Trump is threatening ”shock and awe” next week. I fear that he’s hoping he can trigger huge protests, use that as an excuse to crack down hard, exert power over protesters—including using violence against them—to set a precedent, create fear, and ultimately shut down further efforts.
BronMason (@[email protected])

@[email protected] Yeah—Announcing the raid ahead of time is an invite to organized resistance, which can lead to violence & provide trump his excuse to declare martial law. If it doesn’t doesn’t, there will be a new raid on another city next week. Think of trump’s 2917 Muslim ban & the protests it triggered; only this time the protests are quelled by US troops under the direction of Hegseth. Scary #trump #immigration #chicago #raid @[email protected]

@GottaLaff @bronakins
I don’t know how to determine what protest prevents harm to people and what protest creates future harm.
Uncertainty is the ally of authoritarians.
Countering a felon in chief is the game and we know there are no rules.
@GottaLaff
This was my first thought as well.
If deporting was the ONLY goal, the element of surprise would have been beneficial to ICE. The "Heads Up" announcement was precisely to get a rise out of people to trigger protests. Martial Law anyone?
@GottaLaff Raids on migrants are coming. Expect them in a blue state to push for him to be able to arrest a mayor.
@jenzi Yep. He’ll use those raids to hurt this country in myriad ways
Predicted the Chicago raid here
@jenzi @GottaLaff Chicago is prepping for a shit storm. The deportations are supposed to start there.
@misterspinalzo @GottaLaff I predicted it in that post, look at where we are. He wants to remove this big blue bastion in the middle of the country.

@misterspinalzo @jenzi @GottaLaff ICE will find attempting to strike a target when and where they are expected and people had time to set up on them to be lots of "fun."

That's why they never showed up in 2019 when Trump kept self-doxxing his "family operation." DC was a named target with named weekends. Every fucking time we were ready and waiting, not once did they show up.

Finally Van Spronson's sacrifice and counterattack killed their will to fight, ending the "family operation" in defeat for Trump.

Depending on how smart Trump's advisers are we must consider the outside risk that ICE is bait and the real targets are ourselves. Such an operation would however require moving a far larger force that a couple hundred ICE thugs into Chicago and that should be detectable with some observation.

@GottaLaff Your fear is spot on. That is exactly the plan.
@WarnerCrocker So either people will obey in advance, or, they’ll be driven to protest and get their asses kicked.

@GottaLaff Yup, The bigger part of the game is using the violence to declare a state of emergency and then put as much of the other plans in place under that cover.

But you know this.

@WarnerCrocker @GottaLaff Thing2 and I are marching Monday in Portland, but it's midday on Day One so I figure he won't deploy the troops yet. From then on, I don't plan on making myself a large open target like that. Surreptition is the way.

Good luck, and thanks for putting Stevie Wonder in my head!

@msbellows @WarnerCrocker @GottaLaff

@WarnerCrocker @GottaLaff Something a bit like that was tried in China during the tian an men incident - they pulled the police, etc. completely out figuring on looting, etc., so there would be an excuse to bring in the troops to restore order. People caught on, and simply behaved responsibly. But of course they cracked down anyway.
Heard about it some years ago from a co-worker who was a student in China during those protests and (if I remember correctly) was one of the protesters..
@WarnerCrocker @GottaLaff Once that starts Trump's legacy becomes civil war in the US

@GottaLaff @WarnerCrocker

Or we get our own version of the troubles.

@GottaLaff @WarnerCrocker Or be driven to fight from underground and DO the asskicking

@GottaLaff

Protests in the street are totally ignored by autocrats - often only bringing blowback.

Protestors - and all decent people - need to be looking at a #GeneralStrike

@TCatInReality I wish. Will Bunch has been calling for that for YEARS. Nobody runs with it.

@GottaLaff

Maybe a few more failed protests will cause people to reconsider tactics.

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff

One of the 'advantages' of forcing people to live hand-to-mouth is that a general strike is difficult to justify for many, even most. Just one more way in which autocracy and wealth disparity go hand in glove. I'm not saying it'd be a bad idea, but it would have to be arranged such that people get the support they need during that time.

@theogrin @GottaLaff

Very true, but some of the most successful strikes have been by people barely above starving who know there *must* be a change

@TCatInReality I don’t know. Americans seem reluctant to unite against this asshole
@GottaLaff @TCatInReality
How do you unite with the virtually 50% of those that have an interest in what is happening actually want it to happen. Until things collapse enough to affect them, nothing substantial will happen.

@dsmdexter @GottaLaff

Did you mean the 50% that have no interest in politics? Those are the ones who don't vote and just let this all happen

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff
No, I was talking about the ones who did get off their asses and chose to elect a dictator.
@dsmdexter @GottaLaff
Ah, the 50% of those who voted. But there's far more people who didn't vote at all - and that's why we get nutjobs like him.
@TCatInReality @GottaLaff
There is no reason to believe that had they all voted, they would have voted in any different percentages to those that did vote.

