Now it’s official.

Multiple scientific observers confirm that global temperatures in 2024 not only exceeded 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial average, but have actually reached 1.6°C (‼️).

We are in a climate emergency.

"As history confirms, people will change their minds about almost anything, from which god they worship to how they style their hair. But when it comes to existential judgments, human beings in general have an unfalteringly good opinion of themselves and their condition in this world and are steadfastly confident they are not a collection of self-conscious nothings."
-- Thomas Ligotti
@breadandcircuses It seems readily apparent that we will accelerate into a wall (mass human die-off) before those in power take serious substantive action. Even then, the powerful will likely just scurry to their bunkers to reinvest in the same failed system (disaster capitalism) until they're forced into compliance (with guns and gulags). Our oligarchs can't/ won't help us. They're the problem.
@MaierAmsden @breadandcircuses This is why I've embarked on a permanent #SpendingStrike, where as far as possible I either avoid, redirect or postpone any spending that was going to capitalist and corporate entities. Of course it's not possible to #OptOut completely, but since the current system is slowly squeezing us all to death, we can at least slowly squeeze back.
@MelissaBenyon @breadandcircuses I'm with you. It's tough though. Some things I need that only shitheads sell.
@MaierAmsden @breadandcircuses I know. But if we do as much as we can... The good thing about a #SpendingStrike is that it's personally beneficial in the short term, e.g. walking somewhere instead of driving, so even if we never make a dent in the machine, at least we're improving our own health, wellbeing and budget.
@MaierAmsden @breadandcircuses I don't think that people in power will take action even after hitting that wall. They will build closed fortresses with controlled climates for the billionaires and watch the world burn while drinking champagne.
@breadandcircuses Had to look it up, 1.5C is 34.7 F., so one can comprehend.
@Leefellerguy @breadandcircuses not quite!! It’s an increase of 1.5 C or an increase of 2.7 F from what ever temperature it is outside. So a nice day of 71*F becomes a hot day at about 74*F
@breadandcircuses this may oversimplify many complex and difficult issues, but fuck, we fucked this shit up.

2024 is confirmed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) to be the warmest year on record globally, and the first calendar year that the average global temperature exceeded 1.5°C above its pre-industrial level.

You can not even trust a 3-day weather forecast these days.

@breadandcircuses We will continue to do nothing.
@elricofmelnibone @breadandcircuses Yup. Don’t care, too obsessed with money…. I don’t get what is going on and the potential results are terrifying.

Oh dear. The poor children...
