This isn't the flex you think it is; it's poor management for sure. You don't want engineers pushing changes while suffering from sleep deprivation psychosis.

@nixCraft Tech Bros with zero empathy hailing unhealthy practices and AI.

It’s rather cliche, huh?

@mahryekuh @nixCraft

I wonder how many talented people saw those kinds of work cultures and thought "yeah, no, I'm not going to work in the US", because that's one of the reasons I never accepted a job there, despite the insane increase in wages.
@nixCraft I wonder who took this totally candid and not at all staged photo.
@lizardbill @nixCraft Microsoft Recall watching every camera in the room for totally non nefarious reasons ?
@nixCraft three sleepless nights sounds just right for "vibe coding".
@Orb2069 @nixCraft sounds conductive for hallucinations, too...
@Orb2069 @nixCraft these are bad vibes

@cosmic @nixCraft

People seem to forget "Move fast and break things" only really works if you're trying to build a potempkin village to fool VCs and buyers.

@Orb2069 @nixCraft move fast and break things (for other people to fix after I cash out and move on)

@nixCraft @ainmosni

Yep, I don’t like rules but the one rule that I do enforce is that people take rest when they are tired or sick.

It’s the best way to prevent good #developers from writing bad #code.

@DevWouter @nixCraft

Or them infecting others, or them having long lasting consequences...

@ainmosni

Yep, nothing is worse than having a single developer underperform and then an entire team underperform due to sickness.

Also, working while sick means you will remain sick longer (and thus longer underperforming).

"So go home, take the week off, and only when you are fully recovered do I want to see you back."

@DevWouter @nixCraft @ainmosni who know which medicine the founding engineer got in order not to feel exhaustion anymore 😒
@nixCraft But it also explains nicely why "AI" is so bad...
@nixCraft dude is gonna end up hallucinating more than his LLMs.
@nixCraft "If I die, I want it to be while creating value for the company. Bury me at my desk."
@nixCraft TBH he's an AI engineer, not like he's doing all that much
@nixCraft My immediate reaction is, of course the "founding AI engineer" has a totally rad-looking setup, positioned where everyone else will have to sit and look at him, while they all have just a normal (perfectly sensible) setup. Compensating much, bro?
@stveje @nixCraft Yeah but two of his monitors are vertical, he must be doing really technical stuff. Or he uses a giant font because his eyes are too tired to focus...
@nixCraft If Ai is so almighty, the engineer would be sleeping nicely while Ai would do all the work for him. But shit doesn't work that way.
@nixCraft Man goes to CEO. Says he's depressed. Sprint schedule seems harsh and cruel. "Treatment is simple. Great manager, Pagliacci is in office today. Go and see him." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.”
@nixCraft this team never stops shipping or it gets the hose again
@nixCraft agreed, you definitely don't want your key engineers burning out. A bad place to be in.
@nixCraft cue the "exhausted gitlab employee accidentally deletes the production database" montage

@nixCraft

Tell me you have a stimulant problem without telling me you have a stimulant problem.

@nixCraft I'd rather take half as much pay, to be honest.
@nixCraft He has to do all nighters because he's shipping so many bugs because of sleep deprivation.
@nixCraft vibe coding is old news, real hackers are delirium-coding now

@nixCraft But this way you can ensure that the code the AI hallucinates is better than what your human engineers can do. This is the proof that generative works, and your company has achieved AGI!!!11!!!

I'll show myself out.

@nixCraft coding without sleep is a great way to attract bugs
@nixCraft as I recall from raising my daughter, 3 nights is when the leprechauns start to appear.
@nixCraft seems like the perfect opportunity to share this video again. Very appropriate. https://youtu.be/_o7qjN3KF8U
The Hustle

YouTube
@nixCraft even people at Microsoft crunching were smart enough to put a sleeping bag under the desk and sleep for a few hours.
@nixCraft Yeeeeeaahhhh, maybe someone who's not been 72+ hours awake should take a second look at the code before committing to production. Maybe.
@nixCraft
Show this post to your friends who don't think tech workers should unionize.
@nixCraft world’s most obvious red flag 🚩
@nixCraft Making your engineers hallucinate as much as the chatbots

@nixCraft I asked Gemini what date did Easter fall on this year. It told me April 10.

Keep on shipping ...

@nixCraft Day 3 was spent unfucking the build following the sleepy cockups on Day 2.

@nixCraft I have pulled three months of all nighters (sleep two hours from 6PM to 8PM, work, sleep from 5AM to 7AM, work, repeat) during my M.Sc., and my legs were numb from work and sleep deprivation. This was due to a planning error on my part, and I learnt my lesson.

I did pull ZERO all nighters during my Ph.D., and finished on time and with much higher quality work.

So, no, this is not a flex. This is self harm and setting bad examples.

@nixCraft what is it with tech industry having no concept of the human factors or the dirty dozen?

In aviation mechanics aren't allowed to work more than 12 hours without a minimum of 8 hours rest after.

@nixCraft It works for doctors...

@nixCraft

Advertising that you and your company is awful on every level is so stereotypically Tech Bro.

@nixCraft
love to commit code that other people will spend months fixing
@nixCraft I don’t want engineers being brown
@nixCraft Really curious to know what kind of shit they're shipping “non-stop”
@nixCraft
Maybe that's the reason why your 'AI' is hallucinating.
@nixCraft I still don’t see how doctors get away with it. If we just trained more people to be doctors they wouldn’t all have to be able to work eighteen 18 hour shifts in a row. That seems to be what are internships prioritize for some reason though. Couldn’t be profit? No, that’s crazy thinking.

@nixCraft

I used my own sleeping bag. I can not sleep in a chair.

I never pushed to PROD on Fridays though.

That was reserved for drinking.

@nixCraft So they're working harder, not smarter?
@nixCraft 🐧 decades ago i worked in a team like this. all jobs only worked out when everybody put in endless overtime. it worked for a certain time. but it gave management a completely false idea about project time management. they didn't learn that endless overtime might be ok in emergency situations once or twice but should be avoided in normal workloads. they learned that projects worked out well in very short timespans and of course expected this to become the norm. they used this in their sales promotions: we can do this project in a much shorter time than the others ... of course this collapsed within a year.

@nixCraft “founding engineer” pulls the third all nighter, but the founder rolls in at 11am.

This team never stops exploiting labor.

@jonathankoren @nixCraft And as soon as that one person leaves the company is over?
@nixCraft "the sign is *inside* the building. we know where we work!"
@nixCraft what does 'founding X engineer' mean? A fancy title to pay the poor fellow a little.
