Over the years, I have scoured the internet for various versions of the Mac HIG PDFs. Here is my collection so far.

Some neat ones include HIGs for Mac OS 8 & a preliminary Mac OS X version from the Public Beta.

These HIGs contain general desktop guidelines that still apply today & that you can't find in the modern HIG.

Please retoot! Everyone should read these.

@marioguzman you could torrent them so they don’t get lost easily
@marioguzman Nice one! I'm sure that you already know but worth mentioning that Tog on Interface is a nice companion to the early guides https://archive.org/details/togoninterface0000togn/page/n7/mode/2up
@glotcha @marioguzman @aardvark I wish I could find the VHS tape of Bruce Tognazzini’s macaroni and cheese talk. He opened the top of the box and then looked for the directions. They were on the box bottom so he dumped the contents on the floor to read them.

@jimluther @glotcha @marioguzman @aardvark There was a German Mac magazine called MacUp that described that talk. I probably still have it in a box in storage.

If you're curious I can scan it next time I take something out of storage.

@marioguzman This is a great collection! You had a bunch I hadn't found yet. I’ve got several more you might like here: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/09banHMEUBH_B3azmvvpwiqyw#Apple_HIG_Library

@bpd neat, I’ll check it out shortly! Thank you’d Brendan!
@marioguzman @bpd I took the liberty of merging both your sets with mine, and found a bunch more including NeXTSTEP from 1993, so currently 31 documents: https://github.com/gingerbeardman/apple-human-interface-guidelines

@0x10f if they're are any I'm missing in my GitHub, please file a PR if you'd be so kind. Thanks!
@marioguzman Perhaps these would be best uploaded to the internet archive?
@marioguzman cheers Mario! Have you considered uploading these to the Internet Archive? https://help.archive.org/help/uploading-a-basic-guide/
(Also, people without an Apple account can't see the contents of your iCloud shared folder)

@marioguzman @decryption not sure if anyone has these on the IA but you should do it.
@marioguzman surprised no one has suggested to make a new public GitHub repo and commit the files there. Something like https://github.com/<your-account>/machig

@kevinbhayes @marioguzman I mailed Mario my paper copy of the 1987 edition earlier this year. The electronic version would be a nice addition to his file collection.

@marioguzman that iCloud folder throws errors for me about too many users or Folder Unavailable.

To your knowledge, is it still being shared?

@owlboy yes it should be. I have no reason to have stop sharing it. Try the Dropbox link.

@marioguzman ok, will do. Just letting you know it appears to be failing to work because of too much activity then. At least when I try to look at it on iOS.

Thanks!

@marioguzman

Have you run across a PDF of the old “HyperCard Stack Design Guidelines” book? It's seemingly super rare.

@wenge @marioguzman

used copies are out there, but like most uncommon used books, they are obscenely expensive

@wenge @marioguzman

It looks like Better World sent three copies to the IA but who knows now if they will ever be scanned

@bitsavers @marioguzman

Well that's something, at least. I know I had a copy but whether I lent it out or it's stuck in a box, I've not seen it in a ages.

@marioguzman
The people at Apple should read the old ones again as well!
@marioguzman Hello! I worked on the Mac HIG early 1990s. I actually have some of the "Human Interface Notes" that went out a 'deltas' to the HIG. I only have a paper version of them. Would you be interested in a scanned version of those?
@scottjenson oh my god YES 🙏🏼
@marioguzman Sure, I'm visiting family right now but will get to this in about 5 days
@scottjenson this whole exchange warms my nerdy heart
@scottjenson @marioguzman oh gosh. Please share for all to see!
@marioguzman & Apple violates more & more of them with every major MacOS release.
it makes me sad... :-(
@marioguzman @tapforms Thank you so much for posting these! I have been looking for the HIGs from the 90s off and on for a long while!
@marioguzman thank you! I worked on the early OS X versions but no longer have copies. Glad to have these.
