The best career move I've made recently? Deleting LinkedIn. 🤓
@nixCraft The whole thing? 😇
@LinHead @nixCraft
I stopped actually using it *many* years ago (and never heavily used it), but does it harm one to keep the account rather than deleting it?
@dougmerritt @nixCraft Apart from the fact that you still get invites? I actually don't know. I made an account years ago and never posted a single thing - i think.
@LinHead @nixCraft, was just wondering the same myself. Would have been fun, watching the news reports about the site's disappearance…
@LinHead @nixCraft Ooooh. Now that would be a gift to the world. :) I know the joke used to be the biggest lie on the internet was "I have read the TOS" - but I joke that now the biggest lie on the internet is LinkedIn bios. :) I did a big social media clean up recently and as LinkedIn had turned into social media, I was very happy to delete my account. NO. It did not spark joy. No. I have not missed it. :) Rock on you. :)
@nixCraft it's the least awful and has its uses so I'm happy to keep mine going.
@nixCraft
Unfortunately only your account, and not Linkedin.
@nixCraft considering joining linked in. Is it still useful for jobs and such?
@jaark @nixCraft I got a lot of spam contacting me for "job opportunities".
@melroy @nixCraft I figured that would be the case, but is it possible to avoid the recruiter spam and actually find stuff?

@jaark @nixCraft not really. They are contacting you via internal chat. AFAIK you can't disable that.

You can however ignore them.

@jaark @nixCraft I'd say yes. Some employers ask to see a profile there.
@jaark @nixCraft not that I’ve noticed. A few nice ex-colleagues liked and some even reposted my calls for work. Not a single bite in months. Paid their ludicrous premium for job hunting. AI skip recommended wildly irrelevant posts. Cancelled that before it even renewed.
@nixCraft I never joined and banned their domain from my mail servers about 20 years ago. Likewise for Facebook. They used to spam a lot in their early years.

@nixCraft

You don’t make career by using LinkedIn. But you can still read or meet a lot of interesting and relevant people there who are still not here. ;)

@_RyekDarkener_
Yeah I mostly use it as a digital roladex for people I've worked with along the way. It's nice to have contact info and to see what people are up to when reaching out
@nixCraft

@independentpen

That’s pretty much all I do with it. It’s useful for locating missing colleagues from the past. Also can be helpful when looking for work to see who you know works there. Never used it as a “social” platform and just ignore the spam.

@_RyekDarkener_ @nixCraft

@nixCraft serious question: how do you search for jobs and professional connections? i mean i would love to do that but how am i, as an introvert who does not socialize around or speaks at conferences, supposed to find my next job? the 1000 small job boards that serve different kinds of startups in every city?
@grepe
I wouldn't use it for job hunting
@nixCraft
@nixCraft I feel obligated to keep it until I find a “real” job, as it is (unfortunately) one of the best resources to that end. Any assistance in that regard would be greatly appreciated 🫶🏻 #FediHired #FediHire #fedijobs
@nixCraft Why not take it to the logical conclusion and shut LinkedIn down? :3c
@nixCraft Thanks for the reminder to get rid of that trash.

@nixCraft Mine got 'compromised' about a year ago. I'm fine with this outcome now.

Congrats I guess.

@nixCraft Now we'll never know what this move has taught you about B2B sales.
@nixCraft Very very close to doing this myself. Are there any good fediverse alternatives? I can't seem to find any.
@nixCraft better job site(s) rec? linked-in is dreadful!
@nixCraft as an artist looking for work on there and seeing a slew of AI related brown nosing it was bad for my mental health
@nixCraft I dumped LinkedIn many years ago after they were caught selling my data.
