Thinking of goals, and I always want to learn more. Perhaps a fun way to make it stick would be to bundle that with the goal of one TMYK toot per day. Might be a fun habit to form?

So here’s #TMYK 1/365.

Apparently a graveyard and cemetery are not the same thing. Graveyards are more associated with a particular church, whereas cemeteries tend to be larger and more likely to be independent of a particular church.

Thanks @Jillianmarisa for this fact. Which she says she already shared with me (and I apparently forgot) Checks out! 😅

#TMYK365

Today's #TMYK (2/365) comes from one of this morning's NPR newscasts.

Burgle as in burglar can apparently stand on its own. I guess that makes sense. But until today I'd never heard burgle used. The example was something like "so and so had burgled a mansion."

Hey, @grammargirl feeling like this language silliness is up your alley?

Don't burgle me, bro!

#TMYK365

Today’s #TMYK (3/365) is also a #PSA: The guidelines for visiting the Trinity test site (location of the first nuclear weapon detonation) have been revised.

Visitors are now permitted only one day per year (used to be two) and the Alamogordo Caravan has been indefinitely canceled. 😭

There is good news, though. Signups are no longer required and it doesn’t seem there’s a cap on attendance.

I know where I plan to be on October 18!

Today’s #TMYK (4/365) is a #BirdFact.

The American Redstart is in the European Expansion of #Wingspan. But it is native to the Americas. Weird.

While confirming that, @Jillianmarisa found the range map and for some reason, it doesn’t like Kentucky?!? Odd island. Anyway there’s your weak fact for the day. No redstarts for youuuu, KY

Today’s #TMYK (5/365) is learning the name for a thing that I knew existed and could describe, but didn’t know the phrase for.

“Galloping lines” are when ice builds up on wires making them more susceptible to wind. That’s the top concern for our electric utility today as we work through our winter weather which apparently now includes a blizzard. #TMYK365

Tonight’s #TMYK (6/365) is so cool!

I just learned on the TNC webinar about the 1903 Missouri River flood. The largest flood for our state in recorded history.

One outcome was that pecan seeds were deposited along the floodplain. There is a farm in Brunswick, Missouri still harvesting the nuts from some of those trees.

BONUS: Brunswick, MO is home to the world’s largest pecan. You can visit it. 🤩

Yesterday’s #TMYK (oops!) 7/365 is one I vaguely referenced in a toot yesterday, but didn’t tag or thread w/ findings.

What a day it was! 😅

The metal shoe size measuring thingy? It’s called a Brannock device. Invented by Charles F Brannock, first patented in 1925.

Today's #TMYK 8/365:

Today I learned about a provision in the MASSIVE farm bill that will pay land owners, farmers, and ranchers to place their property in a conservation easement. They still own and farm/ranch the property, but development is off the table.

More of this, please!

It is theorized that some moons can have their own moons. They are called subsatellites, or moonmoons. I greatly prefer moonmoon.

It’s likely that while dinosaurs roamed the earth, there were still volcanos erupting on the moon. 🤯

New research suggests the moon had active volcanoes when dinosaurs roamed Earth

New research suggests that volcanoes were still erupting on the moon when dinosaurs roamed Earth. Researchers based their conclusion on an analysis of tiny glass beads brought back from the moon by a Chinese spacecraft. They reported Thursday that moon volcanoes may have persisted until about 120 million years ago, spilling fresh molten lava that cooled to form the lunar surface. That is much more recent than previously thought. An outside scientist says more research is needed to confirm the origin of the beads and the time line.

#TMYK 12/365:

Astronaut is a compound derivative of two Ancient Greek words “Astro,” meaning “star,” and “naut” meaning “sailor.”

So astronaut literally means “star sailor.”

Cool!

#TMYK #TMYK365 #TIL

I’m way behind on TMYKs 😭

Today is a simple one. USDA Organic means a lot of things. One that I maybe knew in the back of my mind but didn’t consider until today is that it also means no artificial colors.

Bonus TMYK: Red 3 was recently banned. Of course our European friends must be laughing because they are all banned there.

#TMYK #TMYK #TMYK365 #TIL

Fascinating!

Today I learned that a pizza with toppings will weigh less than an equivalent cheese pizza. Apparently it is an industry standard to pull back on the amount of cheese when toppings are added. 🤯

I would have assumed that a cheese pizza was the base model or a starting point.

Today I learned all about Cara Cara Oranges. From what I gather, they are winter season oranges and folks really like them. I guess I never really bothered to differentiate between orange varieties until today. Except mandarin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cara_cara_navel #TMYK #TIL #TMYK365

Yesterday I learned that Snoopy isn’t part of the evil mouse empire. And that makes me very happy. Apple TV has licensed the rights to Snoopy TV/movies… For now. But the brand itself has multiple owners, with 20% owned by the Schultz family.

Today’s TIL is a doozie.

Apparently there are crocodiles native to the U.S. A formerly endangered species of crocs which coexist with alligators in Florida have been downgraded to threatened thanks in part to a nuclear power plant. 🤯

Check it out.

@User47 Cara Caras are SO delicious! They’re incredible juiced too
@aronow I bought a bag at Costco, yum! Our 1-year old digs them too. Little nugget can eat a whole orange! 😳 I am worried about them being clones though. Just asking for trouble w/ pests/disease
@User47 the important question is what episode are youwatching of TNG?
@vmstan the one where the actor who would later play Neelix is a Fergi and he and another ferengi abduct Riker, Troi, and her mom. Not my fave. But it has been long enough that I don’t remember most of these episodes. Or very vaguely details.
@User47
"Extra cheese" is often a topping option.
That's how we order ours.
@xris now I have to wonder if extra cheese really means extra cheese 😅
@User47 Yeah it is surprising! I just learned this recently. I noticed that the cheese pizza at Costco had more calories than the pepperoni pizza.
@User47 Marketing hype. So far not one crewed spacecraft has deployed a solar sail yet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_sail

@AstroHawk Star Trek promised me these, so I’m hopeful
@User47 For now you'll have to put up with small experiments that prove it can work. Two on-orbit experiments were by the Planetary Society, which has a Star Trek actor among its board of directors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LightSail

@User47 @Jillianmarisa

This is incorrect. The American Redstart card is in the original base game which is based around turtle island birds.

The only redstart in the European Expansion is the Black Redstart

@culi @Jillianmarisa you are right. I mistook the marking in the upper right for the swift start as the European marker
@User47 @grammargirl 'angle' can be used on its own as well.
