I feel pretty bad about the current state of Pixelfed.

I've been working on it almost daily since 2018, but I took a break in September 2025 to focus on Loops.

I did ship Custom Filters, Pinned Posts and more that month, but I still had to complete 6 milestones for the Loops NLnet grant.

That being said, I engineered a robust ActivityPub system in Loops that we can use in PF

So after Starter Kits get shipped in Loops this weekend, I'll be focused on fixing Pixelfed bugs to make it fun again!

Pixelfed does too many things.

I now realize that. We need to focus on improving core features and make them stable and rock solid across web and mobile.

Collections, Portfolios and Stories are really cool features.

But more importantly we need to improve format support, allow mixed albums (video + images), preserve ICC profiles and allow you to tag any location, not just the few known ones, just to name a few.

We have a lot of work to do, but I’m confident that I can make this happen. 🚀

Building Loops from scratch last fall, with the knowledge I've gained over the years was truly refreshing.

I now have so many improvements and tricks that I can bring to Pixelfed, that will help solve nearly every complaint.

I'm super pumped to revitalize @PixelFed and make it even better for everyone.

Someone (and I cannot find that post in my feed again 😐) mentioned that after an update, the AI Kill Switch ("Block AI Enhancements") in Firefox was reset to "allow", even though the blurb states clearly that new stuff will be opt-in only.

I can confirm this.

Shame on you, Mozilla! I'll be switching to an alternative browser now.

ATProto has done an amazing job in terms of attracting developers with extensive documentation and easy to use SDKs/libraries.

I think ActivityPub can do this too, we're a bit more fragmented, and it does seem that individual developers can build and ship faster than the ActivityPub stewards/orgs.

So I've been working on my own take, in between my other projects, to build a powerful resource that best explains ActivityPub for devs with real code examples and demos.

It just takes one person 🚀
