I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

https://18f.org/

18F: We are dedicated to the American public and we're not done yet

For over 11 years, 18F has been proudly serving the American people to make government technology work better. We are non-partisan civil servants. 18F has worked on hundreds of projects, all designed to make government technology not just efficient but effective, and to save money for American taxpayers.

RE: DOGE review of the 18F Program -
The purpose was never to fix problems. It was to find fault or failing that, to break things.
THIS IS MAGA!
@skiles I'm so sorry. Thank you for all you've done. Here's hoping we have a country left in 4 years so that we can repair the mess the GOP-tRump-Musk-Putin party has created & rebuild.
@skiles Damn... Shit keeps getting stinkier! You have all my support!
18F: Sabotage And Showboating - Digby's Hullabaloo

Musk is a dangerous phony I created this graphic when Ramaswamy was still a part of Doge. White House tech veteran, Waldo Jaquith, posted a Bluesky thread about what Elon Musk's DOGE saboteurs did on Friday to a federal technology group where Jaquith once worked. We know by now (and as you read on Saturday) that Musk's

Digby's Hullabaloo

@skiles Thank you for your service.

I’m heartbroken by all these losses, day after day, but a big part of that is being proud of what y’all accomplished.

@skiles John, while unsurprised, know that my appreciation & admiration for 18F and the other transformational technologists at the Federal level; as a former CIO of a State Board of Elections, a current CIO of a Public Transportation Agency, and a Citizen; all three of which has seen the passion and results of what you were doing, is huge. All of you were playing a critical role in showing how IT, done right, could truly improve the lives of American Citizens

I am so sorry it has come to this

"we were working on important projects, including improving access to weather data with NOAA, making it easier and faster to get a passport with the Department of State, supporting free tax filing with the IRS"

All projects #Musk and #Trump/#Krasnov opposed. Sad, but not surprising the axe fell upon you.

May your resistance be loud and effective.

Might I also suggest updates on the #Fediverse and not just #Bluesky as the site currently suggests?

Give them hell. We're all with you.

@skiles sorry, for you and us!

Was 18F involved in online passport renewal? It was without doubt the single best govt website and process I've ever used.

I'm a middling web dev of 20 yrs and the UX, process and flow was just amazingly fluid and nigh on as perfect as it could be

@pixelpusher220 Yes, 18F was a part of that passport website work! I'm glad you noticed and enjoyed it!

@skiles @dcbikeguy John and colleagues, thank you and sincere condolences. It’s one thing to get fired, but entirely another when you’re laid off by ignorant children (Elon included).

Thank you for your work, and here’s hoping the Cuban idea works for you all!

#18F

@skiles Could you set yourselves up as a commercial business, perhaps a workers' co-op (and perhaps retaining the 18F brand) to bid for commercial work but including commercial work on the government projects you have special expertise on?

After all, your team (and brand) have an established reputation, and the government is going to have to hire someone (probably by competitive tender) to build and maintain those systems!

Good wishes to you all from Scotland!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@skiles Sorry to hear that. We all know this is nothing to do with competence or saving money but lining the pockets of the overlords. I expect to see one of the tech bros to be funded to provide a worse service at huge profits.
@skiles
Back when 18F was new, I applied to work there. I always admired the work they did. Make plenty of noise!
@skiles This is such a tragedy. As a former government software engineering contractor, I can attest that the system in place for contracting software development specifically prevents good software design. There is no way something like login.gov could have been created in that environment. This is a terrible loss.

@skiles
Thank you for your service. I'm pretty sure you didn't take this assignment for the money but rather to help the US government. It's disappointing that the gov't is not more appreciative of your efforts, but that's actually pretty low on the list of things that our present gov't has done that is disappointing.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I hope that the folk with the skills to do this work, both technical and interpersonal will land squarely on their feet.

@skiles
I like Cuban's suggestion, but I suspect that Musk is too stiff necked to admit their mistake while users suffer and they spend more trying to keep things going. The epitome of efficiency!

I'm sure there is a market for someone like the 18F group in private industry and hopefully enough of the economy will survive to make that enjoyable and profitable.

best,

@skiles
Have you thought about joining Mark Cuban's effort to retain 18F as a group of consultants to the government?

I also like someone's suggestion that the consultancy group be named 18FU...

@skiles
Sorry if you know more than how to press the power button on a PC, you cannot be a senior engineer in #Musk 's elite unit.
@gleick
@skiles i noticed a “follow us on bluesky” prompt at the end of the post. you should totally start an official mastodon too! real decentralization seems greatly aligned with your cause, and the support levels for it on here would be tremendous
@skiles
This regime wants more contractors

@skiles

Can you serve as a hub for story collection? We voters don’t know what the Federal government does for us.

Maybe help laid off (words matter so I think you need to frame it as Republicans fired us without cause, or DOGE fired us without cause) staff organize their story (e.g. give such people a wizard to guide them through telling their story) and, necessarily anonymize it?

Then make the stories & people available to media?

We are in a civil war with ruthless Republicans.

@skiles @SrRochardBunson So powerful, thank you for posting!

@skiles

Thank you for your service. I've seen a number of posts about the purging of #18F on LinkedIn. I've been working to update @wikipedia articles with the record of this carnage, with the help of the @internetarchive :
