towards everyone not supporting the cause (just like actual fascists).

#antisemitism #racism #fascism #fediblock

@saiv46

Receipts for the antisemitism?

@alatiera i use wayland and have no issues with it but maybe calling all your critics fascists isn't exactly the best way to change their minds
