The new 'razor blade throat' Covid variant is causing an increase in hospitalizations across Asia

France reported a 19% positivity rate on tests

The US has detected it in a number of major cities

What's being done? They're taking away boosters. No free tests or paid time off

Wear a respirator.

@broadwaybabyto It's coming to Canada too - if it hasn't already. We have a lot of people who travel to & from Asia a lot in a few different big cities here. Vancouver has such a high Asian population that many of us here often call it Hongcouver.
@broadwaybabyto
And we already know that the Trump administration will do everything they can to downplay and undermine any kind of accurate reporting of COVID, so it's best to be overcautious.

Theyโ€™re going to try to take masks away from us too. Theyโ€™re already sabotaging the certification system.

@broadwaybabyto That's funny. They used to just call that 'Strep Throat'. What is up with these people?

Please advise. More, Thank you!

@heislertecreator2049 @broadwaybabyto Streptococcus is an entirely different organism, and I think you know that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streptococcal_pharyngitis

@kelleynnn @broadwaybabyto No, not really, but once I did have strep and when I would have to swallow, it was like swallowing a razorblade. I only have a ged.
@heislertecreator2049 @broadwaybabyto Strep is a bacterial infection, and is not remotely the same as Covid.
@nonehitwonder @broadwaybabyto no, I sort of get a very high level of difference, but nothing at all like you probably understand. I was mostly thinking anecdotally about a time when I had strep.... when I swallowed, it felt like swallowing a razor blade. Sorry to interject.
@heislertecreator2049 @broadwaybabyto no shade, we're all just people doing our People Thing. I used to get strep a lot before they took my tonsils out, and I also imagine the feeling is similar.
@heislertecreator2049 I think the term is meant to describe how sick people are getting with it, at least in part so they consider it might be Covid instead of writing it off as strep or a cold.

Not clear even after a web search which variant/s are associated with #RazorBladeThroat.

My suspicion is XDV.* based descendants, of which I think NB.1.8.1 is currently more common.

Google results are poor and I'm not confident in the webpage that claims the XDV based variants are the culprit.

Somewhat concerned that this commonly reported symptom appears a. more intensely painful, b. may be resulting from more severe lessions, & c. is located nearish to lungs.

@broadwaybabyto thank god for this platform - my wife is having some weird infection with severe throat pain and what doctor prescribed hasn't worked.

Maybe using names like this, for the variants will get more folks to get vaccinated.