@dsmdexter @GottaLaff

And no reason to think it would be the same.

But yes, an even bigger problem is the propaganda/normalization machine that led 76M to believe electing a felon was a remotely sensible act.

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff
The law of large numbers says that the distribution would be similar. I haven't seen a representation of the demographics of those who didn't vote to see if they are similar to those who did vote.
@TCatInReality @GottaLaff Sadly, all people have to do is leave their phones at home and stop using Big Tech, so easy, but they refuse.
When they stop using their Big Tech provided social media, they cut off advertising dollars and also cut the supply of surveillance data that feeds the beast. But they just won't even consider it.

@bjb @GottaLaff

Agreed!

But of course those products are designed to be addictive.

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff
All the more reason to stop using them. And stopping doesn't have to be cold turkey, just find ways to not use one thing. Then another. Then another ...

Anyway, fun anecdote. I went to a shopping mall one time, quiet time, not many people there. I went into a store where the sales clerk was behind the counter reading. I browsed, 5 minures later they looked up and saw me, started, apologized profusely and asked if I needed anything.
1/2

@GottaLaff His first term was a steady attack on the first amendment; it’s reasonable to expect those efforts to ratchet up this term. I foresee the darkest period in American history. I hope I’m wrong.
@adhdeanasl Darker than the Civil War? Or is the characterization of dark based on different qualities for each period? Do you expect another civil war? States seceding? Widespread bloodshed? I don't foresee all that, fingers crossed, but I think it would be fair to call fascist America its own special darkness. I guess we'll soon see how fascist America goes. .@GottaLaff

@Nonya_Bidniss
The American Civil War had clearly drawn battle lines, so if you weren't in the line of fire then your life was as normal as supporting a war could be.

This would be a war against cities. So, yes, darker than the Civil War

@Nonya_Bidniss The civil war didn’t feature the wholesale gutting of the economy for the benefit of the ultra rich or the ending of rights for huge portions of the populace. @GottaLaff

@GottaLaff
They were hoping that for J6, 2021.
The word that spread to those of us who disapproved Trump was, "stay away, avoid DC."

The same should apply now. Stay away. This is no time to stage a protest.

@GottaLaff they love him for his attacks on the left. If he starts right away with arresting a bunch of liberal protesters then what better way to feed red meat to the base and set the tone for the future
@Danetteb What future would that be? Oh yeah. The bleak one.
@GottaLaff dystopian to use a literary term which seems more appropriate

@Danetteb @GottaLaff

that will work until republicans cut social security and medicaid and dismantle ACA

the red states voted for donny and they are about to be thrown under the bus

@samiamsam @Danetteb @GottaLaff
They'll soon turn onto corporate donors. They won't need them. So they'll throw corps under the bus.
@samiamsam yes but they’re technically after a theocracy so what they want to do is drive more people to churches. The churches then dole out food bank supplies or housing assistance based on whether people come to church or attend bible study. And they will undoubtedly try to funnel some of this money to churches @GottaLaff

@Danetteb @samiamsam @GottaLaff yes, you know how that area in Oregon decided they would arrest homeless people for being homeless if there are shelter beds available? There was a news segment about the available shelter beds, they went into this shelter to show rose and rose of empty beds, it was a church affiliated shelter and in order to get shelter there you have to accept Jesus as your savior and you have to attend church services every day.

So basically it’s illegal for people not to convert if those are the only shelter beds available and I don’t understand how that’s not a first amendment violation

But I love the people, they were choosing to be arrested rather than go to the Jesus shelter

@maggiejk
Shelters are often run by donations and religious organizations. One here used to have a sermon and singing each week. If you didn’t participate, you didn’t stay. They aren’t federally funded so they can do what they want. That’s the whole problem with many many shelters and how they can mandate who sleeps with who- whether a trans person can come in…
@samiamsam @GottaLaff

@Danetteb @maggiejk @GottaLaff

the whole premise of state run social services is that there are no religions strings attached

i recall stories in the 1980s about this

stories about how churches were forcing parents to make their children attend church education and church services in order to get help

it was a scandal because most people thought that churches would help anyone with no strings because bible and jesus

the fundies /evangelicals had other plans - capture children in religion

@GottaLaff Scary thought but sounds possible.
@GottaLaff Yeah, he'll almost certainly manufacture a national emergency to get expanded powers, following the example of his hero, Hitler. I've been assuming it'll be a creative interpretation of "invasion" since he's already said that, but he'll certainly use widespread civil unrest if it's handy.
@GottaLaff There will be another next week whether we protest or not. We have to fight him at EVERY turn, or WE look weak. I'm within driving distance of Chicago. Who's going?

@GottaLaff
The only protest that could impact Trump would be deafening silence.

Make the people responsible for him pay. Target Republicans in Congress - make them own this at home. They wanted it, they got it. Also, hurt his sponsors - Musk, Zuck, Bezos, etc. Make them pay for his actions.
