If you are staying on a corporate
social media platform because the people you follow are still there, consider others are also staying there because you are still there.

Someone needs to start the move.
Be that person.

Leave X for good.
Leave Facebook forever.
Remember blue skies eventually turn grey.

Embrace the social media that cannot get sold to a billionaire. Embrace the Fediverse 💚

@Em0nM4stodon

I left X back when it was called Twitter. Shortly after Elon took over, it became obvious that it was going to hell. I left all other social media behind in early November. I will never go back.

@proxyhell @Em0nM4stodon left both more or less in 2016/2017 checked in about once a year and actually deleted fully this year!!
@proxyhell @Em0nM4stodon I thought Exactly the same. The moment that Guy took over I erased my account there. 😁
@Em0nM4stodon Left Twitter as soon as Musk took over, left FB 2 months ago when Zuck grovelled to Trump!
@Em0nM4stodon I not only did that, even started my own server!
@Em0nM4stodon also try not to use and google stuff as well
Maps replacing with Waze
Been using brave browser for years so no Chrome

@kcpoole @Em0nM4stodon

Google owns Waze. Open Street Maps is an alternative.

@w_b @Em0nM4stodon ahh did not know that thought they were still independently owned :-(
Any other route mapping app that not google
@kcpoole @Em0nM4stodon Google bought Waze on 2013
@kcpoole @w_b @Em0nM4stodon I'm trying HERE WeGo (here.com) as alternative to Google Maps (a Dutch company, I don't know much else about them) and so far it's going well. The only thing I'm missing in comparison to Google Maps is a bit more information about points of interest, like website and opening hours, maybe a picture of the place. But other than that, it's pretty good. In Finland it even gave me public transport routes that were accurate.
@w_b @Em0nM4stodon open street maps does not do navigation I thought,
Anyone know of magic earth?
@w_b @Em0nM4stodon
Tried magic earth and it does some weirdness,
Now on Here wego and it's excellent
The desktop website is great and you can easily plan a route there and transferred to phone

@kcpoole @Em0nM4stodon

AFAIK OSM doesn't do routing. There are apps that use the data to offer routing.

@kcpoole @Em0nM4stodon

Both Google and Apple have kissed the golden sphincter. Which phone OS to choose...

@Em0nM4stodon
If I didn’t need to be on them for work, I’d be off completely.

I sometimes find myself doom scrolling there and getting angry. But now I see it and switch it off.

@Em0nM4stodon I just brought my instance back from the dead. I'm glad I have the option.
@Em0nM4stodon I just started my migration. I was never much of a Twitter user, luckily. FB is my big one but only for groups and memes lol

@Em0nM4stodon Blogging + rss is good too! If you need a platform, I built one

@Em0nM4stodon If you keep going to the same bar daily after the Nazis have taken over that bar, you are at least a Nazi sympathizer if not a Nazi yourself.
@Em0nM4stodon Any suggestions for how to help others find a new platform without bringing too much attention to where I’ve gone? I want to encourage my friendlist to join me here, but I don’t think posting my handle on FB would be the wisest. Or am I mistaken?
@Em0nM4stodon Part of the problem is that Meta will suppress posts that try to encourage people to leave so I have no way of telling people I want to leave, and I want them to come with me.
It took me a while to leave X because everyone I knew was there. But one day, I got tired of scrolling for hours and seeing nothing interesting. I finally decided to let it go and move here (tried Bluesky but my experience was worst than X) to meet new people. And honestly, I don’t regret it one bit!
@TheLe0 Welcome! It's a friendly bunch here.
@TheLe0 I really want to join Blue Sky, some college friends are moving there but the format is too much still like twitter. Mastodon actually reminds me of Facebook but I breathe a sigh of relief because it is more international. I think my favorite format ever was one of my first- AIM Chat. Pity it was discontinued.
@J_Peregrine I gave Bluesky a shot because everyone seemed to be moving there. But within 5 minutes, my feed was full of stuff I didn’t want to see (basically people showing their naked bodies 🫣). I tried blocking it all, but in the end, it was easier to just move here. The content and people here are exactly what I was looking for.

@TheLe0 Bluesky is dull. I honestly found nobody I wanted to follow or even engage with. I've been here a couple of weeks and I'm still learning what the zeitgeist of this platform is.

But I feel safe and empowered here.

@Em0nM4stodon X was easy to leave, but Facebook's messenger is terribly hard since there are many people in group chats I'd have to convince...
@xphentom @Em0nM4stodon There's no "convincing" for a lot of seniors. They know Facebook, but getting my 87 and 91 year old Aunt and Grandmother to text and receive family photos with a phone for instead of a keyboard isn't feasible. The cordless phone and computer generation are happier going back to mailing photos than creating a fediverse account.
@Em0nM4stodon I left and encouraged others to leave. Some did. Some didn't. I never really used fb... it was way too toxic. Rarely used insta... it felt like low brain as well, didn't see the point in x, didn't join Bluesky. Mastodon had felt like I finally looked under the right rock and found my people. I'll be here unless it becomes infiltrated.
@Em0nM4stodon never used Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok(which got heavily censored recently), only use YouTube and Mastodon and have deleted insta a few months ago 🫶
@Em0nM4stodon i can't believe Von der Leyen of the EU still posts on Musk's X given the abuse he has hurled at Europe. Block/boycott X and Meta and Tesla and Amazon and Google and PayPal as much as you can. We deserve much better and there are alternatives.
@Em0nM4stodon done since two years. Happy about it. If they want my data to train their AIs, they'll have to grab it by force or cost them a lot.
@Em0nM4stodon That’s a good idea in theory but I’ve been off Facebook for a decade now, and nobody has followed, so I’ve just lost touch with a bunch of people, and everyone in my local community is on Facebook.
It has so many utilities and such a critical mass, that there are no alternatives to the way people have gotten used to living, trading and connecting. Especially not in my country.
Twitter is a different matter and was easy to dump in comparison.
@Em0nM4stodon I left them all and never looked back!!!
@Em0nM4stodon I tried being the first person years ago, but nobody came along.
@Em0nM4stodon I recently deleted my Facebook account. 15+ years of connecting with family, friends and awesome groups down the drain... And I blame it all on Zuck's bootlicking arse.
@Em0nM4stodon I deleted my Twitter account when “that guy” bought it. Deleted Facebook and Instagram 5 weeks ago. I have a Bluesky account, which I do find easy to use but I understand that Bluesky will eventually meet the fate of other social media. I like Mastodon. I’ve said before I think it has an unfortunate name. I think many people were drawn to Bluesky based on its upbeat name. What the hell is a Mastodon? Maybe this is a marketing problem.
@divVerent @Em0nM4stodon I did, but not for any political reason. Facebook shut down their Basic Mobile site (not app) and their main one is terrible with screen readers. But my friends didn't follow me. I had to make new ones here. You make it sound as if, when someone is the first one to make the switch, everyone will follow him. That's simply untrue, though some may be lucky.
@divVerent @Em0nM4stodon Also, not all Fediverse sites are accessible either. I started on Friendica and had to leave because of the constant issues. Now, I'm on Akkoma and love it. But it's not as simple as choosing a platform and continuing with life as usual.
