If there's anything that illustrated the hollowness of the Democratic Party as an effective opposition for me, it's this.

Yesterday, I watched a video of a sitting US Senator being thrown to the ground and cuffed by fed goons for asking questions of the fed official he has direct oversight authority over.

Within minutes, I'd gotten DOZENS of texts from Dems and Dem orgs asking for $5-$50 to "fight fascism."

That's it. "Are you terrified that your country is slipping into fascism? Pay me."

@pluralistic I really fucking hate the DNC and ActBlue for this very reason. I’ve donate to the democrats and will do so again, but the consequence of even once donating to the democrats is to be constantly barraged by their bullshit in texts and emails, and it pisses me off to no end.
@billclawson @pluralistic Essentially, political power in the US is now divided between a repressive death cult and a fundraising business, and the reason that the death cult keeps winning is because at least you can get people excited about joining a death cult.
@angusm @billclawson @pluralistic when we’re all dead, the fundraising texts will stop, so

@steve @angusm @billclawson @pluralistic haha that’s what you think

Then you’re in hell and you get a passive aggressive email from Act Blue because it’s not like you need that money anymore

@Haste @steve @angusm @billclawson @pluralistic I was gonna say. I mean, I haven't got a "Remember us in your estate" from them, but it's probably because they know I don't really have one. I've gotten one from just about every nonprofit with whom I've crossed paths, though. (It's nice to know, I suppose, they couldn't afford to buy my data....)

@steve @angusm @billclawson @pluralistic Years after my father died, mom kept getting junk mail from Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes and applications for credit cards. I imagine our old address is still getting mail from these companies some 40 years later.

I heard the phrase "Death will not release you" and immediately thought of these. I wonder if the same goes for texts.

@mvilain @steve @angusm @billclawson @pluralistic The previous owner of my house has been deceased since at least 2017 when we bought the house from his next of kin.

We still get spam for him.

@steve @angusm @billclawson @pluralistic 20 years later I'm still getting life insurance pitched at my dead mother.

Nobody *ever* stops getting advertising.

@gooba42 @steve @billclawson @pluralistic

Doctors: Death occurs when respiration and blood circulation ceases.

Hemingway: Every man has two deaths; when he is buried in the ground, and the last time someone says his name.

Philosophers: A man is not truly dead until the last telemarketer stops trying to reach him about his car’s extended warranty.

@angusm @steve @billclawson @pluralistic I assume I end up getting charged with some kind of fraud but I'm always tempted to fill out the paperwork and send back a death certificate alongside it to request they immediately pay up.
@angusm @billclawson @pluralistic the American Experiment killed by a slim voting majority by Americans themselves who all will say they didn't see that coming and clearly didn't vote for that...

@mrt181

The so-called “American Experiment” (🙄) has died multiple deaths to the point that one must wonder if it ever really existed at all (with the exception of 2 short-lived periods of Reconstruction spaced 100 years apart). It never hung on the results of any single election, despite what liberals and centrists would have us believe.

@angusm @billclawson @pluralistic

Would buying Flavoraid for the death cult be a better use of my money than donating to Democrats?
@angusm @billclawson @pluralistic To be fair, the repressive death cult also operates a fundraising business.

@ferricoxide @mattblaze @billclawson @pluralistic

Are we sure they don't have one?

Nothing would surprise me less than to learn that the DNC had launched its own memecoin, failed to publicize it, and are now holding endless internal committee and focus group meetings to try to work out why no one wants to buy PelosiCoin.

@mattblaze @angusm @billclawson @pluralistic
I came here to say this.

I maintain a separate identity and email so that I can see what the other side wants me to give money to and how they're framing the issues. It's fairly simplistic, but the repetition of the message works.

@angusm

This is a pretty good depiction of bipartisanship, although it doesn’t capture the collaboration of the 2 US parties as well as the good cop/bad cop con-game analogy does.

@billclawson @pluralistic

@angusm

This hit a lot harder than expected.
