Tiny reminder that it's important
to boost posts on Mastodon!

Liking only will not help a post being seen more. Boosting will!  ✨

Boost the posts you want others to see. Add hashtags to your posts to help others find them.

This is the Fediverse way

#Mastodon #Fediverse

@Em0nM4stodon yeah, because its 'real time' its easy sometimes to feel like its shouting into the void! So hashtags are so important and as you say ... Boosts !!
@Em0nM4stodon
Mastodons lack of an algorithm is a blessing and a curse.
When I only see new toots on my timeline it means I can go a long time without seeing certain content creators / artists I follow.
So you’re right about boosting interesting posts!
@Em0nM4stodon No just change your to read more Hashtags or personal pages instead of following. For me Boosting is often like spam. Same Stuff twice. So no i am team Whats new like discover boosted one or right now posted on my server. Instead of boosted followers in my timeline.
@Em0nM4stodon as a newbie here, thank you for this wisdom!
@Em0nM4stodon I'd like to boost more, but I feel like my local instance would vibe with the lack of CW on political posts on many of the posts I see. Maybe quote posts will help 🫤
@Em0nM4stodon you used the wrong logo at the end.
Fediverse is not the same as mastodon
😉
@Em0nM4stodon
I'm just really bad at boosting. Something has to live in my head rent free for a while before I consider it shareable. Unless it is time-sensitive
@Em0nM4stodon It would be nice if there was a "most liked" tab, too.
@Sibshops agree. Boosting fills my timeline with a whole load of stuff that isn't from me. I'd like to see what those I've followed have liked. I think... @Em0nM4stodon

@Em0nM4stodon

Very important point. Since leaving Twitter I've cultivated the habit of having my timeline run 60-80% others' posts,

@Em0nM4stodon Appreciate the tip as I'm new around here and still trying to find my way

@Em0nM4stodon

Are there any fediverse apps *do* use liking to change the display order of posts? I'm pretty sure Lemmy does (treating likes as upvotes), I know mastodon doesn't, not sure if any of the forks have a recommendation/visibility system, and no idea about misskey-family instances.

Not that it really matters, I still tend to compulsively boost anything I find cool when I like it, unless it's missing a CW or image alt text or just doesn't feel like something I should publish forward.

@Em0nM4stodon

To an extent. Never boost posts which cite The Grauniad or Apple.

@Em0nM4stodon your posts will get more boosting if you remember to include alt text for images.
@maccruiskeen @Em0nM4stodon and CWs (or other clear markets, such as hashtags, that can be caught by filters) for unpleasant topics
@Em0nM4stodon Mastodon’s Explore → Posts view is an algorithmic feed of trending posts that uses favorite count in its algorithm. Favoriting a post helps a post appear here. It’s where I found your post! Source: https://github.com/mastodon/documentation/issues/1458

Given that mastodon tries to avoid algorithms that impose preferences onto users, it would be good to thoroughly document the algorithms used in the "explore" sections. Currently the documentation ...

I've come to Mastodon from Facebook a year ago and can report that I personally find boosting to be annoying and I have boosts hidden for everyone I follow.

If I don't, the ratio of personally written posts to boosted posts is about 5 to 1 and my feed is swamped with well-meaning spam.

When I want to know what's going on outside my bubble, I enjoy scrolling the "Explore" feed, which is how I encountered this post. I understand this feed to be informed by both Boosts and Favourites (though opinions seem to differ). I therefore dole out the Favourites very liberally.

I guess we're all different and it's great that the Fediverse empowers each of us to tailor it to our needs and preferences.

@Em0nM4stodon Thanks! Still learning the ropes :)
@Em0nM4stodon yeah, i boost so many posts that most of my page is boosts. @Mastodon really needs to add a way to filter out boosts from profile pages
@jakeyounglol @Em0nM4stodon @Mastodon true. Many of us are working around this via the justmytoots frontend, but it should be a built-in feature.
@jakeyounglol @Em0nM4stodon @Mastodon This, yes. I enjoy seeing boosts, but need an option to just see original content from those I am following.
@Em0nM4stodon
That's one of the reasons I like Mastodon. Boosts & likes works like I think I always wanted & assumed Twitter worked.

@Em0nM4stodon somehow there is no liking function in my mastodon app so I just keep boosting posts.
@Em0nM4stodon However, it's also the Fediverse Way to not boost posts if they have images that don't have alt texts for the blind and visually impaired. Because, indeed, it is the Fediverse Way to provide those.
@Em0nM4stodon I'm kinda new here, which button is 'boost' and which is 'like' Thank you.

@Em0nM4stodon
It's true, but there are also bots like @trending_bot and @TrendyBot

Those react through likes, as far as i know.

@SheDrivesMobility

@Em0nM4stodon All very well, butI wonder if I boost what Isee from you (which I appreciate, and is boost-worthy), then why aren’t the (small number of) people that follow me following you? I know that a least one of them is, so do they get the boost twice?
@Em0nM4stodon I am definitely in favor of boosting lol I mean with no algo things that need to be seen may not get to see the light of day due to time zones etc. There seems to be an anti-boost mentality among some, that their feeds need to be a pure stream of personal thought. I for my part know that I’m not entertaining enough to pull off such an account 😆 boosts ahoy!

@sayonaraminasan There is a way to mute someone's boosts without muting their original posts, for people who prefer that. People who don't like boost can simply use this mute-boost feature.

Personally, I greatly enjoy all of the boosts! And have discovered so many amazing content and people from other's boosts!

@Em0nM4stodon I concur 👍🏿 one of the great things about mastodon and the wider Fediverse is the amount of customization on offer here 💯
