Two updates:

(1) I'm leaving the tech industry. Hopefully "for good"; at the very least, "for now"

(2) If you subscribe to my blog, the content's gonna change; I'm dropping the editorial focus I've had since 2020 and going back to writing about whatever the heck I want. Some of the same stuff, some new stuff, we'll see.

Changing Directions - Jacob Kaplan-Moss

I have two important announcements:

I’m leaving the tech industry. Hopefully “for good”; if not, at least “for now”.

As such, the content on this blog is going to shift, perhaps dramatically. I’m going to be writing about a broader range of topics that interest me (projects around my hobby farm, wilderness trips, emergency medicine) – more writing for me, less writing for some imagined audience. (I’ll probably still end up writing about some of the same topics as I’ve been covering since 2020, just less often.)

I’m writing this post mostly to give myself permission to make that change, and to give readers the opportunity to unsubscribe/unfollow if they’re not interested.

If you’re interested in more details about why I’m leaving the industry and what’s next for me and this blog, read on.
…

@jacob I'm saddened that I won't have an excuse to catch up with you on a semi-regular basis at PyCons et al; but happy for you that you're both able to identify that you need to make a change in your life, and you have enough head room to be able to actually make that change.

I'm not sure I understand how being a paramedic will be *less* stressful though…🤣

@freakboy3742 I expect I’ll continue coming to PyCon/DjangoCon — for me it’s been more about the community and seeing my friends than about work for a long time. Hard to see giving that up!

And yeah the irony of choosing a field with an even WORSE burnout problem isn’t lost on me :)

@jacob @freakboy3742 nobody’s gonna tell you that you have to prove that an AI can’t do it before you’re allowed to start chest compressions though
@glyph @jacob Glyph, why are you giving the Torment Nexus new ideas?!
@freakboy3742 @jacob sadly, over here, we have *already* created the American healthcare system from the classic dystopian science fiction book “don’t create the American healthcare system”
