Hey new people, do you want help with using Mastodon? Feel free to ask by replying, or message me if you prefer. 🙂 Any question is fine, there is no such thing as a stupid question!

There is also lots of help for beginners on the website at https://fedi.tips (especially in the "Quick Start" section at the top).

If you're just wondering what the heck is going on here and want someone to explain Mastodon briefly and simply, watch this video: https://tilvids.com/w/f747058d-3991-4046-a1c9-29c184daa0ff

Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@FediTips anyone knows an android client for Mastodon that has indented threads and collapse thread on click?

@wraptile

Hmm... not sure about that one. I'll boost it and see what others say.

@FediTips @wraptile I’m commenting to remember this thread. In my opinion the weakest part of most mastodon clients is how they handle threads.

My favorite so for is @elk but it doesn’t collapse them like you suggest.

@dan

Hey by the way, there is a reminder bot on the Fediverse you can use to be reminded of threads:

Is there a reminder bot for Mastodon and the Fediverse? | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

@FediTips @dan
Well this reminds bot is great, but I don't know the better way to use it to remember a thread.
Example, I would like to be reminded of this thread on "thread support on Android client".
What I did is copy the URL (on Tusky it is on the three dots in the toot footer, but on other clients it is on right in the upper bar) and sent a private toot to the remind bot like this:

@remindme dm 1 day
Threads in Mastodon:

It works, but not as simple as a reply.

@[email protected] anyone knows an android client for Mastodon that has indented threads and collapse thread on click?

Fosstodon

@marczz

Could you do a direct reply to the thread itself, but with DM visibility and all mentions of people in the thread removed from your reply?

@FediTips
It works, but remind me is quite picky on the tile syntax 1 hour dm work but 1 minute dm does not work. The confirmation is sent in PST time zone, if it cannot use local time of the sender, it should send in UTC.
But the bad thing that I don't understand is that the bot messages don't appear in my timeline but are only threaded to my request, which completely defeat the use as a reminder. If somebody could explain that it will be useful.
@wraptile
@apps has indented threads, but no click to collapse as far as I see.
@FediTips

@wraptile

If I'm understanding you correctly, @trunksapp does this.

@FediTips

@ratcatcher Yup. Using it now. And it's made in Flutter so, buttery smooth.

@wraptile
I'm a big fan of Tusky, but it does not handle threads this way. I wonder if we could make that happen with some git hub requests or something? Cause that is a great feature to have

If you're comfortable using Github, you can post an issue at https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/issues

I had a quick look and there didn't seem to be any existing issue for this?

@FediTips @4bz actually wanted to try onboard on android dev. Maybe it's a good first issue
@wraptile @FediTips @rodentapp has indented threads and tap-hold to collapse

@frankie_flowers Indeed! I just tried it (super easy install and login on my de-googled Android) and I really like the collapsible thread feature!
It also shows me my lists in tabs which is really great!
I'm going to keep using it for now, thanks for the rec!

@wraptile @FediTips @rodentapp

@elduvelle @wraptile @FediTips @rodentapp I actually also liked it a lot when I tried it, but the missing feature to interact (follow/unfollow) hashtags was a Showstopper for me and I moved back to tusky.
@frankie_flowers
Hmm, looks like you can follow hashtags in Rodent App! Here's an example (from the search bar though, I didn't see an option when selecting a hashtag directly from a post)
@elduvelle oh nice, it wasn't possible then as I discussed it with the developer and it's not working when just clicking on a hashtag. Glad to see they added functionality for it!
@elduvelle @wraptile @FediTips Ok, not meaning to keep on bashing @rodentapp but after our discussion I went back to it to maybe switch because it really seemed nice, but soon found out that the real reason to not switch at the time was the inability to filter hashtags in the timeline. Maybe helpful for someone seeing this thread. Otherwise great app!
@frankie_flowers You mean like a switch that hides all posts from hashtags in your timeline?
@rodentapp hi! I meant switching from my current app to your app. 😉 The functionality I'm missing is that hashtags which I individually mute are filtered from my Feed.
@wraptile @FediTips This + the ability to unfold the cw on every post in a thread

@drgroftehauge @wraptile

If you're using Mastodon's web interface you can toggle every CW in a thread open or closed by clicking the 👁️ eye icon. Third party interfaces often have some similar button.

@wraptile
Take a look at @trunksapp. I think it does what you want.
@wraptile not sure if it's what you're looking for but I think @trunksapp could be the one. 🤔
@wraptile @FediTips
Here you go - @trunksapp
Its actual shame how hard it is to follow conversation on majority of mastodon apps due to a strange way of threading they adapted from official app
