When you've started SDF-modeling a head, a duplicated sphere turns out to be way too large, and you're suddenly looking at butt-face. πŸ˜†

More updates will follow in this thread, if I manage to change butt-face into something worth sharing. πŸ˜…

🧡 Managed to mold "butt-face" (see previous post) into something more presentable.

Yes, he currently looks a bit like an Easter Island head, I know. πŸ—Ώ

SDF Modeler doesn't have as many shape options as MagicaCSG yet, so it's a challenging puzzle to achieve the right forms, but I think I'll get it where I want it to be, eventually. πŸ˜…

🧡 A little update of the stylized head…

It's an interesting exploration of possible shapes in SDF Modeler. Grouped primitives for compound Booleans are definitely essential here.

🧡 Modeling the stylized head has continued…

As you can see, SDF Modeling mainly exists of cutting and blending primitive shapes. SDF Modeler includes multiple iterations of nested shapes, for complex compound Booleans.

I think I'll start a barber shop, and call it Boolean Haircuts. 🀑

🧡 Stylized head modeling update…

I think the finish is close now. This is a rendering inside SDF Modeler, but when the model is finished, I'll export it to Blender for a LuxCore rendering.

🧡 I think I'm done modeling and coloring in SDF Modeler. Gave him a little blush to make him more alive.

Going to port it to Blender now, and will make a rendering in there tomorrow. To be continued… πŸ™‚

A Blender rendering of my stylized SDF Modeler head. I used the Cycles renderer. LuxCore is better for realism, but getting Sub-Surface Scattering right is easier in Cycles.

Stylized head model in SDF Modeler - Walkthrough

YouTube

🧡 I'm very grateful to @sascharode1986 for allowing me to test early #SDFModeler beta versions.

Today I tested an improved export algorithm: Surface Nets instead of Marching Cubes.

I did four tests in #Blender using my stylized high-poly head…

1-3 = Moustache close-ups.
Left = MC, Right = SN.

1. SN has better polygon distribution.
2. SN has no ultra-thin / overlapping faces.
3. Both SN. Right one has a Corrective Smooth modifier.
4. Ear smoothing in Sculpt Mode: SN has no singularity issues.

@metin @sascharode1986 Why do these singularities occur in Figure 4? I'm not very familiar with the Marching Cubes algorithm. A brief search did not yield useful results. But this looks bad, so it must be a general issue?
@daniel @sascharode1986 Marching Cubes and Surface Nets are algorithms to translate the implicit surfaces of SDF to meshes (explicit surfaces), using a number of configurations. MC is the fastest but less refined method, sometimes resulting in many edges converging to a single vertex, which is referred to as singularities. You can read about the algorithms in the Technical Reference section of my Big SDF Thread: https://blenderartists.org/t/the-big-sdf-thread/1293075

@daniel @sascharode1986 P.S.: MagicaCSG uses Marching Cubes for meshing.
@metin @sascharode1986 Thanks for the explanation! I was thinking about mathematical singularities, and they are probably just that. I should have known that you had already covered that in your mega thread πŸ˜…
@metin Thanks for sharing this very nice showcase! πŸ™‚
@daniel My pleasure! I hope you'll find the time again soon to do some SDF modeling yourself.
@metin This looks really cool! He looks somewhat familiar, but I cannot pinpoint which person this reminds me of πŸ€”
@daniel Danke Daniel! I guess he’s a love child of Jesus and Keanu Reeves. Let’s name him Jesus Reeves. 😁
@metin Sounds like someone who was at Woodstock wearing batik shirts πŸ˜‚
@daniel 😁😁 He also reminds me of Rustin Cohle from True Detective season one. I assume you’ve seen that. If not, stop what you’re doing right now and go watch it. πŸ™‚ It’s one of the best seasons of any series I know so far. 🀌
@metin You're right, I see the resemblance! But I have to admit that I haven't watched True Detective yet. Could you send me an excuse note for my employer so I can go watch season one immediately? πŸ₯Ί
@daniel I'll call your employer right away, and will also tell him to double your salary. πŸ‘
@metin Pretty sure this guy was in Deliverance πŸ˜€
@mbt3d Haha, that wouldn't surprise me. Great film! 🀌
@metin Fun character.
@vaughan3d Thanks, appreciated! It was quite a puzzle, because SDF Modeler is like a light version of MagicaCSG at the moment. πŸ˜…
@metin Are there any features that it has that are missing from MagicaCSG in your opinion?

@vaughan3d πŸ€” Good question… πŸ™‚

I love the customizable navigation controls. You can seamlessly switch between SDF Modeler and Blender or ZBrush.

And I like the fact that spline points in SDF Modeler are grouped objects. This enables you to, for example, rearrange spline points in the list, and even copy and paste points from one spline to another.

Also, you can render in 4K resolution. πŸ‘

@metin All nice features... Hope we get them in MagicaCSG at some point.
@metin Looks like a sculpt! Good job.
@JimPostier Thanks Jim! Getting to this stage involved some headaches, but it was an instructive SDF modeling exercise.
