@ycwang @pluralistic US citizens have been deported. There have been many more instances of almost deported citizens. Green card holders have gotten it so much worse. And then if you don't even hold green card status you are well and truly fucked if you see ICE.
When you are kidnapped by people in masks who don't check papers, don't identify themselves, don't even show you badges, or allow you to see an imaginary warrant it won't matter what papers you have. It doesnt matter what rights you try to invoke. You could have a passport or green card in your back pocket and they will just sneer and take you away anyway. There are documented cases of ICE not believing a citizen or green card holder, roughing them up, taking them to an ICE 'holding cell' (Incarceration camp), and then only releasing them when they surrender their belongings or after the press and/or locals put pressure on them. They are constantly using excessive force so you might get bruised up for simply looking 'like one them them'.
This is something a lot of people who aren't part of a marginalized group don't understand. Rights are for those who have the power and privledge to enforce and enact them. The first to lose and the last to gain them...minority and marginalized groups. It's easy to ignore a Hispanic woman pleading to not rip her away from her family. She's Hispanic. That must mean she's here illegally. Since she's here illegally she's probably violent and deals in drugs. Since shes violent and deals in drugs she is not allowed human rights. And if pushed, theyll quote the same fucking lines: "we are targetting violent criminals". They'll drag that woman into an unmarked vehicle, all while she screams, sobbing that she has little children born here. They'll do this after they broke down her front door and traumatized her family whose only crime was to be human with the wrong skin color or wrong religion or wrong speech.
Once we take rights from certain groups, no one has rights. If I can nab people and send them away or disappear them into an internment camp why bother being careful? If you have a quota to fill...why not just act on those 'innate police instincts' (ie racism)?
