Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared.

Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%.

Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared.

ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis is the most detailed look yet into a rise in life-threatening complications for women experiencing pregnancy loss under Texas’ abortion ban.

ProPublica

There’s no federal methodology for studying complications that arise during a pregnancy loss. To understand how Texas’ abortion ban is impacting maternal health, we consulted with researchers to craft one.

Here’s how we sifted through data on millions of pregnancy hospitalizations and analyzed the outcomes before and after the ban.

Texas Won’t Study How Its Abortion Ban Impacts Women, So We Did

Since Texas banned abortion, no one has studied the statewide effects on pregnant women experiencing complications. Here’s how we sifted through data on millions of pregnancy hospitalizations and analyzed the outcomes before and after the ban.

@ProPublica Higher mortality rates translate to higher insurance costs for hospitals and while their clients die, their national standings will also drop. Mesh this with the doctors who will not go there to practice, which leads to fewer hospitals, clinics, labs, etc. And the patients will go elsewhere.
Good job, Red Texas. You'll be reaping what you have sown for many years, as your wives and daughters die. Good job MAGA. Are you great yet?

@ProPublica

"A first-of-its-kind analysis by ProPublica found that the sepsis rate in second-trimester pregnancy loss hospitalizations increased by more than 50% after Texas’ near-total abortion ban went into effect in September 2021. The analysis also identified at least 120 in-hospital deaths of pregnant or postpartum women in 2022 and 2023 — an increase of dozens of deaths from a comparable period before the COVID-19 pandemic."

This is the work of a cult of death, not life.

@ProPublica I believe the oath was: do no harm. You can have illegal abortion clinics, but you can't come up with illegal care clinics? What's wrong here. We have midwives! For centuries women assisted women in birth! Now it is a male thing and they don't know how to act! Having given birth myself, I would and could assist any woman drawing from experience. I am sure that the sepsis rate would go down! This failure to act is a ridiculous failure of mindset sub combing to tyranny. #midwives

@ProPublica But it's only women who are suffering, right? So it's OK.

#CrueltyIsThePoint.

@dfs_comedy @ProPublica #EvangelicalPatriarchy does not care about women. It just wants to use them to service their needs, feed their egos and wipe their arses when they sh*t. Oh, and breed. Got to maintain the gene pool.

@ProPublica What I'm curious about is what the rates are among Black women compared to other groups. If it follows existing trends, Black women will have even worse numbers (see linked article for a hint as to why). And the cynic in me wonders if that's the point of the law.

How Serena Williams Saved Her Own Life

Black women are nearly three times more likely to die after childbirth than white women. Serena Williams was almost one of them. Here, in her own words, she tells her story.

@ProPublica Next law: Banning sepsis (reporting).

@ProPublica

Abortion. Is. Healthcare. Banning . Abortion. Kills. Women.

@ProPublica “the rate of maternal deaths in Texas rose 33% between 2019 and 2023 even as the national rate fell by 7.5%.”
@ProPublica The cruelty is the point.
@ProPublica This is such valuable journalism, doing work that should be done by public health agencies but just isn’t for political reasons. Thank you! You have earned my recurring donation many times over.

@ProPublica Rebellious, revanchist & revisionist abortion bans impose involuntary reproductive servitude, violating the Reconstruction's Thirteenth Amendment & leading to mothers' deaths due to sepsis & more complications.
Their deaths are on Greg Abbott & his mal-legislating "Republican" accomplices.

The balance of this Essay describes and analyzes originalism from a different point of view, centering the experiences of Black women and girls. It then argues that the Court's selective canvassing of history exposes a serious fault in the legitimacy, integrity, and character of not only Dobbs, but also its supposed application of originalist methodology.
