@snopes
Mastodon has just 1 Aโ€ฆ who fact checks the fact checkers? ๐Ÿ˜

@laescude @snopes Fact checking and spell checking are not the same thing. Although confirming an organization's correct spelling is kinda both.

And frequent misspellings and grammatical errors are an indicator of low-quality writing that is often lax about facts, too.

So... different, but definitely linked.

@snopes

did @snopes make a typo?

true

@brawaru typo fixed.
@snopes @brawaru Might be better to just replace the whole Infosec (Mastodon instance) text with just Fediverse.
@brawaru @snopes
After more than a year here I'm down to only typoing it around 25% of the time ๐Ÿ˜
@brawaru @snopes also their link didnโ€™t go directly to the validation. I had to click through to find it. But, hey, theyโ€™re new to this format. Give a little grace. ๐Ÿ˜
@brawaru
Dang, they're on it! It's already fixed.

@Sibshops @snopes infosec exchange is probably *the* instance that should ban making an organizational profile without doing dns verification.

@Sibshops @snopes Unsolicited instructions: Add this HTML somewhere on the page that resolves when you visit `https://snopes.com`:

```
<a href="https://infosec.exchange/@snopes" rel="me">Mastodon</a>
```

Then, add `https://snopes.com` to your Mastodon profile's โ€ Profile metadataโ€ section.

Then, expect your webserver to be regularly queried by every Mastodon instance 24/7 until the end of time.

@snopes Hey, you guys going to plagiarize posts here? Looking forward to it!
@snopes Be sure to verify your account, so noone can impersonate it!(x2)
Snopes should investigate the origin of Mastadon
@snopes
@osma Any relation to John Mastodon? ๐Ÿ˜
@snopes you misspelled Mastodon though
@oblomov @snopes I thought that was the joke
@vintagecomputerer @snopes nah it was a typo and they fixed it.
@snopes Welcome to the Fediverse! You might want to add verification to your profile, but fact-checking yourself is a nice touch. ๐Ÿ˜

@snopes
Welcome to the Fediverse!

An even better validation of this fact that you might consider is verification:

How do I verify my account on Mastodon and the Fediverse? | Fedi.Tips โ€“ An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@unixwitch @snopes Came here to propose the same ...

@rstub @snopes

I've been not the only one ... since the fediverse is federated, it tends not to show all answers and people give the same hints.

(Since this post has a useful howto link, I won't delete it. It might help snopes and others to verify, if they want to)

@unixwitch You appeared first on my server. But yes, I can well imagine that more than one person suggested that.

@rstub
You see (most/all?) other answers, if you visit the "original page" of the post.

(Which is easily done in the web interface, but on mobile clients - at least the one I use - a bit more cumbersome)

@snopes FYI you can make a verification link for your account from your own web site to make a verification check mark on your account profile. It basically confirms that your web site claims your Mastodon account as official. https://joinmastodon.org/verification

@snopes @tanghus i think it would be more useful to say its a fediverse account. That you happen to be on a mastodon server isnโ€™t really that relevant, imho :)

@snopes

I missed you.
Welcome!!

@snopes fediverse is working.
@snopes Glad to see people comming to #Fediverse, but is this #cookiewall with preselected stuff and no "I don't want any #cookies" actually necessary?
@schmaker @snopes yes GDPR requires it.
@snopes @maurice GDPR does not require dialog without "I don't want them" button
@maurice @schmaker @snopes Well you are always welcome not to use unnecessary cookies and then you are not required to show any banner.
@snopes welcome snopesโค๏ธWe hope you create a Pixelfed account too, the best alternative to Instagram.
It is growing rapidly now and will surpass Mastodon in just a few months.
Weโ€™ll be waiting for you on Pixelfed!๐Ÿ’ฏ

@snopes WELCOME! It's great to have you here.

This makes me so happy. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hey @snopes!

Is it planned to do verify your account here too?

You can look at https://infosec.exchange/settings/verification how to do that.

@snopes
Thank you for writing all the articles I would read over summer break as a teen when I had nothing else to do ๐Ÿ˜…

@snopes clever announcement.

Sadly, when I visited the site from the front to confirm....

In the footer links: Facebook (Meta company), Threads (Meta's Threads), and X (Musk's Twitter) along with Bluesky (at least not as bad yet). There's no Mastodon icon.

"Try Snopes FactBot AI" is linked at the top of search results.

More Facebook and X linked icons are prominent at the top of articles.

I prefer trustworthy fact-checking sites provided by real people. That doesn't appear to be Snopes (this account or the site).

@snopes It's a pity your web site is no longer usable because of all the ads and pop-ups.
@TimWardCam @snopes Firefox with ublock origin (and no script too optionally) fixes any ad problems.
@skribe @snopes It's pretty good, yes. I haven't tried it on Snopes yet, I don't think.

@snopes welcome to the fedi

this is the whey ๐Ÿง€
FACT CHECK:
