🐡✨ A marine #glimmer: The white-spotted #pufferfish is nature’s greatest artist. Males work nonstop for a week, shaping large geometric circles in the sand to attract a mate.

By flapping their fins along the seafloor, they build intricate ridges, decorate them with #shells and #coral and sculpt a detailed maze-like pattern in the center. If a female is impressed by his craftsmanship, she may choose to lay her eggs there.

A slight departure from my usual photographs, so please indulge me!

I went to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History this week and spotted a display describing how many shells follow a logarithmic spiral growth pattern. I’m a mathematician and code geek, amongst other things, so of course I went home and started writing code to model shell growth.

This image is one of the resulting virtual shells - ammonite-like shell with growth ribs and with the shell rendered transparent to show the internal structure (simulated “septa”, chamber divisions, and a simple siphuncle).

Obviously it’s not a photograph but, honestly, I think it's beautiful!

This beach is covered in rocks, barnacles, and a variety of shells left by feasting birds. The crunch as you walk is unpleasant.
