A bicycling story in 4 parts #broken #axle #BikeTooter
Question for the wrenching bicycle folks: so, what next on this? New hub? Replace the broken part of the hub? New wheel entirely? #BikeTooter #repair cc @ascentale @ericm @jfreebo @HayiWena (and all the much more experienced bike folk out there?)
Okay, hauled the entire wheel down to the LBS. They did not have the right axle, but they did have a solid axle that will fit. They did not have the right tool to remove the hub, except behind the bench, but could not remove the hub because no axle to clamp onto, LOL. They apparently refuse to fix axles there, but since they now know me went fishing for an axle that would fit. #BikeTooter #bikerepair #carryshitolynpics
Old broken axle. New solid axle but it's a bit long. Got new bearings since I'm in here. Getting the bearings in without removing the freewheel will be... interesting. #BikeRepair
Not that anyone REALLY cares, but Suntour axles of this era require M10x1.0mm nuts, which are not easy to find... except for some reason, at Home Depot (tomorrow's task). They are $7 for 2 at bicycle stores, $2.50 each from McMaster-Carr or 20 for $12, $$$ from eBay, but $1.25 each at Home Depot, if they have them. So off to Home Depot I go, after I repack the bearings (when I have light to work outside). All the parts were soaked in degreaser for a few hours to remove how many ever decades of hardened grease. (scavenging a used wheel would be cheaper, yes -- standard 26 inch MTB wheel - Suntour 7x3, would need to match the 7 speed). #bikerepair #suntour #vintage

(Note: it clearly makes more financial sense to buy one of the used mountain bikes that shows up here weekly INSTEAD of fixing this... but since my purpose here is learning how to fix a broken axe, I'm paying for the lesson, not for the practicality of this.

If I were smart, I'd have purchased the $35 Nishiki that a neighbor was selling, or this $50 Stumpjumper with Deore DX components as a replacement, instead of spending half of that on ancient Suntour axle parts, LOL)

@ai6yr I am salivating at all these incredible bikes deals there.
@ai6yr
Massachusetts based boltdepot is a good place to get any size you need.
Locally O'Reilly might have what you need. Idon't know whether you need stainless. What height nut.

@ai6yr
The grease and the oil seals will retain the balls.

You will want to replace the oil seals, the one you showed up-thread looks a bit stuffed.

@ai6yr 😮I have never broken a bike axle. I have done hubs and bottom brackets though. 😄 Grease is your friend.
