If you add 22 hashtags to your image post, you can certainly add alt text.
@kimlockhartga and not just the hashtags copied into the alt text which i have seen 💀
@forestine OH I have not seen that. Holy No.
@kimlockhartga @forestine hashtags or sometimes just the whole post content. either way, no matter what you do, don’t be this guy: https://www.jwz.org/blog/2025/02/on-blocking-mastodon-hoa-edition/
On Blocking, Mastodon HOA Edition

One of Mastodon's biggest barriers to entry is the Mastodon HOA, the massive volunteer army of scolds who take it upon themselves to tell strangers that they are doing it wrong. It's like you're waiting in line at the grocery store and someone you've never so much as made eye contact with looks into your cart and decides to enlighten you that meat is murder. They feel better about themselves ...

@forestine @kimlockhartga my thoughts exactly. the article is IMO downright ableist and insulting to folks that need alt text as well as volunteers that help provide it. imagine begin so petty as to block someone over providing courtesy alt text. that’s like if you owned a school and someone gave you free wheelchair ramps so you banned them from the premises.
@GroupNebula563 @forestine @kimlockhartga His blog was enough to convince me to search out his profile to preemptively block.
@LibertyForward1 @GroupNebula563 @forestine @kimlockhartga I used to follow him and that blog post was what convinced me otherwise.
@Infrapink @LibertyForward1 @forestine @kimlockhartga yep. doesn’t matter how much of an Important Netscape Developer you are (were?), you don’t get to be a dick to other people, online or otherwise.
@LibertyForward1 @GroupNebula563 @forestine @kimlockhartga Thank you for that advice. I just learned to preemptively block people (I also just learned that I could change my keyboard in order to get a different emoji, but then the emoji is really huge)
@kimlockhartga @forestine oh, don't just put one space in the field either. don’t know why people do that but it’s worse IMO because it tricks people into boosting your post that otherwise wouldn’t. now I have to open every alt text field before I boost a post, just to be safe.

@GroupNebula563 @kimlockhartga yeah that's nasty stuff

or

"image"

@GroupNebula563
That blog post is full of ableist justification crap. Gross attitude.

@kimlockhartga @forestine

@GroupNebula563 @kimlockhartga @forestine This was such a lot of words to say he kind of resents blind people and their pesky access needs and would rather continue to exclude us than examine his behavior. I guess at least he's advocating for us to block him, which I would be delighted to do.
@greengaybles @kimlockhartga @forestine I mean go ahead and block him, if he hasn’t blocked you already. but yeah, lots of words. far too many.

@greengaybles @kimlockhartga @forestine tell you what' i've gone and added a "don't be this guy" section to http://bluepixelcomputing.com:8141/fedi/alt_text.htm

i was going to be funny with query parameters here but the webserver explicitly sends 403s to anything requesting a parameter it *DOESN'T RECOGNISE*. not tracking params. ANY PARAMETER. ANY. somehow, that tracks. i'd love to see what other gems are in this guy's .htaccess file...

Writing good alt text

@GroupNebula563 ugh, the comparison in this blog post is so terrible (about a random stranger scolding you for buying meat). It's more like telling somebody that the way they parked their car is blocking the wheelchair ramp (and that obviously is a good thing to do!)
@GroupNebula563 He could even maybe kinda not be completely wrong, if the alt text he was using were something like "Screenshot of the blog post containing the same sentences as the toot above"
How does he expect blind people to know, that it is not a screenshot of something completely different? They have no way of knowing that they don't miss anything relevant because of shitty alt text
(But copying those sentences when taking the screenshot would not even take that much longer. Just do it 🙄)
@Larymir @GroupNebula563 I almost fell for that argument, but sighted people read the text _three_ times instead of two...
@Larymir
Or even just don't include a screenshot of the text you're posting and linking to. That save him and the reader time, and also saves storage space for your instance.
@GroupNebula563
@Infrapink
Oh, good Point. If you have the time to add an unnecessary picture, you also have the time to provide alt text for it
@GroupNebula563
@GroupNebula563 @kimlockhartga @forestine There is a user called @usluck that pops up semi-regularly in the tags I follow - and often the memes posted are actually quite enjoyable. BUT the alt-text is always, always just the post text copied in. I’m fully sighted, but this nonetheless annoys me every single time.
@whybird @kimlockhartga @forestine @usluck@channels.im well I hope they get their act together, sounds like their posts are good at least
@GroupNebula563 @whybird @forestine yeah. There are people I like a lot who never use alt text. I don't unfollow them or anything. I just hope that they eventually understand the importance. George Takei is a good example of this. I like him, but I can't boost his posts.
@forestine ffs. ok *now* I understand how murderers get their initial impulse.
@kimlockhartga
Exactly (what I mentioned days ago). 👍
@TheBreadmonkey
@beandev @TheBreadmonkey we are on the same page, in many ways. I took a look at your profile and we seem to have much in common. My German is not great, but I do try. 😃
@kimlockhartga Now I’m walking around singing “22 hashtags and no alt text” to the tune of Springsteen’s ‘57 Channels (and Nothin’ On),’ so thanks for that.

@kimlockhartga maybe they'd do it more if they realized it positively impacts search results, since at least on Mastodon (dunno about others) (and at least with full text) the alt is searchable.

Or maybe not when people keep the image macro about not adding alt on purpose on standby like cmon.

@kimlockhartga If people can put content warnings on a plate of rice other people can certainly put CWs on pictures of whole body roasted pigs in various states of being carved up.
@kimlockhartga @sindarina you’re right… I’ve been slacking off lately and this reminded me that I can do better 😔 ❤️
@rafa @sindarina this is such a beautiful response. Thank you for including everyone in our community.
@kimlockhartga And maybe give some thought to which hash tags are really needed? I don't even use a screen reader and they make me tired.
@kimlockhartga plus Alt text gives you so many extra characters in each Toot.
@Bioalchemy13 There are many instances where I didn't get the joke without alt text, or I didn't know that kind of bird, or what the heck that food dish was. It helps everyone.
@kimlockhartga Good point. I'll be clicking on more ALT text soon.

@kimlockhartga so true.

I use the Toot! app on iOS to post, it has this handy toggle in the settings so I can’t post without adding alt text. It keeps me from forgetting!

@stubacon @kimlockhartga
@MonaApp also has this feature, which has helped me many times. I don’t even know where the toggle is; it is on by default, as it should be.

@kimlockhartga @cdevroe If you add 22 hashtags to your image post that is totally unrelated to the hashtags I follow and it shows up in my feed, I will block you.

Similar thought when folks don't define acronyms.
