Minithread, elicited by the *possible* (no verification yet, and #Trump is full of endless shit) dumping of #Russia by #MAGA (if you missed it, there are rumors Trump told #Europe he is continuing support to #Ukraine):

This is the beginning of the end of Russia as we know it, and the beginning of the end for #Putin

#UkraineWar

So let's recap:

In February 2022, #VDV forces landed at #Hostomel airport to pave the way for #Russia's quick decapitation of #Kyiv.

Apparently some of the #Russian #Paratroopers made restaurant reservations in Kyiv (as their joke), such was their certainty.

And, nobody thought #Russia would be this stupid, but if they did it, the world also thought #Ukraine would rapidly crumble.

How could they not? Russia was a major power and Ukraine was poor and puny.

Instead the world got a remarkable demonstration of a people grimly united in dread purpose: not only the preservation of their country, but their lives, such is #Russia's #genocidal #mafia ways.

They rose to the occasion in virtually cinematic terms.

#Zelensky, a #television #comedian, became a #heroic #statesman. The #Ukrainian people used their grit, resolve, and spirit to jerry rig a #resistance that made "mighty" Russia look like a joke. The "great statesman" #Putin became the comedian.

Fast forward to today:

#Georgia is boiling over with #protest and stubborn #political #resistance to the #corruption of their country by #Russia.

Another #Euromaidan brewing, Mr. #Putin?

#Armenia is firmly outside of #Russia's orbit, having been abandoned in its struggle with #Azerbaijan as hampered #Russia could not secure the #peace. Now Armenia works with #Greece, #France, etc.
And no one, least of all #Russia, escapes realizing the ramifications of one of their most important, longest, and vital #clientstates: #Syria, slipping away, as a distracted Russia could do nothing as #Rebels backed by #Turkey swept the country and #Assad crumbled. The #cruel #regime is over, the #Syrian people now with the potential for #hope in their long devastated land.
Yeah, start sweating you turd.

The #Russian #economy is in trouble. The #Ruble drops, #interestrates are sky high, #inflation: you can't kill or maim hundreds of thousands of your men on folly while directing a huge part of your economy to #shells and #tanks and put that on the national credit card, without serious long term ramifications.

Even if you take all of #Ukraine tomorrow. You're looking at years or even decades of pain.

When you look at where the Ruble was in mid 2022… it has fallen quite a bit:

https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=RUB&to=USD&view=5Y

Dec 24, 2019, 00:00 UTC - Dec 21, 2024, 06:09 UTC

RUB/USD:
close: 0.00971543 2024-12-21
low: 0.00736328 2022-03-10
high: 0.0190599 2022-06-30

It's not the lowest it's been, but at present, its value is about half that of the peak it had in 2022.

Zoom out to 10 years, and a line-of-best-fit shows a steady decline since 2015.

I understand Vladimir is not a well man, and I think his use-by date is well and truly up. 25 years, and this is what he has to show for it. Not a great legacy.

@benroyce The story against the Euro isn't much better…

It held its own pretty well, until August this year. 2024-11-27 saw a major crash.
