🎉 A new thing I made — Citywide, a sans serif typeface inspired by mid-1900s bus roll signs.

It has some real charm, feeling both informal and buttoned up in the same breath. It’s still a work in progress, but already a large family of widths and weights, plus italics.

Citywide

Citywide’s letterforms draw from a bus roll sign I found at a flea market years ago. I’ve probably lost myself staring at that sign everyday since, thinking about how the type system works while trying to puzzle out some of the unusual choices.

I love the little inconsistencies in proportions and strokes across widths, as well as its desire to be unambiguous, large, and legible from a distance.

I originally used this inspiration as a subject to teach myself how to use font making programs. My first run at it a couple years ago was pretty rudimentary, my second was a bit better.

Citywide is my third iteration on the idea, and one I felt good enough about to release. I’m happy with the current milestone, and would love to keep adding to it: lowercase, and maybe more widths and weights.

I hope you enjoy it too ✌️

Also, I know there is so much awfulness to process and try to overcome every damn day. Continuing to make things has been a small light for me, a way to fill my heart and mind up again to deal with everything else. 💜
@jasonsantamaria This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it out. 😄
@jasonsantamaria Wow, great find, they don’t make them like this anymore! Very nice you turned it into a typeface!
@martinmajoor I catch myself just staring at these shapes constantly! Thank you 🙌
@jasonsantamaria Congrats on the font, it's very beautiful! I had a similar experience when I was in a museum in Glasgow a few years ago, where I took this photo. Thank you for reminding me!
@jasonsantamaria I feel like there should be a law: any typeface that looks vaguely like Eurostile should have samples of “ENTERPRISE” and italic “STAR TREK”
@jasonsantamaria Love it, and an absolute bargain with so many weights and styles! 👌

@jonhicks I think so! Pricing is a puzzle to me, but I mostly just wanted people to use it 😂

Thank you, sir!

@jasonsantamaria well, bust my buttons! Look at this! Congrats, Stan!
@jasonsantamaria Congratulations on releasing Citywide! Well done sir.
@delvefonts Thanks very much! It’s been living in brain for too long 😅
@jasonsantamaria Congratulations! Happy to see this out there!
@JTDType Thank you, sir! I’m happy to get it out there too 😅
@jasonsantamaria This is wonderful! 50+ fonts, so it is flexible and widely usable.
@jasonsantamaria
Why is semiwide wider than wide and why stop at wide and not go wider and wider long face
You horse?
@jasonsantamaria This is great. I love the way that the appearance of certain glyphs can totally change the feel of a word but it still works like one typeface. You killed it!
@DunwichType Wow, thank you so much for the kind words! I agree, it’s always held an odd allure and charm for me. I’m so happy to put it all together.
@jasonsantamaria JASON I love this! I have always been jealous of those signs and knew you had a couple. Did you write a blog about them 15 years ago or am I just imagining that?
@onpaperwings Thanks, Doug! I don’t think I ever wrote about my signs specifically, but I probably droned on about them to you before 😅
@jasonsantamaria Check you out, makin’ fonts! Very nice, Jason.
@slye Thank you! I’m having a lot of fun learning and making them <3
@jasonsantamaria ty for this, i love it! it's now the headline font for my little blog https://benwhite.com.au/ :)

@d3v1an7 Wow, looks great! Thank you!
@jasonsantamaria I am so happy to see this released! Beautiful work, I can’t wait to try it out. 🙌
@kjellr Wow, thank you so much, Kjell! ❤️

@jasonsantamaria That bus roll sign you got is fab! I’m fascinated by them - always wanted one, and when I saw a local one on eBay last year I had to buy it. Visions of hanging it in my tall stairwell. Not sure on the date but I love the typography and the destinations are where I grew up.

Unfortunately the thing is *huge* and slightly too wide for the wall on the stair too! I really don’t want to cut it so I’m trying to find another spot for it even if it has to go on the ceiling 😁

@LDJ Wow, this looks amazing! I ended up splitting mine in two so that I could hang more of it. It has a sewn seam I undid (figuring that I could always resew it if I wanted). But, like you, I had always imagined hanging it in a really stairwell too 😂

@jasonsantamaria Oh that’s cool! I don’t think mine has a seam but I’ll double check.

I’m now down an internet rabbit hole trying to pinpoint the age of it by looking at old city bus photos - I’m wondering if I might be able to find out the route number and then work out the age 🤔 Look at these beauties! #BusDetective #NewcastleUponTyne

@LDJ Oh nice find! I also posted on some transit subreddits to try and track down the company and route mine is from. I think I have some general ideas, but can’t totally confirm.
