Two updates:

(1) I'm leaving the tech industry. Hopefully "for good"; at the very least, "for now"

(2) If you subscribe to my blog, the content's gonna change; I'm dropping the editorial focus I've had since 2020 and going back to writing about whatever the heck I want. Some of the same stuff, some new stuff, we'll see.

Changing Directions - Jacob Kaplan-Moss

I have two important announcements:

I’m leaving the tech industry. Hopefully “for good”; if not, at least “for now”.

As such, the content on this blog is going to shift, perhaps dramatically. I’m going to be writing about a broader range of topics that interest me (projects around my hobby farm, wilderness trips, emergency medicine) – more writing for me, less writing for some imagined audience. (I’ll probably still end up writing about some of the same topics as I’ve been covering since 2020, just less often.)

I’m writing this post mostly to give myself permission to make that change, and to give readers the opportunity to unsubscribe/unfollow if they’re not interested.

If you’re interested in more details about why I’m leaving the industry and what’s next for me and this blog, read on.
…

@jacob Exciting! I guess if I ever bump into you in real life, it will be at a mountain ultra? Hopefully not with me in the role of accident victim.

@jacob one of my very best friends is a volunteer firefighter/EMT, admittedly in her spare time around a job in worksite safety. She finds it consistently satisfying and loves the camaraderie of it, often in stark contrast to the day job.

I hope you find that in what you pursue; from what I can tell it can be a very emotional profession in many ways.

I equally hope to still see you from time to time; having left tech, I imagine your attendance at PyCon will be less common.

@offby1 thanks, really appreciate the kind words. I imagine I’ll keep coming to PyCon; for me it’s been much more about seeing friends than about programming for years now.
@jacob Best of luck with everything! The EMT stuff sounds exciting.
@jacob how exciting! Good luck in your next chapter!!
@jacob Very cool. Best of luck and I look forward to hearing more about it in the future!
@jacob that sounds great and I am very happy for you. Looking forward to reading about your new path
@jacob all the best on the change; looking forward to the future blogs!
@jacob I 100% understand your decision and it’s one that’s rumbling through my head as well. Thank you for everything you’ve contributed along the years, and wish you the absolute best in this new endeavor.
@jacob there has never been a better time to get the hell out of the technology industry.
Congratulations!
@jacob
Congratulations! I hope the change is what you need it to be.
@jacob I wish you well in the first responder world! They'll be lucky to have you!
@jacob wows. My cousin’s husband did something similar, from civil engineering to EMT. As far as I heard he never looked back. May the road rise to meet you, as I think they say in Ireland!
@jacob Super! That’s very exciting. You got your exit. Well done. 🎩
@jacob Congratulations and good luck! My mother trained as an EMT in her 30s and went on to become a paramedic. She found it very fulfilling and I found it very cool and badass and fun to brag about on her behalf! I hope it’s a great fit, and if not, that you find another thing that is.
@jacob Congrats on pursuing what makes you happy! The blog has now been reclassified in my reader from "Development" to "Free Time". 🙂
@jacob all the best for your endeavors. Working in the emergency medical area is exciting and terrifying, rewarding but also stressful, and so much more, all at once. I'm only volunteering in that area, but it's been one of the best decisions I've made for the last couple of years.
@jacob this is awesome and relatable, and I warmly wish you all the best!
@jacob looking forward to reading about all of your next adventures and ponderings!
@jacob Happy to read this. Good luck!
@jacob How exciting — congratulations! Really hope you find all of the happiness and fulfillment in your new career — you deserve it

@jacob Well, you certainly have done a great more than most in tech. Thank you for your contributions.

About next steps: My personal recommendation would be to buy a horse and go riding as often as you can, it can counterweight some of all the time spent in your brain, with some time in your body 🙂

Best of luck

@jacob what a change... that's awesome! good luck to you!

@jacob I'm saddened that I won't have an excuse to catch up with you on a semi-regular basis at PyCons et al; but happy for you that you're both able to identify that you need to make a change in your life, and you have enough head room to be able to actually make that change.

I'm not sure I understand how being a paramedic will be *less* stressful though…🤣

@freakboy3742 I expect I’ll continue coming to PyCon/DjangoCon — for me it’s been more about the community and seeing my friends than about work for a long time. Hard to see giving that up!

And yeah the irony of choosing a field with an even WORSE burnout problem isn’t lost on me :)

@jacob @freakboy3742 nobody’s gonna tell you that you have to prove that an AI can’t do it before you’re allowed to start chest compressions though
@glyph @jacob Glyph, why are you giving the Torment Nexus new ideas?!
@freakboy3742 @jacob sadly, over here, we have *already* created the American healthcare system from the classic dystopian science fiction book “don’t create the American healthcare system”
@jacob Congrats & respect! I hope the change is good for you.
@jacob this is really phenomenal to read. I wish you tremendous success on your new path and I hope that I will continue seeing you around in tech community spaces

@jacob I wish you all the best in bold but quiet next steps and non-linear life moves. I have never regretted a single one, and look forward to following along.

If you have a nearby local roller derby league, they are always looking for EMTs to hire for games! Reserved seats 💚

@jacob Congrats! Aside from actually being able to leave tech, I feel like I could have written the "Leaving the tech industry". Sigh.

@jacob My first reaction to this is that paramedics saved my wife's life last summer, and I'm grateful to anyone who feels drawn to this work.

Secondly, as someone “in tech,” I’ll look forward to your broader focus in writing. The more time I’m here, the more I want other perspectives.

@jacob Whoa! Best of luck. 🤗
@jacob Congrats on such a big decision and best of luck!
@jacob Sounds like a difficult but gratifying move — I admire the courage. I hope you have a chance to write about the EMT world, as I have no doubt you’d have interesting and well-written insights. Good luck and best wishes!
@jacob Perfect ending to the article! Also many feels about this one, but you know I’m actually really excited for you
@jacob Congrats! All the best to you in the new journey and new work.
@jacob Congrats on the change! I'll keep reading!
@jacob Hey Jacob, thanks for all your effort in tech over the years, it has been very inspiring. I constantly refer others to your engineering management writings. I am grateful for all you've done and continue to do for Django. All the best with the EMT course and your future. I hope it brings you joy!
@jacob dang! Congrats on an exit strategy! Django changed my life (for the better), so I’m especially grateful for your contributions to “tech”.
@jacob Congratulations—very happy for you! The good you’ve done in “tech” is beyond measure; I suspect you’ll never know the true extent of your impact
@jacob Congratulations! Making a change like this can be terrifying, but when you need it, it's the only option. Wishing you all the best on your new journey!
@jacob I can't give this enough ❤️ to express how much I empathize and appreciate what you're doing. Very best of luck!
@jacob I'm very excited for you. It's a very bold and inspiring move. Staying subscribed to follow your new ventures 🙂 Best wishes!
@jacob Congratulations on following your heart. Working as an EMT was among the most rewarding (and exhausting) times of my life. Good luck!
