Hi folks, I'm trying to jumpstart federation on my little gotosocial instance and get a more full feed of things to read and interact with.

I could use your help. If you could boost this, I would appreciate it. If you see this and favorite it, I will follow you if your interests seem to align with mine.

I'm not asking for follows... rather I'm asking for you to help me shout out into the ether that I'M looking for people to follow. My main interests are going to be hashtagged below.

By the way, the way hashtags work here is that currently, if I search, I only see what my server is already knows about... which would mean just the folks I follow, since I'm a single-user instance. Not very helpful 😂

I will also be using one of my apps that can load the main feed from other servers, to see if I see something interesting. If you see a follow from me and come here to check me out... I mean you no harm and I come in peace.

Thanks all!

@electragician

Our interests align and I too am here because of a self hosted #gotosocial instance.

Fight the power, or something.

@electragician you know you can follow hashtags just like users?
@paulmasson Yes sir, but that only works on a server that has a bunch of users, pulling in data from all the different people they follow.

You could think of hashtags as more like filters, on a single user instance. If the data isn’t there, the hashtags just don’t work… or rather they only show me what I could see just by looking in my feed.
@electragician yep gts definitely needs some kickstarting before you get good federation going.

Gave you a boost. But if it doesn't work, you can always go to a big site, make an account for yourself there, and follow/boost this account from there ;)

@electragician

On my GNUsocial instance I created a @[email protected] user that I subscribed to every user I could find on other instances at the start. That way, my server had a wide variety of messages in its database, and I could use my own account to follow hashtags of interest without getting overwhelmed myself.

Unfortunately, some people who saw a follow request from an account named "firehose" thought that it would spew out a firehose of spam, and blocked it. Best find another name...

@bobjonkman Bob, that's both a neat idea, and funny :D

@electragician Yea I am new here and pretty confused on how this all works but it seams cool.

Have you seen the show Pantheon
if you into SciFi its a absoute banger.

@cjwr1ght Thanks for the suggestion Chris!

I’ll add it to the watch list!

Pantheon looks *excellent*. This is what social media is best at...recommendations from people with good taste. 😂

Cheers!

@cjwr1ght @electragician

@fancypants @cjwr1ght It does look good. It's definitely on my list!
@electragician
Following some Flipboard or Newsmast feeds is quite good for widening what you see in the global feed. I generally filter them out of the home timeline. I use Fedilab on my phone and Phanpy on the desktop.

Have you browsed the FediDirectory?

Interesting accounts to follow on Mastodon and the Fediverse

@electragician hiya! Also, try using a relay like infosec.exchange to get more stuff sent to your instance.
@chewie Thanks Chewie! I don't think those work (yet?) with GTS. I'll read up on them some more though!
@electragician ah, apologies! I should have checked - I've not used gts. I know they work with pleroma and mastodon.
@chewie No worries... I appreciate it all the same!
@electragician welcome to the fediverse 😀
@electragician Not to add anything redundant, have you checked starter packs? https://fedidevs.com/starter-packs/ - there might be something in it for you, thematically speaking, even if it implies following more.
Mastodon Starter Pack Directory | Fedidevs

Discover, create, and share Mastodon starter packs to help new users find interesting accounts to follow.

@carstenraddatz Bookmarked sir! I will look into it.

I think I remember these from a while back when I joined my first Mastodon server.
@electragician just popping in to suggest @clarkesworld magazine if you're into sci-fi.
@electragician I too run a #gotosocial instance and I started out by following my favorite podcasters, since most of them have an account on mastodon. I then visited some interesting accounts on a web browser and viewed their following tab, where I copied the full address (that's both @ signs for user and server), searched for it on husky on mobile, and added the ones that seemed interesting. Manual labor, yes, interesting people to follow? Definitely!
@alexk7110 Thanks for the tips Alexandros!

@electragician have you see the tag- users from fedi.buzz?

It’s a reasonably good way to get hashtag content onto your solo instance.

@amd @electragician wow, that is an incredible resource

@knova

Yup. They’re not very well documented (at all?) on relay.fedi.buzz but they’re a big win for an isolated little instance.

@electragician

@amd I'm going to look into this now.

Thank you!

@electragician it’s pretty straightforward

You can follow @tag-klr650 and it will boost all the #klr650 content it comes across.

You can also share an api key with fedi.buzz to get your content boosted by them as well.

I don’t do this with my personal user just for security reasons but I created a secondary user that still sees public posts I make on my GtS server and gave an api key to fedi buzz to get me a little more reach for when I’m asking questions and am hoping for a response.

@amd @tag-klr650 That is awesome. Thank you so much!
@amd For what it's worth, this was a fantastic suggestion and resource. Thanks again!

@electragician Interesting, I hadn't really thought very hard about the difficulty of account discovery from a small self-hosted account.

I recently set up gotosocial to play with it thinking about helping one of my kids try to selfhost an account on their own domain for their jewelry/silversmithing/lapidary business. (I created an account for myself there as @emile)

Curious to follow along and hear more of your starting-out-self-hosting journey :)

@esnyder @emile You bet! I think I need to let the dust settle now and then fine tune things.

I think it's going to work out just dandy though :)
@electragician All possible actions... actioned. 😆
@electragician Hey sure, why not! After all, we're all seeking just a little bit of attention in this suddenly unfamiliar world. Best of luck to you!
